Hey guys,

There seems to be some problem with my Bajaj Pulsar 180. When I change to 5 gear, there is sound coming from the engine/chain. Its kind of a metal grinding sound, it happens only while accelerating on the 5th gear even at low speed. At same speed 4th gear I dont get that sound. Also it happens only while accelerating, if I close the throttle I dont get the sound. Any idea what the issue could be?

I intially thought it could be very tight chain and I went to nearby bike shops, they say the sprockets are worn out. But how can the sound come only in 5th gear if sprockets are worn out? I am thinking the 5th gear is worn out, what do you guys think?

Thanks,

Revhappy

I would put the bike on the center stand, and engage the gears. That way, you can observe the bike ,and try to trace where the rattling sound is coming from. For all i know, it could very well be the exhaustec tumour rattling.

You mean put the bike on center stand start the bike and then clutch in and change gears? I am thinking of even removing the front sprocket cover and then put the gear shift back and then start the bike and shift gears and see.

But the fact that the sound comes only in the fifth gear and not 4th or any gear if at the same speed or same RPM, makes me thinkg its 5th gear wear out issue, dont you think?

Please confirm your symptoms before making a diagnosis. You will be slapping your own face if it turns out the problem was coming from an area with an easy fix.

While on your main stand, engage all gears one by one, and pull up the revs for every gear. When your bike makes the sound, check where the sound is coming from. Is is coming from the lower part of the engine? Or somewhere else?

You may want to. Get a friend to keep the front end of your pulsar down.

Thanks bro. I tried doing that. But, I think its not easy to change gears while on the main stand. I put on 1st gear and reved. It reved fine and the rear tyre moves. But then 2nd gear onwards the gear lever moves but the rear tyre doesn't move anymore, inspite of revving. I will try it again.

BTW, I was clutching in all along while doing this. Should I leave the clutch. Kind of scary to do, if the rear tyres touches the ground by mistake then crash!

I took a few rounds today in my carpark, without wearing the helmet and trying to lean down and listen to the sound. Its kind of a windy sound like the chain is touching something and comes only while revving on the 5th gear, not very harsh and I have a feeling its coming more from rear side of the bike and not directly near the engine. But that could just be a feeling.. sigh!

You should release the clutch. Have a buddy hold down the bike if you are afraid the bike moves off.r

Is the sound heard under heavy engine load? Try riding in 4th gear slowly going up a slop and give the throttle a big twist. If the engine make the same sound, very likely your engine is pinging/knocking :thirsty:

Thanks Bro. I put the bike on the center stand and changed gear and revved and then could hear the sound when I put it in 5th gear. So good thing is I can reproduce this issue when I take it to a bike shop. But wasn't able to find out the cause yet.

One way to confirm that the sound is not from the chain/sprocket would be to just remove the chain cover and the front sprocket cover and since mine is o-ring chain it has a clip, so I could remove the chain entirely from the bike and then do the above testing. If sound stays then its surely an engine/gear box issue. What do you think?
