Hi guys,

Any advise on should I purchase an new or used bike?

I'm looking at cbf150. Daily use for work.

I'm working, paying installment for new bike should not be a problem, saw some biker recommended newbie to purchase used bike to gain road experience. My only concern for used bike is I don't know how to check the condition of the bike.

Hmmm... I need to know ur budget n long term plan first. Long term plan means whether to upgrade to class 2 bike in the future. Cheers.

I will recommend you to get a 2nd hand bike for your first bike. There are several reasons.

1) there is a high chance you will drop your bike, as you are a newbie. so might as well get a 2nd hand so even u drop it u wont feel so bad as it is cheaper

2) you have no experience riding on the real road, so you may encounter problem some common biking problems like heavy rain have to stop and wait for the rain. Hot sun during the early afternoon. Smell of exhaust from cars and other bikes. after u start riding u might not like it at all, and might want to quit riding, selling a 1st hand bike will loose more money than a used bike.

3) Or you might like riding very much after your first experience riding on the road and might want to upgrade to higher CC bikes and got hook on to it. like my previous point, if you were to upgrade, selling a used bike lose less money then a brand new 1.

if you scare of get chop, go read some bikes information or ask a friend to come along with you. I advise you not to buy 2nd hand bikes from shop as most likely you can get the same bike at a cheaper price from someone else selling in this forum

I don't intend to upgrade at the moment, able to fork out 2-3k, the rest will have to depend on instalment.

Thanks for the recommendations. I did saw a guide for newbie in phantom knight section, but unfamiliar with many terms/parts listed. will have to slowly google and learn it.

I got a used CBF150, it is 3.5 years old. Got it for just 3 months

cool, what color is your bike ? how much did you pay for ?

btw, when you purchase a 2nd bike, you have to get insurance yourself before you can ride or it can be transfer from seller to buyer ?

Hmmm ok, if that's the case i would recommend buy new bike or 1-2 years old bike. The reasons are:

1. U r newbie to bike. If buy older bikes chances of getting carrot or bad bike are high coz u not sure how to check, unless u bring friend who knows about bike along.

2. U dun hav any plan to upgrade at the moment. So, newer bike should b good for u coz u will ride for long term.

Anyway, Cbf150 is a good choice, practical, low fuel consumption n low cost maintenence. To me, depreciation value for class 2b bikes are not as high as class 2a n 2. Even if u buy new one n sell it after few years, u will not lose much, provided u buy popular models, like cbf, wave, lc135 etc.

Dun worry about dropping new bikes. Even if u buy used bike n drop it, u oso feel heart pain coz it's ur first bike. So to me no difference. :cheeky:

I suggest buy used bike for class 2b.

1. U can ask the seller to meet you at planet motor and ask ah chong to help you see. I did mine on my previous super4 and it free of charge.

2. If not, bring along an experienced friend to help you check.

Hope this helps.

Red color, 2.8k. The insurance cannot be transferred , but it is not that expensive for this bike.

Wow that's good price, I saw other 3-4 years bike cost 3.1-3.5

Btw if I got my 2b in 09 but didn't purchase a bike, does it consider 3 years exp??

You just tell the seller that you let ur mech check before you purchase his bike. There wont be any problem if his bike is good.

Just give Chong a call. He is very helpful.

That will be really great, having a professional mech to check.

I have two questions in mind, hope you guys can help

1) can the mileage meter be reset? If yes, when and why? Any indication it's reset before??

2) when seller said "servic engine recently" it's normal maintenance? Or it's actually not a good sign?

Posted
Haha, you know him too??

Planet motor is well known for their good and cheap servicing. I think most of the bikers in sg will know this funny Ah Chong.

I think it can be reset. Im not sure if it is legal to do so. Maybe you can check with ah chong.

Service engine probabily meant he change engine oil or he have done a overhaul. You must check with the seller.

1. mileage by right shouldn't be reset by anyone. if reset, there's a sign of being tampered. u can check with the mechanic.

2. this one ask the seller for more info.
