Might want to read my 4T FAQ. It covers on how to read the viscosity grade and the various quality in engine oil.

Commonly found R4 is 10W50, 5W40 is also available but rare.

But is it a bit biased to Maxima

Well, the poster asked how to read the viscosity, not which is the best 4T. I think the topic is properly covered in detail in the FAQ and universally applies to all brands, so I don't really see a problem  Besides all other material in the FAQ are factual and based on reputable sources, many are technical tips which also apply universally.

Yes it may be show some bias towards their products, but no more than any other info page supplied by a product manufacturer/supplier.

The information is accurate and relevant to the question asked, whether or not they decide to use Castrol R4 or any other brand is up to them

In any case "the heavier the better'' is not a good idea idea. A heavier oil will take longer to warm up, slower to be distributed by your lubrication system, and may be too heavy to collect and dissipate engine heat.

Many motorcycle engines are designed so that the cooling abilities of the CORRECT OIL, will help in managing your engines heat. Thats not a universal truth of course, much depends on what size, design and cooling methods are used on your particular engine.

Just be thankful you don't have to change engine oil from a nice warm summer of +28Deg Cel to a winter of -30DegC.

Don't guess...

The recommended engine oil is shown on your bike's manual.
