Ah boy ar? Local or original? I assume u check the metrics clearly. If kena old stock, its gona feel hard and uneven faster den u cn imagine... Comes with balancing? U change ur valves to the L-shaped one? Ez to pump mah!

Oook.... How to check if its local or original. This is my first time buying tyres from ah boy aft got recomendation from a friend riding blackbird. On previous occasions, saw few big superbikes buy from there too. So i assume its good. The person that fixed my tyres says its not old stock and looking at it seems fine.... My front rim is L valve rear is straight.

i am shortlisting a couple of bikes for consideration as the final upgrade.

i have some questions for the old hats here...

a) vara 1k isnt available from boon siew, right? last time i went there, i was being pushed towards the 125.

b) if not at boon siew, which shop sells it? and whats the latest machine price?

c) re maintenance, easily serviced by just abt any workshop, or specific workshops?

d) are parts readily available?

e) how does this compare with other similar touring bikes such as gs, ktm, tenere? i know this will be subjective but just want to hear the feedback from existing and past riders, reviews, if any, etc.

f) and i presume the african twin is no longer in production and for sale?

many thanks.

not an old hat here ahah but as asked -

a) vara 1k isnt available from boon siew, right? last time i went there, i was being pushed towards the 125.

boon siew dont sell em anymore, not in their website

b) if not at boon siew, which shop sells it? and whats the latest machine price?

bike production use to have a brand new one abt a year or two back, dont know if its still there

c) re maintenance, easily serviced by just abt any workshop, or specific workshops?

any shops that does big bikes would be able too service, basic v-twin engine

d) are parts readily available?

parts are available easily n lotsa accessories online

e) how does this compare with other similar touring bikes such as gs, ktm, tenere? i know this will be subjective but just want to hear the feedback from existing and past riders, reviews, if any, etc.

vara is a good adventure tourer, not an actual off road bike coz its a pig in weight , but then again depends on the rider's balls of steel, i guess its more comparable to GS then to KTM . Its weights abt the same as the Super tenere

f) and i presume the african twin is no longer in production and for sale?

no more in production last production was in early 2000s.

cult bike, great 2nd hand value here in sg hahahaaa

many thanks.

tats my humble 02 cents worth, hope it helps

thanks for the reply, sambora. u must be a bonjovi fan....

some additional responses/qns in blue:

a) vara 1k isnt available from boon siew, right? last time i went there, i was being pushed towards the 125.

boon siew dont sell em anymore, not in their website

so the main qn is whether it is still in production, and whether it is still available as a firsthand bike? seems like there isnt a clear answer to that.

b) if not at boon siew, which shop sells it? and whats the latest machine price?

bike production use to have a brand new one abt a year or two back, dont know if its still there

this is related to the above. nm, i will call ard to find out if any new ones available, and then update over here accordingly.

btw, anyone know of the machine price the last time they came across one? i want to know how it compares with the other bikes in the same category.

c) re maintenance, easily serviced by just abt any workshop, or specific workshops?

any shops that does big bikes would be able too service, basic v-twin engine

this is good to hear. my current bike is rather uncommon, and hence for parts, need to return to the main dealer for key servicing/replacement of parts. other routine servicing can rely on the usual workshops.

that said, where are the more vara-specialised workshops that vara owners patronise? any recommendations?

d) are parts readily available?

parts are available easily n lotsa accessories online

good to hear that.

e) how does this compare with other similar touring bikes such as gs, ktm, tenere? i know this will be subjective but just want to hear the feedback from existing and past riders, reviews, if any, etc.

am not really looking at the offroad bikes, cos little chance to do that here, unless u are living in africa, inner china/mongolia, etc. for full offroad exp, should be looking at those smaller scramblers - at least should be lighter and more easily handled in soft terrain.

f) and i presume the african twin is no longer in production and for sale?

no more in production last production was in early 2000s.

cult bike, great 2nd hand value here in sg hahahaaa

am guessing just the same. too bad, the name has been ringing ard the various forums.

many thanks.

If u are really interested in answers, come down to one of our meetups and shoot whatever Qs. If nt dis thread gona look like a short story book.

U are strongly advised to see the bike for itself. Even if u seen it b4 talk face to face always better. There is a rider saying; If u try to choose a bike, it will never end. You will never be satisfied. The bike will choose u Eventually. Cuz it choosing u has answered all neverending resolves.

Nt my 2 cents but close to a dollar!!

Guru,

Agree totally, but when is the next meetup? Noticed from past posts the meetups are usually on Fridays and as early as 9-10pm. Weeknights a bit difficult for me, and timing a little early too. My exit permits are hard to come by. But i will definitely try, so let me know when the next one is. Got loads of questions that need clarification.

In any case, i wonder if the group of varas i saw at kulai nasi lemak 2 Sat ago (17 Sep) are you guys.

Cheers.

Hi bro, i definitely felt the lost everutime someone came along and said YES to me. It was bitter happiness. The Vara has not only been a fren for over 4 years to me, but also a bro, in all my ups and downs. It is the first bike i bought with my own money. It had soooo many feelings attached. I thought i could cope with the loss, but i must say, when the day finally came, i lost it. I had sleepless nights feeling the loss every bit of the way. It was tough. I know how you felt bro.

But now that you are gonna keep it, i applaude your decision and may you enjoy many more years with her.

She was my doctor, She was my pychiatrist, She was my Bestest Friend, She was my shoulder to cry on and she had seen me grow from a humble Design Consultant to Senior Design Consultant to Design Manager to Senior design Manager and finally a Business owner before i sold her.

I will buy a tourer soon, and i have rode the Vara and know her well. I might, I might just get an EFI to enjoy. The Vara is one machine i feel complete on. Riding Fujis bike the other day at a meetup made me realise what i had given up in my quest for the track.

This is one bike that is larger than life and comes to life when i straddle her. Something very hard to beat. The gixxer was bought with a purpose, and although i didnt wanna sell the Vara, i was tempted or rather seduced by the high trade in and i gave in to temptation telling myself to use my brains and not my heart to think. They say all good things must come to an end...and 8212 had to also.

But the memories will last forever. The friends will last forever, the love will last forever. Varadero FQ 8212 S. Thank You for Once being mine.

I will be back guys,,, just matter of time and when the bank balance says its ok to do so. hehheh..Till then, ppl, enjoy your VARADEROS aka FATGERLS and Jason bro, yours is not only FATGERL, Yours needs to go on the TAF programme. Her belly too big liao. Hahahhah!!!

Bros, feel EMO today... I was a whiskey close to selling my fatger. I didn't realized that when the buyer said he will take it. My heart sank... suddenly I was lost, felt like a parent sending away his kid away not knowing if I will ever see the kid again.

But the feeling only lasted 1 day, as the buyer couldn't buy it as the price is too much for him factoring the insurance.

I had decided to keep her and sell the car ( which I did today =0 ) . Guess its a passion riding bike . Its never a transport , unlike a car.

So to those bro who had sold off their fatger.. did you have the same feeling as moi?

Anyway I will renew her COE, do up the bloody crashbars and who can guide me to a good paint shop? I wanna go ROTHMANS haha

Sorry, but a little nostalgia here back to Nov 2010.

Am going through this thread and these 2 posts brought a smile to my face.

You guys must really adore your Varas a lot to feel like this.

Havent seen any other posts in SBF that described such overwhelming emotions.

I think I may feel the same if and when I do sell off my very first bike eventually.

Hope to see you guys during a meetup soon. But be prepared for loads of questions concerning your respective rides.

Cheers
