Safety:

dont be aggressive

Sometimes you got no choice especially when there is a need to overtake a 2-lane bi-directional road.

Try not to horn

Use Right Signal to overtake.

To make sure that he, if in a truck, can see your intentions, move into the view of his right mirror.

If the guy signal right also,

then hes telling you that the road is clear for overtaking on the opposite lane.

If he bochap you then overtake by the right on your own intiative.

The first bike overtaking, once you are past the truck, open as much space as possible from it, , then go back to the centre of the lane.

This method allows space for bikes behind to overtake safely.

Very Often the trucks will bochap you on narrow roads.

Try not to overtake on the left in case something runs out onto the narrow bike lane suddenly.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, DO NOT OVERTAKE AT THE SAME TIME. Do it bike by bike.

Riding in the mountains, always assume there is a F1 driver coming at you around the corners. He/ she will be on your lane then swerve into the corner onto his/her lane. Even when riding on straight roads dont ride in the middle of lane keep slightly left so that have clear space for opposite drivers to overtake.

Max range of 200km or 1hr in equivalent before refueling

Sorry abit confused by this statement, do you mean u guys plan to ride 200Km then look for fuel or ride 1 hour then look for fuel

Not advisable for the long distance legs. IMHO better to ride abt 300Km then lookout for petrol. In Thai, at 120-130kM/h for 300Km = 2 1/2 hrs of riding

Once you guys have cleared Sin - Thai leg, body already conditioned for long riding.

ATWIN >> What is the fuel range of the AT going with you guys? I remembered that he told me that his calculation based on city/traffic riding. Highway riding totally different Fuel Consumption much better cruising at constant 100-120KM/H. Get him to test by riding at this speed on malaysia leg. After full pump at G.P. Next stop for is normally Seremban in order to spread distance between legs evenly. Maybe can go on further until his reserve lights lights up then pump.

There is quite a number of petrol kiosks after exit 214 to KLIA so no worries.

This stretch abt 60-70Km b4 rejoining NSH.

Dont share itinerary to locals

Thailand very safe compared to Malaysia so dont worry too much.

Its Ok to give rough destinations because they might be able to recommend interesting places to visit along the way. Example a festival might be occuring at X place along the route or good places to eat.

BikeRs - THINGS TO BRING FOR THE TRIP (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

- Riding Jacket with Padding

- Leather gloves covering wrists

- Boots/Safety shoes covering ankles

- Jeans (with padding recommended)

Despite its high cost, a good waterproof touring suit and boots is highly advisable.

Even if its a small spill, it will protect you from cuts, bruises, sprained ankes etc.

Waterproof important so that you do not have to waste time puttting on and off raincoats. Even if no rain, the morning fog/mist in the mountains can get your clothes damp. As such you will be freezing your balls off when riding.

Last Dec up at Pu Chi Fa it got so fxxking cold that I had to zip on the thermal wear as well

- Slippers (optional)

Slippers not recommended. A good pair of sandals is. Good when you go for a swim at waterfalls(slippers easily slip off when climbing rocks) or short walks around guesthouses to look for food.

Comfortable pair of sneakers is also recommended if you guys intend to spend time exploring larger cities like Chiang Mai on foot.

For me have always brought both.

- Tank Bag (optional)

If have tank bra already, attach on map bank highly recommended.

For easy reference on route markers like Highway numbers.

Way to troublesome and waste of time to always stop dismount and then retrieve map from boxes.

Can also store bike documents inside for easy access at Thai Border crossing or

at rare road blocks in Thailand where they want to check your documents.

Just remember to use Ziploc bags to store maps and docus coz the mapbag is not waterproof.

Can put compass also.

- Handphone with autoroam in Malaysia & thailand

Good investment to buy a Thai Sim card each. Only about $15.

Cheaper than to use IDD rates at $2+/min in case you guys need to contact each other. Call back to SG also cheaper coz you only pay overseas call rate.

For Bike - THINGS TO BRING FOR THE TRIP (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED):[/

The basic spares pretty well covered already.

For tools, make sure have enough to strip undercowl, change fuel pump, front fairing and crashbars besides the tyres.

Try to spend a day to strip abovementioned parts to see if any tools are lacking.

Make sure to try on all d bikes coz of different brand crashbars etc.

Tool kit from honda insufficient.

1. Can get a full set of stainless steel metric allen keys from hardware shop only $10+

2. Long nose plier, coz tool kit only got normal plier.

3. Spark Plug removal tool in Honda kit is also useless coz its too short too remove spark plug easily.

4. Wire cutter.

5. Wire tape for wrapping copper wires and 3M rubber tape

6. Tyre pressure guage.

- Fuel additives(optional but encouraged).

No need coz 91 more than sufficient for Thai roads. As I said b4, only difference is acceleration from 100 to 160km/H take a few more seconds. :cheeky:

- Bike cover & lock

- Disc lock/Chain lock

Bike cover not necessary to cover bike will get very dirty when riding.

Plus waste of time folding cover every morning.

Sorry me lazy bum

Locks no need also lah just mainstand handlebar lock can already.

Very safe in Thailand.

Basic Medical Preparation:

- Simple F.A.Ds.

- Paracetamol(Panadol) for aches/fever, cold/flu & diahorreoa.

- Dehydration sachets.

- 1 x 1ltr drinking water(distilled).

Can buy travel first aid kit from polyclinic.

almost everything inside have liao except for need to buy rubber gloves.

Why rubber gloves coz more hygenic lor no point cleaning wounds with disinfectant then use bare hands to put on bandage.

Do check for expiry dates if you guys already have.

- Insurance(singapore & malaysia)/Road Tax*

- PASSPORT*

Remember to buy Compulsory Thai insurance at duty-free complex after malaysia Border. Opened by 8AM+(SG time) can buy duty free ciggies and hard liquor there as well. If reach earlier duty-free open but insurance booth maybe not.

Since got newbie, make sure passport expiry more than 6 months otherwise Malaysia also cannot enter.

Some nuts and bolts need 2 pieces of same size spanner, so make sure.

For places not in our mapbook I use the Lonely Planet Gude :thumb:

Those places not in Mapbook can only give you rough description.

Pls note the prices I stated are all for single occupancy. Might be more for 2/3 per room. Prices from Dec 05 / Mar,April,May 06 / Sep 06 so maybe abit diff now

Only things I can remember well are the roads and places to eat.

All no breakfast unless stated.

Abbrv.

Th = Thanon = Road in Thai

Soi = Street in Thai

Hua Hin - Not in our mapbook

Once outside Hua HIn along route 4, junction will be a left turn to bypass.

Go Straight

About 20 Km you will reach Hua Hin town central

along the way you will pass by several resorts and rich man's bungalows on your right blocking view of sea.

At town centre you will reach a traffic junction with a police station diagonally across on the right

Keep on the right lane.

Shortly after you will see a temple on your right.

wont miss the temple coz lots of minibus, tour coach in front of it.

In front of you will be a clock tower.

Main road will run to the left of it.

Take the smaller road on the right of the clock tower.

Reach the next junction turn right.

After turning right, 2 rows of shophouses on both sides.

I stayed at the All Nations Guesthouse (BHT 400/night) on the left hand side somewhere along this stretch. Parking along main road but no problem because first floor is restaurant/pub opened late.

Stayed there 2 days

This road is Th Decha Nuchit.

More guesthouses are available around this area.

Once checked in hunt for a free copy of Hua Hin map.

Dinner eat at Night Market.

Dec 05 stayed at another guethouse somewherelse but that very new so BHT850/night. Not recommended coz further from night market.

If you never turn right at clockhouse but went straight along main road,

some smaller hotels on the left. Some old hotels with pte parking there but rooms

damn terok and price slighlty more than ALL Nations.

Chiang Mai = On our map book Pg 35.

Last stay in Sep 06.

Dont know which route u entering by ?

Assuming you enter by route 11,

you will enter by C-5.

Note evening peak hour this road very heavy traffic.

Just go straight until you cross bridge over river at C-4

After bridge traffic cross junction, left cannot coz traffic one way. right is to Chinese area.

Go straight all the way on 1 way 3 lane road Stick to middle lane

until you reach T joint, not T junction coz no traffic light

Its at C-3 called Tha Pae Gate.

Right cannot turn coz of traffic flow

Turn left onto Kotchasan.

Keep left.

Skip the 1st left turn you see, its a narrow single lane Soi

Turn Left at the next one Th Loi Kroh.

Its a 2 lane single direction road.

Cant miss it bars/pubs on both sides of road.

Go straight until the first small single lane Soi on your right.

Soi 1 Th Loi Kroh

Turn right, shop for booking tours on your right.

Go down this lane until you see a nice apartment building on your right with carpark

Its called Vipa House BHT500/night Stayed here in May & Sep 06

There are a few around here but stayed at Vipa coz rooms abit newer and cleaner.

24 hour security guard also.

Good location coz walking out to Th Loi Kroh turn left are the bars/pubs where I have been sponsored alot of beer playing pool aganst Ang Mohs

Turn right walk 5mins down the road is Chiang Mai night bazaar.

at junction of Th Loi Kroh and Th Chang Khlan Along the way you will pass by a canal.

Once reach junction on your right is a nice hotel then restaurant and coffee joint,

Diagonally acroos junction on right is Macdonalds.

Cross the road towards Macs.

Turn right and walk along the path with shophouses on your left and souvenior stalls on your righ

Walk a few minutes then you will see a street opening on your left.

Walk in and you reach Anusan night market(food!!!)

After you turn in some stalls selling tidbits on both sides of road.

Futher down seafood restaurants(thai zhi char style) on your left,

pass this is open square with tables and chairs Another row of food stalls after that.

This row's stalls sell items like fried chicken rice, oyster omelette, satay etc.

Personally I like the pork leg rice from Zhi Char stall at this row. Its the one next to the road.

Satay quite good but the sauce is sweeter version than SG.

Oyster omelette smells good but never try coz i mai dai kin Aharn Talay (dun eat seafood).

For breakfast, turn left at Start of Soi. Walk past the bars until start of Th Loi Kroh Turn right and walk down against traffic flow until you see a small shop selling delicious beef noodles on your right. Small shop with less than 10 tables Cant miss it. If in doubt just follow the smell HAHA

Mae Hong Son - Not in our mapbook.

As discussed that night after crossroads cafe diagonally right at junction,

next building to look out for is post office on your left.

If you turn left at lane just b4 Post office you will be lead to a small lake.

Once you reach lake you can turn left or right where there are many guesthouses.

BHT400-500/night. The 1 I stayed in Dec05/May06 abit further off on the right so hard to describe.

For food some food stalls around lake in evening time.

Go get your certs and stickers from office and you can ask for MHS map there as well. There is a temple ontop of hill overlooking town nice view and architecture different from Central thai ones due to proximity to burma I think.

Can ride bike up nice place for late afternoon photos as the mountains turn golden in colour. I only realised later got road up. Saw temple at summit of hill and started walking instead after late lunch.

1 burmese style temple at lake as well.

Have never visited the Karen("Long-neck") villages located around MHS coz I hate the idea of " human zoos".

Chiang Saen - not on map book and I did not stay there but looks overdeveloped when I rode though it.

I stayed at Chiang Khong abt 50Km further down. At Chiang Khong stayed at Bamboo Guesthouse in Dec 05. Bamboo Hut BHT 400/night no A/C but no need quite cold at night. Owner is a interesting old man. His wife's breakfast of waffles with honey damn solid. Diner when was there last Dec got food festival, so he recommended I go there eat. May 06 when I crossed over from Laos to Chiang Khong Went there for breakfast again

If I recall correctly he has a daughter in SGP.

Between Chiang Saen and Chianng Khong dun ride on the main road of 1129.

Try to find the road running along Mekong river some part through Thai villages.

Cant describe where to enter from C.S. coz I entered from C.K. After recommendation by one of the GT riders I met at Bamboo guesthouse when I was preparing to leave. His name is David if I recall correctly and his bike is GS650

Chiang Rai - On our mapbook Pg 34

Last Went there Dec 05, May 06 I headed straight from Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai via 1174 then ??? followed by 1, 120 and 118.

Assuming Entering from East after Pu Chi FA pg 11 F-3, via 1232 or 1233 from Wiang Chai.Turn onto Th Phahon Yothin on pg 35 C-3

As I had already spent 2 nights in slightly rustic places in Chaing Khong and up at Doi Mae Salong, decided to stay in hotel here instead.

For guesthouses, at junction in B-3 turn left following brown route some guesthouses around here and Th Jet Yot.

I stayed at Saen Phu hotel on left side of road along Th Banpha Prakan BHT 650/night with breakfast. Got big car park right in front of entrance.

Night market around Th Phahon Yothin after turning left. Area b4 Chiang Rai Bus terminal on map.

Kanchanaburi - On our mapbook Pg 44

Last went early Jan06

Entering from 324 D-3 go Straight pass 1st cross juction with 323.

Reach T-junction C-2

Turn Right

Made mistake of staying at MK hotel BHT 400/night at top of C-5

Recommend you guys stay at guesthouses along riverside instead.

Follow road until the small lane just b4 rail way turns left.

the one after India road in B-3

At end turn left and travel down road lots of guesthouses here but no idea on prices and conditions

Lots of nice riverside dining areas around here.

If want night market there should be one near Railway station.

Get maps from tourist police at Death Railway Bridge area.

Chumphon - ??? never turn in b4, Phuket I think you guys know liao.

Why you guys still want to return on Fri for ???

Might as well spend 1 more day somewhere.

Chiang Mai definitely worth a whole days stay

Can combine walk around temples inside moat area and a short ride up to Doi Suthep. Temple up there got great view of city.

As for return leg can opt to stay 1 more day in Phuket by skipping Hatyai, if too siong to ride 1400Km back to SG, skip Chumphon instead.

Kanchanaburi to Phuket in 1 day can lah unless u want to travel via route 4 from Chumphon junction to Ranong then Phuket.

On map Ranong to Phuket route 4 looks like a nice ride along seaside In reality no view of Sea at all!! did it in early jan06 from Ranong to Krabi.

May 06 after BKK rode all the way to Phuket by 4 after chumphon took 41 at Surat Thani took 401 Sunset ride along 4 after 401 and Takua Pa near Khao Lak and on to Phuket Sibei SWEE Can see sea around there liao. Route 401 later part winds uphill around limestone hills.

BKK to Phuket abt same distance as Kanchanaburi to Phuket.

Wasted 1 hour somewhere after BKK coz kena nail in rear tyre and rode slowly to next petrol kiosk when i finally realised it due to loss in tyre pressure.

BKK to Phuket reached Patong Beach abt 8pm.

2 bad you guys need to spend Christmas and New Year with family in Sg else

can make use of public holidays for a longer ride.

Oh yeah last thing to add

03.12.06 - Hatyai ------Hua Hin (aprox. 740km) ............"Siong ride"

Add long straight and boring as well.

At the beach for Loy Krathong

Hi, my AT don't have reserve lights. how i tested in singapore during my city driving is that i switch it to normal fuel and travel til the bike die on me due to no more fuel. that clocks abt 300km. then i switch it to reserve fuel to continue my journey to nearest petrol station. i have asked around but it seems no bike shop does the fuel meter for AT. anyway, for this thai trip, if i top up every 300 km, i am already quite safe. Thanks.

SimplyBoChap>> Thks for spending your time & effort for the info. I'm planning to cover our ride back a bit shorter distance eg. 400km -500km so that we can still got time to explore the town or place of interest in the town area. Maybe i will try to skip Chumphon and stop at Ranong ( from Kanchanaburi to Ranong approx.582).

Tony>> Let me know the next stop from Ranong as i'm planning the return route via Route 4 or u want directly stop at Hatyai n that will be quite tiring. Anyway i haven't try the route to Phuket....

Anyway try to switch on the reserve at all time so that u don't need to worry the bike half way just die off, just keep track the distance will do.

YZFx>>moving out on 27.11.06................for hw long & where izzit. maybe got chance to meetup at hatyai for dinner.

ATwin >> Did Kanchanaburi to Ranong in Jan 06. Thats why advise u to skip route 4 from Ranong to Phuket. Only interesting part is after Takua Pa from Hat Khao Lak to Phuket. After Khao Lak, not sure if the Thai Coast Guard boat that got washed up by tsunami to inland is still there.

Ranong nothing much interesting in town but then again I only stayed a night coz returning "home" to Krabi Hehe.

The waterfall just b4 Ranong abit failure after the 1 I visited in Kanchanaburi did not even bother to take photos.

Short portion of ride between Chumphon and Ranong was interesting can see the sea amongst some low hills. IMHO the 401 between Surat Thani and Phuket much better ride.

After Phuket if you just stick to route 4 south to Hatyai abit boring if possible ride along the 3number routes lesser traffic and better scenery.
