Mid-Drive ebike good for commuting?

Recommended Posts

Guys , came across this Mid-Drive ebike, LTA approved. Tired of paying high COE. Thinking of getting one for commuting to workplace. Wanna listen to your opinions first before pulling the purchase trigger. Pros and Cons ?

This bike I'was looking at : https://jimove.sg/products/snapcycle-roadmaster

If you're only using it for commuting, you might as well save yourself some money and buy a hub drive instead. Mid-drives are generally torque sensors and so is this one. Torque sensors are great for eMTBs where you may accidentally find yourself having to move up a slope at a gear that is too high from a dead stop. But they are also very poor at conserving your energy because they only multiply the torque you apply to the motor. Meaning you need to pedal harder to go faster.

Hub drives are cheaper and usually come with a cadence sensor, where the faster you spin the pedals, the faster the motor goes, so all you need to do is just put your bike in the lowest gear, highest motor setting and freewheel all the way to office without breaking a sweat.

Also hub drives still work if you snap your chain. Mid drives are about as useless as a regular bicycle if your chain snaps, or worse you're now pushing your 20kg bike around instead of a 8 kg regular bicycle.

You mean this kind of hub-motor ebikes running around on the streets? https://jimove.sg/products/mc-electric-bicycle-foldable-ebike

They all have a slot-in type battery, which makes the whole bike look so ugly. LOL. And they are generally small in frame size.

After searching for some time, i found the Roadmaster Mid-Drive model suits the best what i was looking for (hidden battery and wiring, large frame , decent workmanship, etc). Does any of you all have any experience with this kind of mid-drive ebike ? Will it break down very often ? What precaution do i need to better maintain it ?
