Yes of course. Any kind of bumps, knocks, drops will affect the helmet overall effectiveness.

The manufacturers usually put 5 years as a end of life for helmets.

The plastics and foam will degenerate over time, and may be faster depending on the care of the helmet.

If the helmet has any hard knocks or drops, you can do a visual inspection for any cracks but sometimes the cracks/ fractures is not visible and will affect the integrity of the shell.

Well, helmets costs a tiny fraction of the motorcycle so i dont really understand why people scrimps on helmets. ("What?! $400 for a helmet?!" - when they just paid 7K for the motorcycle. Then they opt for the pointless, cheap as crap $30 open face.)

Personal preference, but do pay more for things that really matter.

I use school helmets because I do not see helmets that weigh as heavy for the price but I change them about 2 months 1 when the visor gets scratched or when it gets dirty.

I keep my old helmets even though they do not cost much because it holds memories. Weird? Maybe. But I do not wear them but just keep them.

The general consensus is if you've dropped your helmet with your head in it on the ground, the helmet has served its purpose. Then the helmet is done, time to chuck it away as its protection for a second drop with your head in it is compromised from the first impact.

But if you've dropped it say while holding it, it should be able to be used still. Of course unless as mentioned, there are fine cracks in it due to the surface on which the helmet is dropped.

Helmet life span is new to me because after a couple of years, my once tight fitting helmet sponges has flattened, now it's abit loose. Lol.

Btw, would you all recommended buying helmets in particular from lab?

Store room. Space is scarce in SG.

True. Most people buy from there probably because they get to bargain the prices seeing that the helmets are the same as most other shops. Of course not those branded ones.

Yea I know lab carries lots of fake stuff. And I know that the helmet covers the head which is essential to us being alive.. But I just can't bring myself to burn $700 for a helmet.

But please know where I'm coming from, I won't buy a psb approved $50 helmet but I will invest in a $200 FF DOT/or it's equivalent, approved helmet.

My concern is, both these helmets, if they roll under a cars wheel, will still be squashed anyway.

So... I'm wondering. How many here would be ready to pay the $500 difference perhaps just for extra comfort and fit or whatever reason u paid that much for that price range helmet?

Totally agree on this

I've seen many super bike riders wearing short, slippers and no brand helmet on the road.

The bikes cost easily 20-50k, but the protection equipment total up not even $100 LOL

Personally, I don't think the price nor brand of helmet matters.

As long as the helmet is dot-approved/PSB-approved, it doesn't matter whether the helmet costs $10, $100, $1000, or whether the helmet is L.A.B or Arai. They are equally capable of protecting you from the same amount of impact.

What matter more would be the helmet type - open-face vs flip-up vs full-face.

Why pay a few hundred dollars for an Arai open-face helmet, if it is not going to protect your head completely? You will be better off with a $120 full-face helmet.

Personally, I will use a helmet as my main helmet for around 2 years before replacing it with a new one. The old helmet I will keep as spare.

I concur. Tell that to those wearing Arai helmets. Open-face that is.
