Yamaha XMax "Eating" Engine Oil Issue - Please Check Your Xmax!

The Yamaha XMax has a common problem among many owners here in Singapore whereby there is excessive usage of the bike's engine oil leading to the oil level falling to dangerously low levels in shorts periods of time.

There was a recent case whereby an XMax owner checked his engine oil level and was shocked to see the the oil level port was almost completely empty!

To prevent engine damage or expensive repair bills, always make sure to:

1. Check your engine oil level weekly
2. Make sure your XMax is on the mainstand to ensure accurate oil levels
3. Check oil level after the engine has warmed up and is up to operating temperature
4. Follow the oil service interval as stated in your manual or even more frequent if you are a heavy user
5. Use only approved engine oil for your XMax

Bear's Garage, another very popular workshop among the XMax community, has chimed in to share their 2 cents on the whole XMax engine oil consumption issue (WARNING: The pictures looks NASTY!!):

The Yamaha XMAX 300, one of the more popular models on the road now. With it's decent fuel consumption vs power, massive underseat compartment and array of aftermarket accessories, there is no wonder why these bikes sell like hotcakes. 

There is however, a big issue with the XMAX that majority of riders know about. In a lot of cases, the engine consumes engine oil at a higher rate compared to other bikes in it's class, even low mileage bikes, and it gets worse with time. This particular one we're documenting isn't as lucky.

If you look at the pictures carefully, excessive piston blow-by is the culprit that stained this 30,000km+ engine causing the crankcase area to turn brown compared to other parts of the engine. Lack of lubrication has caused the piston to seize and stick to the cylinder walls. No visible engine oil leaks can be seen upon inspection, so the engine oil must have gone somewhere right? Now the engine needs a cylinder and piston kit replacement. 

The signs are there: knocking sounds, white smoke emitted from the exhaust and a strong smoky smell(from the burning of engine oil) everytime you stop the bike. The only precaution you can take for now is to make sure the engine oil never drops below minimum so that the engine has the proper lubrication it needs. 

Until we see better quality aftermarket parts replacements, we can only offer factory original parts as repair. So take a peek at that engine oil level once every few days, because it's good practise (for riders of all bikes) and it'll save your wallet from damage in the long run. In the mean time, look at these before and enjoy the after pictures.
