Funny thing about spark plugs..

NGK (apprantly there is 2 type of NGK) the one that is made in MY and another made in Japan... the bike manual suggest 'CR8EH-9' , yet when im in KL and got sparkplug NGK (CR8E) it also works...(infact lasted for 5 months..)....

so the real question.. is the price .. which is cheaper ?? cos if we can use the cheaper NGK-CR8E(made in MY), then why pay more for the 'recommended in the manual' type...

Also... since i was not able to get new sparkplug (due to price is expensive), i decided to do an old trick that i hear old-school bikers do (on their 2 stroke bikes).. take out the plug, 'sand paper' the tip.. till shiny... then put it back... suprizingly... pickup and 2nd gear transition.. is better.... maybe this is a good temperory alternative... so i guess its good to keep 'sand paper' in the tool kit.. just in case...

;)

What do NGK part numbers signify?

A. Part number represent.

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/plug_illustrated.jpg

What is the function of a spark plug?

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/what_is.jpg

# it operates under extreme conditions.

# It withstands repeated cycles between normal temperature and 2,000 ~ 2,500 degrees celcius.

# It withstands high voltages of 20,000 - 30,000 V.

# It withstands pressures of 50 kg/per cm squared.

# It withstands chemical corrosion caused by gasoline and combustion gases.

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/plug_cross_section.jpg

Q11. What is a racing spark plug?

A. It is a high performance spark plug for high power engines with increaced compression ratio and higher rpm.

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/11_green_field.jpg

Q14. What is spark plug fouling?

A. It is a phenomenon by which carbon attached to the firing end causes electrical leakage that leads to mis-firing.

As the high voltage generated by the ignition coil leaks away through the carbon, mis-firing may occur and cause running and starting difficulties.

Fouling mis-fire

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/voltage_leak.jpg

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/fouling.jpg

As carbon builds up, the insulation resistance of the spark plug drops and the voltage generated by the ignition coil is reduced. When the generated voltage becomes lower than the required voltage of a spark plug (the voltage needed to cause sparks at the spark gap), sparking is suppressed and mis-firing occurs.

Q15. What is spark plug overheating?

A. Prolonged overheating may induce abnormal combustion (pre-ignition), resulting in melting of the spark plug electrodes.

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/overheating.jpg

Overheated spark plugs have a white insulator surface at the firing end speckled deposits. Electrode melting represents excessive overheating. When the spark plug temperature exceeds 870 degrees celcius, the firing end serves as a heat source before sparking and induces abnormal combustion (pre-ignition), possibily damaging the piston.

http://www.ngkspark.com.au/images/piston.gif

Q19. How long will a spark plug last?

A. Even when a spark plug is correctly used, periodic replacement is required as it is a consumable item.

Examples of problems caused by excessively long periods of use

* Worn-out electrodes will have difficulty in sparking.

* Deposits accumulated on the firing end may induce abnormal combustion

(pre-ignition), causing problems that include melting of the electrodes.

Very disappointing... actually wanted to change to the iridium ones ubt budget leh..... :sian:

Bro,

About this not smooth ride, do you think it is caused by the petrol that we pumped in?

I experienced this same thing 'loss of power' on and off after I top-up at GP................

Cheers

Spark Plug...eeemmmm.....still got no definate answer to this problem...but here are some issues to ponder on.....

1. How can we know that d plug we buy is not d REJECTED ones..?

2. A spark plug fires just as much as d engine revolution (RPM)..idling speed 1.5..

which is 1500 revolution per minute...so if suay to get the reject one than...too

bad lah.

3. When intial moving off even after warm up..DO NOT ACCELERATE SO FAST as if

u are in a race track...sudden input of electrical power will send the spark plug

some sort of heart attack..move off slowly & increase speed slowly...

4. If u notice a KTM rider always blast its bike when its time to move off...its has

something to do with the spark plug also...if u dont BLast the bike ur plug will

blow..that applies to racing bikes configuration...but not our bike....i used

to use 6 spark plug ONE day when riding KTM..coz i dont BLAST d bike...but my

friend did...so he survive for a month or more...

5. Recently a mechanic drop my spark plug...before fixing..then when he fix it on

my bike...it lasted for a week only..thenn same same lah...like camel...

All of the above story is from real life experience...not to brag about it but just something for everyone to look into coz it happens to some of our fello bikerrsss..

I believe its the spark plugs ah. When i changed the spark plugs, I was using SG petrol. 1 week later i was using JB's. Both are the same

Must be a "Spark Plug Flu" season.....

Pro Dero Iridium was the ones I used to Cherating. Now I use normal ones ah. lots of difference man

Talking bout Cherating, me n Soffian are talking about a sequel trip to Cherating, hehehe....

To all who has this loss of power/camel-like feeling when riding, i experienced the same thing for the whole of last week. Earlier this week i took out my spark plugs n scraped the black thingy(carbon) off my plugs n the power, (if there was any to begin with) was back n the camel slaughtered. Changed back to the stock plugs on wednesday n tested them on the way back from Tuas yesterday. 120 through the whole stretch of AYE/KJE/BKE.:lovestruck: :lovestruck: :lovestruck:

At times i did touch 125 but i guess they were on downslopes.

I just had my full-servicing about 2 weeks ago. Spark-plugs changed as usual and my bike was very smooth until after I top-up at GP. Thats why for my case I really think its the fuel-lah. I will monitor after the next top-up this time in SG and see what happen.

possible reason for camel effect:

1. over flow of fuel in da jet wind floaters dat stablise fuel intake dat time ah wah showed me...

2. foul plugs due to carbon build up or its firing too much spark givin u da giddy ride :cheeky:

3. valve clearance not smooth.....alot of things to theorically but u gotta let a pro strip it n show u all man...hehehe!

now bike got da pick up clearance after 4000rpm below dat its like chokin at da carb...cuz botax haven throughly examine but he can tell u ah wah use alot of sports bike stuff on my bike which is not necessary better get a v-strom & whack da da throttle den tak waste time liao...hahaha!
