There are many varieties to choose from. For me, I will go for those mesh type for cooler ride. Scootie rider are protected by windshield and fairing. Therefore the rider doesnt get hit by windblast. Naturally we also lose the element of wind to cool our body during rides.

If heavy rain, i find a place to stop and swap to rain gears. Light rain, I just ride on.

Last but no least. For my daily rides, gloves and a pair of good riding boots is a must

thanks! definitely looking for jackets and gloves but with a scooter aesthetic, any recommendations to the brands available here in Singapore?

curious though, besides the mandatory helmet, not many riders wear any gear at all! may i know why?

thanks in advance!

Hot humid weather is one of the reason why they don't wear gear... I personally commute to and from work wiith an armoured mesh jacket and gloves. I also just recently got myself a full length riding boots. If it rains, I wear my rain suit over my jacket.

Haha. I wear mesh padded jacket, flip up helmet, neck brace (may sound stupid, but at traffic light stops, I can lean back as if it were a pillow), riding gortex boots, and eventually, knee-shin guard.

I recently collided with a car. Was wearing all the above except knee-shin guard. Was quite fortunate to only get away with minor bruises on my right knee and hind thigh.

When it comes to safe riding, don't play play.

I suggest a komine armored jacket... Mesh... Isn't waterproof but very breathable material... Cos do remember that scooters can't go really fast... U can go to Motoworld at kaki bukit or lavender... They sell komine jackets... Or u can go to G-max race at ubi avenue 1/2 and get their Arlen ness semi leather jackets if u can bear the heat from the sun... Either way, the jackets are good to use up to one year for everyday usage... ;)

Start with Hodaka motorworld first, then you can shop around for better or cheaper option. Generally Komine and RS taichi are reasonably priced and look reasonably good. It's all preference, just need to start somewhere.

I recommend Hodaka to shop because you can try the jacket there without pressure and there is a good range to choose from.

There's 2 branches. Biggest is at Ubi and a smaller one at Lavender.

It's a mentality thingy.

Nobody is wearing, why should I?

They are afraid that they'll look silly and people will laugh at them.

Until met with an accident then realize that safety gear is a must.

After buying all the gear and wearing it, felt stupid wearing it and throw them aside until met another accident again.

Too bulky and troublesome to carry around.

Hot and humid.

Sweat will smell funky if not dried properly.

Troublesome to wash.

Scooter with lots of storage space is a boon to keep all the safety gear unlike motorcycle.

Now, that's more like it!

yea definitely agree with parotae, i rarely see people riding with the proper gear and always wonder wot were they thinking

5 - 10 mins to the nearby store to pick something up? sure, slippers and shorts?! yea, convenient. but wot happens if something happens??

was it worth it to experience that 10 minutes of wind in your toes?

ask some mates over here and the top reasons i've heard so far is:

it's costly

its a hassle to wear gear

its too humid or hot

you get laughed at for looking like a power ranger, i'd admit, i do chuckle when a middle aged porker dons a sports bike jacket!

but there options out there now right? armoured perforated or mesh jacket for riding and keeping cool, though most are really "sportsy" looking though.

costly or a hassle? Does the gear cost more or a skin graft or even living to ride another day?

laughing at you for protecting your life? i reckon their perspectives are too shallow to consider bothering with anyways, Until they experience road rash themselves or an accident happening to one of their mates..

just curious, how do you guys transition from riding to work with your gear on, to being at work without your colleagues giving you the eyeball? i've got a feeling that's wot holding most people back?

my dream list would be:

something breathable,

CE rated armour

easily stowed OR more ''urban dweller'' and less '' hey! i'm a biker!'' so i can wear it on and off the bike

thanks for the recommendation, any idea how much those komine jackets cost, they seem pretty decent, but still sporty. will definitely pop down to have a fit. any other brands, designs, options anyone can recommend? how bout footwear?

Well said... For komine, the price ranges from $120-$380 if I'm not wrong... Just for the riding jacket... Some doesn't include the chest armor while those more expensive ones include it as a set... U have to go down to browse yourself... Best to go to kaki bukit outlet as its bigger than the lavender one and have a wider variety to choose from... Other brands are Berik, arlen ness which can be bought from g-max at ubi. Not sure exactly where, but if u really want to know, I can look for my receipt and give u the address... Retail price of the jacket was $850-$875, bought at a year end sale for $272.xx at 70% off I think... Lol :)

Usually those ridding scooters will not done full gear as it is too sporty for a classic motor like say vespa. I am ridding a Mojito which is too classic looking bike (like a lambretta) so wearing a full face helmet does spoil the classic look. As for boots, they are a must coz feet really get punished most. A leather jacket is what I usually wear, but no armor at the moment. The weather here is too humid for a thick armor, more so when waiting in trafic. For jackets' choices you can stroll at Regina Jln Besar. they do have several choices on display to try on, as well as boots.Have a good time and enjoy your ride

I just love the looks, feel and sound of an old good Guzzi, though it has been around since the time of my Grandfather. I guess "they" don't do things like that anymore! Well it's not true.

"They" still do URALS

I ride gilera Runner n I wear flip full face helmet, komine mesh armour jacket n gloves everyday to/back work. Some colleagues laughed but I don't care cause it's my skin not theirs. I am considering knee n shin guards but difficult cause i wear office attire to work.

But I do cheat a little when making short trips to market n convenient stores.

i did a lot of research on jackets and you can look at jackets that is meant for summer wear. it has the shoulder and elbow guards as well as option to get back brace. it has the basic requirement and yet when riding, you dont feel warm as it has so many vents for air to go thru.

You can take a look at Daniese jackets - Air tec range. about $375 in singapore, or if u are every going to HK its about $100 dollars cheaper.

Gloves, you can look at the same, those for summer wear, Alphinestar has this summer gloves, which has CE knuckles protections.

Sadly i have yet to invest in a good riding boots and pants.. thought it may look silly, but hey its my life my skin.

normally i fold my shirt and only wear a t-shirt when i am heading to the office. gotten traveller thingy for folding your clothes with less crease.

you need not worry about how ppl look at you. end of the day, your life, your skin.

P.s once saw a lady riding a vespar, riding jacket, full face helmet, gloves, i thought that was hot...

I feel naked unless I am fully geared up even when riding on a low cc scooter. Even when i go tar pau food.

1. Shoei Neotec FF;

2. Komine Mesh Jacket with elbow, shoulder and back guards;

3. Komine gloves with knuckle guards;

4. Kevlar jeans;

5. SIDI Street riding boots

6. EAR PLUGS (Howard Leight) - very important to me (do you know wind noise goes above 130DB and is the silent killer making you deaf day by day? Google it. Scientifically proven. Do not debate with me until you have tried it. Sounds which you NEED to hear such as horns and sirens becomes CLEARER. You become less fatigued after an expressway ride.)

Make it a habit to have full gear ALL the time and wearing it will be second-nature and takes less than 5 mins.

And your equipment does NOT have to stink. I can take on anyone's challenge that my ONE year old helmet and gloves used for 50kms everday smells BETTER than brand new.

U can try this Motoair Jacket. Been using this everyday to work... Not bad... It is like an air bag like in a car... It will inflate if u fly when meet in an accident.
