just got back today...fine weather all the way..only rain was when coming back in malaysia...

fantastic ride and had a good chat with some of the GT riders, Ian and David (Silverhawk) along the way to chiangrai to watch motocross competition...

got too adventurous and tried a very steep gravelled road to Doi Ang Khang to camp but slided down the slope and broke a footpeg...the modified tzm footpeg (from Fang)'s rubber and slider nut couldn't make it the whole trip though. GOtta get the GT-riders to modify their description of the Doi Ang Khang route...no more asphalt all the way..even the kups' pillions have to get down to climb the gravelled stretch.

i think i will reach the 200K mark soon man...

nope. I took an unmarked route (1178 as mentioned by GTriders) from Fang and hoped to enter Doi Ang Khang via north thru Noi Lae and go out by 1340 to Doi Saloeng and then Mae Hong Son. I have some friends who went this way last year and the roads were still asphalt. So did the GT riders reviews.

**taken from GT riders**

DOI ANG KHANG - 330 kms. See map. Routes 107 - 1178 - 1340 - 1249 - 107. The recommended route is Chiang Mai - Chiang Dao - Arunothai - Sinchai - Doi Ang Khang - Nor Lae - Fang - Chiang Mai. This is the number one overnight ride from Chiang Mai, and only recommended for experienced riders. The Doi Ang Khang roads are all narrow and winding, as well as being the steepest in North Thailand! If you want to exhilarate yourself on amazing roads that run along the Burma border with spectacular scenery then do yourself a favour and try this one for a brilliant overnight ride. The 4kms descent from Nor Lae towards Fang is extremely steep and totally amazing - how & why do they build roads like this that drop straight off the end of the mountain?

Do the DAK loop & spend the night in Fang (or even Tha Ton), before returning to Chiang Mai, or carrying on North to the Golden Triangle. For full details see A Motorcycle Guide To The Golden Triangle pages 46-49 & 58-59. Note too that the Nor Lae - Nong Tao - Fang road is now ALL asphalt, (contrary to the dirt status described on P59.)

**

Now, the slopes are gravelled and a layer of pebbles cover the slopes which are really steep (I did ascent while GT riders recommends descent). And dun try this in the late afternoon like I did. I had to ride back in the night to Fang without my right footpeg.

WIll let u guys know the webbie for the photos soon. Very lucky to see the hills of sunflower blooms and loy krathong.

kenny>> Toong Bua Tong...the mexican sunflower hill.:thumb: ..we miss out the loy krathong... the worst road conditons we met was from Doi Pha Phueng toward Phu Chi Fa..totally muddy road. Hope that the road condition is ok by now.

Ahh..I must have missed you guys. Been riding nonstop from Hua Hin on that day, so must have missed you.

Is your bike ok? Hope all turns out fine. Do try to ride all the little unmarked roads up in northern thailand on the PN maps. I was so tempted to try an off road section that cuts from Samoeng to Pai but with 2 loaded alus and a pillion, it was a little challenging.

And do the Doi Ang Khang route with a camp on Doi Ang Khang hill. They have a camp site there. Very cold!! and do it in the clockwise direction. It's easier to go down on the steep gravel portions.

btw, the sunflower area is at Khun Yaem at a place call Mae U Khor, south of MHS. try to get there soon. The bloom might end pretty soon!!

oh another thing.

if the bike really cant move, load it up the train and head back as pillion. Or spend a few nights at the Bamboo House on River Kwai...200B a night only..witha scenic view of the bridge. hahah..
