A newbie plans leasure trip to Penang during Xmas-New Year holidays. I can depart/return any day.

Itinerary:

- 1 day trip north

- 2 days in Penang

- 1 day trip to the mainland nearby Penang (whats most interesting to see there?)

- 1 day trip back

Alternative route on the way back - cross to East KB and going down along East Coast - worth the effort???

Qs:

- best days to go (less traffic especially trucks & buses)?

- days to avoid (super-busy everywhere)?

- how easy to go through KL (nonstop) lots of junctions there - are the highway signs clear to head north?

- what must bring (bike ownership papers, SG insurance cert etc)

- can I buy toll card in SG shops or will buy it in the first toll in MY?

- best overnight stopover (if riding full day is too tough), I just need a simple A/C room

- best emergency number/service (if things go wrong)

I will be riding solo on Vara125 reliable serviced 10yo, 70-90km/h, no rush, min risk, holidays.

Anyone wants to join?:-)

Qs:

- best days to go (less traffic especially trucks & buses)?

weekdays are normally best. Just stick to the left lane or the expressway shoulder if you are going at 70-90km/h cos the buses and trucks would be hurtling down at 110km/h.

- days to avoid (super-busy everywhere)?

Most days are the same I feel.

- how easy to go through KL (nonstop) lots of junctions there - are the highway signs clear to head north?

There is an expressway bypass so you don't have to head into KL per se. From JB, just head up north on the NSW. Near KL there will be an expressway turnoff (E6 I think) that will bypass the whole KL region and you can continue heading up north on the northward portion of the NSW. Signs are clearly marked out - just follow the sign green expresssway signs for Penang / Ipoh and you'll be fine.

- what must bring (bike ownership papers, SG insurance cert etc)

Bring the LTA certificate of registration in your name (can print from LTA website or just photocopy your transfer paper. Also SG insurance cert as you mentioned. Passport, money and credit card will get you out of most sort of trouble. Oh, you need Cashcard too, if you are entering by 2nd link.

- can I buy toll card in SG shops or will buy it in the first toll in MY?

You'll have to buy it in MY. Motorcyclists get to bypass almost all the toll on NSW (there is a side lane marked for motorcyclists to bypass the toll. If you are heading up by 2nd Link, you need to get it at the first toll station. There will be a counter before the entrance of the toll station. If the counter is unmanned, go to the last toll booth and there should be a person there selling the card. After that, the next toll you have to pay would probably be the one for Penang bridge already.

- best overnight stopover (if riding full day is too tough), I just need a simple A/C room

Ipoh would be a good place to stop if you really can't make it up. But it's just a couple hundred more kms so maybe you can tahan?

- best emergency number/service (if things go wrong)

No recommendations for this, sorry!
