ROAD RACING - Biaggi Wins First World Superbike Race

Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra's Max Biaggi made a stunning World Superbike debut by winning the season-opening race at the Losail Circuit in Doha, Qatar.

 

The former MotoGP star, who found himself without a ride of any kind for the 2006 season, proved that he could quickly adapt to the heavier four-strokes on Pirelli tires.

 

Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's James Toseland was second with Xerox Ducati's Lorenzo Lanzi a distant third.

 

Biaggi led from off the start, then ran wide in the first corner, with Yamaha Motor Italy teammates Troy Corser and Nori Haga coming past. Biaggi fell one more spot when Toseland dropped him to fourth.

 

Toseland took the lead on lap two and was joined by Biaggi on the fifth lap, the pair soon to separate from the pack. The duo went back and forth, with Biaggi taking the lead across the line for the first time on the 13th of 18 laps.

 

With three laps to go, Biaggi built a comfortable lead which he held to the end. His margin of victory was 1.483 seconds.

 

Lanzi took third from Biaggi’s teammate Yukio Kagayama two laps from the end and finished 12.5 secs. behind Toseland. Kagayama was fourth.

 

Lanzi’s teammate Troy Bayliss began the defense of his world championship with a fifth place finish. Bayliss is running his familiar number “21,” rather than he number “1.”

 

Suzuki Germany’s Max Neukirchner finished well behind Bayliss, but just in front of the second Hannspree Ten Kate Honda of Roby Rolfo.

 

The Yamahas were next, Haga fading to a distant eight in front of teammate Corser, who just edged Team Sterilgarda Ducati’s Ruben Xaus.
