Sev needs to take into consideration of this 'hidden' spending such as filters, batts, CFs, portable storage, dry cabi, cam bag (when u feel the current one is too small), new lens and more lenses.

Ask yrself the questions that horizoner asked and u may follow what Lmodel has adviced.

btw Lmodel, the BBB virus will be striking at the end of every month.... heheheh.

thanks for your comments! really appreciate them.

i think most properly i will get the D70s kit from HN, too good to resist, i used to have a Canon EOS888 & i'm using Ixus 40 currently.

i'll need to check out Canon's offer then decide which to go for.

or should i go for D50 kit with 55-200mm (+$199 only, offer from courts), the amount i save from the different between D70s + some $$ i can get a SB800....

The D50 kit is a 18-55 while the D70s kit is a 18-70. Resale value for 18-55 is abt $120 while resale value for 18-70 is abt $300.

Forget abt the 55-200. You can get a new SB800 for abt $590 now.

Btw, 2nd hand D70s kit is selling for abt $1.1k now, excluding all the freebies. You can use the difference to get yourself a SB800 too.

there are many things to consider other than depreciation of dslr prices.

may i suggest you to:

1. buy a CF card first (which ever brand u buy, u still need a CF card)

2. bring CF to shops and try out nikon, canon or any other brand

3. do further comparison of the photos at home & decide

i would not suggest you to buy from HV, but other local shops that sells cam.

you can try cathay photo (Peninsular Plaza) or MS colour (AMK).

if you need help, can always PM me for my number.

i dont mind helping if my timing permits.

can you explain why not advisible to buy from HN?

they are offering 2 yrs extended warranty which is very very attractive...

there will be total 3 yrs warranty in all...

if i buy the CF first, then i will have 3 CFs in total if i take the Nikon offer.

anyone can lend me your CF so i can test all the camera? :)

nothing is wrong buying from HN, if you find the promo is attractive by all means buy from HN.

but some HN sales ppl are crap, dunno anything abt cam and simply smoke their way out. was told by one of them: cam shake can be minimised by using flash.

long story cut short, go to cam store because they can offer more accurate advise.

most of the time, you can get some decent offer from cam shops (CP or MS).

i know someone selling 350D kits new at $1350. of course minus all the freebies.

doesnt matter who and where you buy from, most important is to get the correct info prior your purchase.

wah power.... newbie here using eos 500.. all getting digital slr now ?

not really.

i'm still using a eos 50, along with my eos 300d and my bro eos 20d. coming up will be a eos 30d.

slr are still good for trans (slides) and b/w photography. if your interest is in fashion or landscape especially, film (+ve or -ve) can't be beaten. for everything else, dslr the way to go :cheeky:

i used to have a EOS 888, spend a lot $$ on film cost many test shots...

now with digital, it is a lot cheaper to try various setting, and post precessing of the photo is alot easier. :D

update;

went to MS at AMK central, quoted:

Canon 350D kit, $1340, free 1 G CF card sandisk ultra II & Canon DSLR carry bag.

Nikon N70s Kit, $1650, free 2 G cf card laxer 80x speed,lowepro bag ,dry box,123 imaging software & free filter 67mm.

pretty decent price, N70s cheaper than HN by $138. But i'm willing to pay that amount to get extra 2 yrs warranty.

tested both camera, 350D is small and light. It has a better view finder than N70s, however, it's grip is small and my 3 fingers will need to squeeze in an awkard way to hold the cam.

N70s suits my hand well, grip well and my finger feels comfortable. heavier than 350D.

I will go for N70s kit, may be we can meet up someday to have some shooting session and old bird can teach me something... :D

comparing the price of MS vs HN for N70s, it is an obvious choice to go for HN.

pay a little more and u get 3 yrs warranty with 4GB CF + more freebies.

nothing beats the excitement of looking at slides (of Medium Format) and the developing of b&w.

18-200VR is so good that u need not worry abt changing lens during travel.

but before u buy dslr, take note that the colour straight-out-of-cam is not so flattering comparing to any P&S. post processing is needed.

Yikes... 18-200VR is super expensive lens!

Last Friday, I came across a cheap-@ss Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6 for just RM300 and I bloody grabbed it just for the hell of it. Oh boy, a newbie's toy... looking forward to fool around with it.

Regarding the colour... that's true, the colours tend to look a bit muted but you can tweak it somewhat via the onboard menu.

I'm no expert tho. Still fiddling around with my D50.

any photo taken with Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6 to show us?

It has no VR and when fully zoom at 300mm, i think we need a tripod...

yours is G or D version?

I'm planning to get one of it too, not so expensive for first zoom lens.

will get my D70s kit this Saturday, went back my M'sia home town last weekend.

Photos taken from the 70-300mm is rather soft. Lens is only good for taking permanent objects (e.g. architectures, etc) as focusing is rather slow.

How abt the 70-200 f2.8 VR? hee

I took my Nikkor 70-300mm G lens out for a short spin yesterday afternoon. That's the first time I had the chance to toy around with it.

You're spot on about the focusing being slow. And noisy, too. (My D50's 18-55mm kit lens is leagues better in terms of speed and noise). Sometimes I find myself switching to manual focus and twirling the focus ring with my fingers.

Not too sure about images being soft... I need a bloody tripod before I can say that for sure... hehe...

Anyway... this Nikkor 70-300mm G lens is by far the cheapest Nikkor lens available. OK lah for beginners, plus you get a hefty telephoto capability to boot.

Soft, slow or noisy, at just RM300 a pop I really shouldn't be complaining.

I foresee that the lens will be staying inside your dry cabinet most of the time. Why not sell it off and get yourself a 3rd party 70-200 f2.8 instead? The big aperture is especially useful if you are going for events (e.g. fashion show). If not go for a used Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 which should costs around the same as a new third party lens.

Let me know if you are coming to Singapore. I shall poison you with my 70-200 f2.8 VR lens LoL

Btw, any D50 user interested in the 18 - 70 kit lens?

Posted

btw, i had a old tamron 80-200mm manual focus lens (canon mount), possible to convert to nikon mount?

can be use on DSLR if it is not a AF?

i prefer the medium format slide. way superior to digital anyday.

but then again, since i also like b/w and developing/processing my own film. my slr is still here to stay :thumb:
