Hello guys as the title above asked, how often should i start my bike? right now im on crutches and cast because of a recent surgery due to torn ligament, i am not able to ride for the time being, but i would like to ask how often i should start the bike so the battery doesnt die off? and how long should i start it for? do i have to give it some gas? or just leave it idle??

Very subjective, if you plan not to ride for some time, best is to dismantle the battery out and store it at home.

Test it with a volt meter, should you plan to come back and ride, if the battery has more than 12V, you are good to go, any thing below 12V, get it charge first.

Most Importantly, fill up your gas tank, and top up your Engine oil to Upper side and run it 5-10min on idle, before you remove the battery, grease the chain and get it covered for long storage.

Good idea....

but for my scenario was my battery was ok ....same thing i only start the bike ...let it run idle for 5 to 10mins and turn off. And due to bike its not on the move when idle ...rectrifier was affected...no choice have to change that item..cost around 60 SGD...riding a CB4 back then....

ah. i realised my battery died when i went down just now. i decided to just get it covered up after greasing the chains and oiling the clutches and fork to prevent rusts. i will push start it when i recover and get the whole battery changed. it has been over a year and its not retraining its charge.

Was the cause of the damaged rectifier due to the bike not ridden?

That was what i've been told by the mechanic...in general speaking battery and rectrifier works hand in hand. When its not ridden the rectrifier dried up as well(dead). Thats when bike cant start in the end after 6 months of just warming up the engine.

Sorry if my explaination not so exact as what you might expect...

But if were to think again many used bikes in bike shops which were display there for months and still can start thou.. I doubt they will warm up the engine of every bike.

it is always good to disconnect your battery if you are going to leave it there for a long period of time. if you have battery charger then it is even better to just bring the battery home. check the battery from time to time and if the charge is low you can charge it anytime.

I tried 5 days without touching due to falling ill and this is what I observed at the end of 5 days (batt still connected, park in open carpark with bike cover, no rain):

- bike start normally

- dirty from dust, especially on rear mirrors

- clutch plate cover area some oil stain from oil vapour. It's not leak, just that you see the cover gets dirty from oil vapour stains or from somewhere else

- tire level, no problem, but I did a charge just before the beginning of 5 days

In short, for 5 days your bike will get dirty, either from dust or stains from engine. Otherwise, not much of a issue. Longer than that, be careful of anything with liquids, such as engine, oil tank.

If you need to park long term I suggest you find an underground carpark or somewhere with a roof over. At least can ward off from elements like rain and sunshine. Cover it, it's a must, to ward off attention and other shits.

My bike 250cc. To be honest I not scare batt drain off cos I got 3-pin batt charger for bikes and cars, the one got from limbatt. Batt low? Take it out and charge, so never bother to disconnect batt. I more scare is IU batt drain off and cannot hold charge anyone.

Cover is a must. I scare bird ****.
