Hiya ... holiday project .. help convert old VCDs into AVI for storage on harddisk. Anyone know of any software that can do this? Preferably freeware that can be downloaded.

Did a check online, all DVD to AVI, sigh .. I'm a dinosaur.

Cheers

If you can browse the files on the VCD via "My Computer" and reveal all the DAT files, simply rename their file extension to MPG.

For instance, avseq001.dat ----> avseq001.mpg

From there, you can start hunting for MPG to AVI programs to do the other half of the job.

Many donkey years ago I used a free program called VCDpro or something similar in name to convert VCDs into MPEGs.

When you want to convert to AVI, I presume you are actually talking about the DiVX format and not the traditional AVI.

If you really can't find any program to do the converting for you, there's a troublesome way to work around... convert the VCD to MPEG and use Microsoft Media Encoder to encode into the DiVX format using the encoder. Take note you need to have the DiVX encoder format which you can download.
