i guess it will be very costly... are intend to shipped it there permanently..? if i'm not wrong you need to de-register it 1st.. its unlike going to thailand and above by train... i guess you would like to check with LTA 1st whether our bikes here can be shipped oversea...

my 2 cents...:thumb:

No, not ship permanently. Ship there for one month to ride, tour and explore the country, then ship back again. I remembered in the past someone organized such a ride to NZ? I checked out their rental rates and they are way too expensive, can probably buy a new STX with one month of rental. If I'm not wrong, shipping one way costs around $1500 or so, so it's a huge saving.

A lot of paperwork is involved. Foremost you will need a carnet - that means youll have to put down a deposit almost equivalent to cost of your bike.

Shipping is not an issue after you have a carnet. A lot of shippers would be glad to have your business. You can probably do it cheaper than 1.5k but you will need to be fluent with NZ rules and regulations regarding bike shipping. There have stringent rules regarding this - your bike will have to be super clean and will need a fumigation certificate.

Also find out what the costs on the other end - its quite expensive getting your bike uncrated, inspected and so on.

In the long run its not worth the hassle and costs if youre just going to spend a couple of weeks there. You will be better off looking at NZ classifieds and buying a second hand bike.

I think it is just awesome ... i rode in Australia Great Ocean Drive .. it was spectacular you can go on and on

NSR 125 (Hornet) (1995-1996)

LC 125 (1996-1997)

Super 4 Version 'S' (1997-2000)

NTV Deauville 650 (2000-2004)

FJR 1300 (2004-2006)

Pulsar 200 (2009 - Present)

Its definitely not the destination, it's the journey .....

Not sure what tupac did - but Oz is as anal as NZ when it comes to shipping.

I rode the Great Ocean Road a long time ago - if Im not wrong it was on the eve of the Iraq war. I rented a bike from here

It was a Kawasaki ER500. It was priced reasonably at $45 per day, and probably the cheapest rental I had in Oz or NZ.

Some people actually buy a bike there and sell it after their month long trip. If you are lucky can even break even or make a profit. My friend bought and sold a car after driving both islands and he incurred little expenses.

Buying was my original suggestion. Just bear in mind that bikes are expensive to buy. And you can never be sure of the condition. Not to mention the paperwork involved. It would be good if you had somebody on the ground that can do the initial legwork for you.

Another suggestion I can think of if you could get a couple of guys who would like to tour either NZ or Oz to share a bike. You can split the cost and the guys can take turns on the bike - one could drive south island and into north island and leave it there for second guy for the trip down. The same would be possible in Oz - ride across and leave it for the next guy. However that would mean finding shops/people to leave the bike with. It might be difficult but not impossible.

Thanks for the suggestions. However, on buying bikes, how easy is it to do that? And what about not being able to sell when you need to leave the island? That's a huge risk isn't it?
