Hi there,

I am 28, new to this site and to Singapore. I have recently moved here and I wanted to ask you if you could help me to figure out the expenses for keeping a scooter here in Singapore. I am planning to buy the first cheap 125Cc scooter (no electric bike) I will find and I would like to know what kind of expenses I should expect (I don't know the local laws so I don't know the local taxes, insurance and all that comes along with it).

I was wondering if someone can give me a good breakdown and how can I save as much as possible (I don't swim in cash but I need 2 wheels to ride around :cheeky:).

Thank you very much.

Best

P.S. I will also need to get the local license for it so if someone can give me an overview of that process I would much appreciate it!!!

Welcome! Firstly regarding your license, you should look at 3 driving centres to get your license. CDC, BBDC or SSDC. Google them to learn more on their lesson structure and rates. I think generally people spend about 500-1000 on the license, depending how fast you learn.

As for the bike, since you only need 2 wheels for transport. I recommend you get the 125cc mopeds. A second hand one should cost about 2k plus (not too sure) and a brand new bike should be about 4k or thereabout.

Other costs you have to take note of apart from mantainence of the bike is.

Insurance, once a year - costs varies on age and bike type

Road tax - 6 months or 1 year

Inspection - 1 year - less then $25

Hope it helps! See you on the road!

adding maintainence & petrol, u need to store some spares in case of emergency.

also COE is 10years, if u get a 9yr old bike, good luck, next yr need to renew COE, so cheap doesn't mean good. old bikes tend to break down more often, so u might spend more on repairs. think long term, unless u're moving away next yr.

inspection is needed for bikes more than 3yrs old. cost $17+.

a lot of information on http://www.onemotoring.com.sg, u can check it out.

also if u have valid driving license, just go to driving center n convert, no need to go thru all the lessons again.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

COE - certificate of entity. Lasts 10 years and subsequently can be renewed by 10 years(still renewable) or for 5 years(no renewal thereafter).

What I would look out for is if your previous license obtained would be eligible for conversion to a local licensing - provided you take the local safety regulations test.
