I guess now might be a good time to mention some old stories.

There was this fella called Blur. He has not gotten his licence yet but he wanted this really cool spiffy sports bike. So he surfed SBF and got to know this seller Mean.

He bought over that bike on full cash. Lay it out at the bike shop.

The ex owner Mean then tells him to how about put it at his old block parking lot so he can often take care of the bike, no need pay storage blah blah blah. New Owner Blur believed him as a friend, and so let the Ex Owner "towed" the bike to the Ex Owner's parking lot.

Some time later. Blur keep receiving summons but ignored it, thinking it was mistakes, because Mean keep telling him so. Until Officers came up to his house and demand for investigations. Thats when....

Blur found out, that Mean has been riding that Motorcycle thru gantries and there was even pictures of other people besides Mean, that rode the bike thru gantries.

Mean had threatened Blur to admit that the bike was knowingly, loan to Mean (Or he will never see the bike again, and Mean intend to make sure BLur goes to jail with him with lying.)

So Blur complied, and was making that statement to the LTA Investigations Officer. Anyway, Blur finally wised up and seeked advise on SBF regards to his problem, but because statement was already made. Blur cannot escape. Blur was charged, banned from taking licences, and Mean dunno got go to jail or not. The bike was never recovered and neither was the other guys riding Blur's lay off bike was identified.

Hi all, I am currently taking my 2B, TP on 9th march. Just gonna wonder if I am financially able to support the transport myself from other parties view.

1) 19 ( going 20 this year )

2) Debts: HP bill, Any CC bills mostly on food, Internet bill, transport fee(max: $500, minimum: $170~)

3) Student (graduating soon, looking for a temporary FT job while waiting for SPF to contact me for MTE term )

4) Bt Batok

5) Sch location: Ngee ann poly, Work location: currently working at retail ( Orchard )

6) Height: 171cm, Weight 65-67kg

7) Purpose of buying: Transport, occasional some fun ride

8) Future aspirations, yes to go for PT degree courses ( thus the purpose of taking 2B), gonna upgrade till class 2

I personally prefer motard bikes but they are expensive. But saw 1 dr200 motard selling $1.4k coe end jan/2013. So tempting to buy, but right now holding my horses

Hope any advices to come in! :)

Hello, bills average $335. (Take the max + min /2) and graduating soon.

Because based on your current situation, assuming $0 savings and pt income of 1k, no, its not recommended because

A) You have 2 job transitions (1 quit your retail @ orchard to go temp FT, 2 quit your temp FT to go SPF) possibly in one year, meaning your income will be affected twice.

B) At your age + license + bike, insurance is I guess 1.5 and upwards? Not to mention motards and old motards, require more maintenance and fc is generally not appealing.

C) The bike you are looking at is 8 years old. Next year after you pass your 2A, you will be selling (If you are) at a great loss, considering left 1 year, and motards are a niche market. Even if you don't sell COE is hovering around 1.8k so meaning to keep it running, you have to fork out that amount, but thats a problem years later.

D) You're planning to go for PT degree, public unis will set you back $24k in total? there abouts? And private $30-36k? Poly fresh grad for female = 1.8- 2k, meaning yearly your income only at best $24k basic, - 20% CPF = $19,200 = $1.6/mth. Your bills alone not including bike, is $335. you left 1265. Your living expenses plus save money for degree and clearing your poly fees + laptop loan if you took... Very risky. Somemore you're going to upgrade till class 2

But of course all these are hypoethical, if you could provide more info, that would be very helpful.

Do you have savings?

How much currently do you earn?

Do you have to serve NS? (Sorry not familiar with SPF or the meaning for MTE)

How long do you plan to keep this bike?

What causes such a big deficit in your expenses? 170 - 500 is almost a 300% incremental. How often does this happen?

Any debts? I'm assuming poly + laptop currently?

I have read all the posts. but i m not too sure if i m able to afford the bike anot.

I seek your advise. Thank you.

I m thinking if i spend my saving on Downpayment(1.5K)

i will only be left with 500 with my pay of 800+.

will take be enough for second year insurance? cause first year already 1.8k second year how much?

with your budget, it would be quite okay if you're not really into sports bikes like SP etc.

you can source it from here de used bike sale section, quite a good option to find good 2nd hand bikes! =)

assuming you don't have other expensive expenses like drinking, gambling or what. no debts or bills to pay. i think you can afford the bike already.

but your insurance is 1.8k? its too expensive, got try asking other insurance company? you taking third party only right?

if you can wait a few more months, i would advise you to do it. since u earning 800+ monthly. you wait 3-4 months, you can easily save up 1-2k more for your bike

Hey there pal,

Savings wise, I do not have ( I had savings, just that I paid my bills monthly and at times, i don't work due to exams )

I am currently earning $300-400 for student study period, if holidays will be earning $800+/-

Yes I do have to serve NS, I am waiting for spore police force to offer me contract to sign on with them for 5 years ( that's the MTE - Minimum Term Engagement for pre-enlistees to sign a bond of 5 years which inclusive of the 2 year NS inside already )

Currently I have thoughts of keeping the bike till I get my class 2 license but things sure changed as I read from other users, once passed 2A, sure upgrade bike due to all kinds of factors e.g peer influence, craving for better performance or speed etc

The expenses increment is due to credit card bills - such as food ( i do eat alot ) and supplements ( once every 2 months ). This happen lets say... once every 3-4months?

Debts? Yes, a $5k debt ( not illegal things ah lol), a loan I took from my lecturer and she said can slowly repay her time by time, no rush ( after ns, also can or when i have a stable income )

Hello,

Okay, frankly, I am not of the opinion that you should get your bike. Because, primarily, your coming year still a bit unpredictable. I'm not sure of pre police ns training, whether they allow you to ride bike into PA, so, if they do, well okay, but if they don't your bike will be seating there usable only on weekends, at least for the first 3 months.

Secondly, you're looking to buy an old bike, meaning, again unless the owner took pristine care of the bike, it might give you some problems, and I don't think you would like to spend your booked out days at a mechanic waiting for them to patch up your bike.

Thirdly, your life style is rather high maintenance, supplements + many meals (neither come cheap) and hence, will also dent your income.

NS pay for regular assuming you are signing on as poly grad is 1958 ( From spf website). But first 3 months you are cadet, meaning your pay more likely to be 15-16? Minus CPF 20% = 12 - 13. You need to pay back poly (assuming you used cpf = $100) = 11-12. Minus your expenditure, plus living expenses, and the bike will cripple your long term.

I would also advocate that you return the loan asap, preferably in the first year even though your lecturer is nice. Your mean income for the first 12 months will already be about 12 x 3 = 36 + 15 x 9 = 135 Total = $19400. Your total debt = $6000 (Poly) + $5000 (Personal) = $11000 already.

Of course not saying you must pay off one shot, but over time, your total debt without the bike already more than 50% of your total income. Haven't included your living expenses , bike insurance, maintenance + Season parking + petrol. Plus you mention your pt degree, most schools do installments of 4k per semester, so you have to save up 4k from your average salary of 1.4-1.5 every 5-6 months.

Well of course, the plan I envision is to get debt free asap, so it might not be what you have in mind. But in any case, still would like to caution against taking more debts when you can be clearing them.

Do feel free to contest me or ask further. =)
