340NM of torque at 1750rpms

6.1litres/100km (15+km/litre, tested to do 20km/litre).

Faster and more efficient than the 525.

I think its about time Singapore relaxed diesel taxes for sedan cars. The new generation of clean, efficient and economical diesels are really too good to ignore!

BMW is making a stand and joining the competition in the diesel world by making a luxury 520d turbo-diesel sedan, which is set to arrive in November of this year. The 520d will be using the high-torque, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that boasts powerful and spirited performance along with ultra-low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

With its second-generation common rail fuel injection and variable-geometry turbocharger, the 520d engine produces 125 kW at a relaxed 4,000 rpm, as well as a surging 340 Nm of torque that is available from as low as 1,750 rpm to provide impressive pulling power. Equipped as standard with BMW’s six-speed automatic transmission and capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, the new 520d is endowed with the sporting all-round performance that is central to the BMW philosophy.

Yet, with a fuel consumption of merely 6.1 litres/100 km on the combined cycle, the 520d offers small-car fuel consumption. This frugality is augmented by low exhaust emissions, with the CO2 output of just 162 g/km made possible with the combination of advanced BMW engine management and the standard exhaust system particle filter.

The new BMW 520d Automatic is priced from $79,900 and makes the brilliant 5 Series accessible to an even wider range of Australian luxury car buyers. Exceptional dynamic prowess coupled with supreme passenger comfort and the highest levels of safety are already a given with the recently updated BMW 5 Series range. Now, the driving dynamics of 530i, 530d and 550i models can be augmented by the optional six-speed Sport automatic transmission that takes the crisp-shifting nature of the regular transmission to new levels.

The Sport automatic transmission option is available for 530i, 530d and 550i models and is priced at $1,000. The option also includes a multi-function sport leather steering wheel, featuring paddle shifts.

I think it's stigmatic. Diesel and BMW seems to be a weird combination.

Just like once Turbo BMWs are unthinkable as they are well known for the best NA engines in the world?

Now there are turbo-ed M cars already, soon the M3 and M5 will be turbocharged.

but even if laws are relaxed,

PML wont bring them in cheaply and slap themselves.

In fact no AD would.

who knows, maybe PI?

just like your 520d example, with a twin turbo diesel in line six engine giving 427nm torque and 286 bhp for the 635d, no one will bother with a petrol driven 630i or a 650i anymore if the price is cheaper or even about the same.

If there is demand, there will be supply. The car industry is more customer orientated than the bike industry, where we're at the mercy of the importers.

Then again, 5-series with better fuel consumption than a Corolla Altise... Its gonna be a real oxymoron!

Maybe, maybe not. I been watching the Honda Hybrid 1.3, fuel consumption of a 1.3ltr versus a 1.8 Honda civic non-hybrid, the hybrid sales still not spectacular, just becos the agent/mfr price it 10k more for the technology. For 10k more, most car buyers would have sold off their car by 3-5 year already, so the savings doesnt add up for green owners.

I see the diesel BMW going green will also face similar problem if the agent does it like Kah Motors. Maybe they bring in if becos of pressure from mfr wanting them to put more variety in their line-up, depends on their agency contract agreement, how much say the mfr has over agent.

Half the new cars sold in Europe are diesels. The fact that diesel fuel is much more renewable compared to petrol, we just one day see the demise of Petrol engined cars, leaving all the remaining petrol for motorcycles!

Sg is too small to consider that on a bigger scale. As a biker, i dislike the smell of diesel exhaust.

Singapore has always been a rebel towards accepting diesel as a form of passenger car fuel. VW had a hard time convincing the LTA that their new TDI has emissions that pass all the regulations set in Europe. Also, the diesel taxes don't seem to favour passenger car prices.

Yes, turbo diesels are great. I had a very hard time trying to catch up a 330D on the Deutsche Autobahn. And diesel is highly sought after in European passenger car owners. It will be some time for our government to start accepting diesel as a main line of passenger car fuel. On the contrary, I believe that CNG or even hydrogen cells (if costs can be lowered) may even over take diesel as our next primary fuel source.

Maybe becos Sg wants to support its oil refinery biz, petrol attracts higher tax vs diesel. Just leave diesel to commercial vehicles for biz sustainability. Whatever the reasons, i'm sure $$$ has got something to do with it, not consumers' interests.

even in South Africa, diesel cars outsell petrol cars although diesel costs more than petrol.

The bunch of bureaucrats at LTA and the ministry probably still think diesel cars are inefficient and smoky.
