Hi fellow bikers,out there, I have this perpetual habit of looking at my temperature gauge, think every traffic light stop, in slow traffic , so it is bothering me & affecting my concentration.

I have a VFR800 year 98, all is well , change coolant ( guess too much ), fan works etc.... but in slow traffic it is always 242F , yep my bike has a temp gauge in Farenheit, so at 242F is doing 116C , think that is really high , can anyone help and tell me it is normal so I can set my eyes on the road instead !!

thanks a million to any kind souls out there

That's really high. By right, the fan should be able to cap it below 110degC. You might want to check if the coolant is overflowing through the reserve tank (faulty pressure cap) and if your radiator fan is coming on at 212F (100C).

Ok, back to Victoria Secrets!

normally in damn slow traffic i think the temperature sure rise... i have one friend his bike rise until the gauge reaching the red line.. den he off the engine.. let it cool awhile.. of cus not in the middle of the road.. stop somewhere..

Its not normal..

Overheat can cause major problems and a lot of $$$

Can try check your radiator or the radiator joint?

hi i m having cooling problems on my fireblade 400 too.. can ani kind soul hlp mi diagnose the problem?

wen the temp gauge hits between 1/2 and 3/4.. before the fan kicks in.. and at this point i off the engine.. coolant vents out from the coolant overflow reservoir from the rubber hose near the right foot rest.. i juz replaced the radiator cap yesterday..

prior to replacement of the cap.. wenever the fan kicks in or at a temp near there.. the bike will juz overflow coolant onto the ground wen i m on the road.. i m damn scared the coolant will kena my legs and it affects my concentration wen i ride..

i alreadi flushed the system twice and top it off liao...

i realli dunno wat is wrong already..

By turning off your engine you stop the water pump from circulating the coolant from radiator back through the engine block, where its needed. In effect you are not allowing your system to do its job. Certainly check your cooing system, the Thermostat, temp sender gauge, radiator cap and rdiator as well as water pump (assuming your engine has one, not all bikes do).

Taking each in turn:

Thermostat, should open at designed temperature, its job is to allow engine to reach 'optimum' operating temp' before coolant from radiator starts flowing through;

Temp Sender gauge, it sends signal to your gauge which is temp of coolant, it should be of correct range> There are many different ranges available and on several occasions I have seen wrong temp send fitted;

CRadiator Cap, fitting firmly, of correct temp and correct Pressure relief range. If the system over pressurises the cap should allow excess pressure to vent, instead of blowing out part of your more expensive system. Make sure the Rubber seal is intact;

water pump, its usualy located on engine, driven by spur gear or shaft from gear box sometimes carnk. Check that there are no leaks around housing, that impeller, usuallu rubber shaped like a starfish, is intact and able to do its job.

You may not be able to carry out all of these checks yourself, such as your Impeller, inside the water pump. In which case will have to get mech to check it for you.

Good luck

Hey Guys, guess found out the problem , for the benefit of thers,first mech says can be problem of water pump , then open radiator sees water moving , one possiblity down , next he says can be gasket etc,,... check the engine oil ok , no traces of water etc... Guess what he fixed a car radiator cap same quoted 1.1bar but then I insisted today to change to Honda original , now it is not going over 95C ha!! going enjoy the V-4 rumble again ,

so darren , you might want to check the cap one more time, & get Honda original cost $30 , chiong from Thailand $20 , not worth to save that 10 baht ,oops bucks !! and bust the gasketor cause other major damage !!!

Don't think too hard about it. You don't need a reason.

JUST RIDE.

eh bros.. i found the solution to my problem too.. me and my mech discovered a small chip in the region on the radiator that the cap is supposed to sit on.. due to the small chip.. pressure is unable to build up in the system and as a result coolant is pushed out into the coolant reservoir via the small chip..

he mended the small chip for me using epoxy and so far it is working so good..
