"RED MIST" Is a Term used to describe the

State of Mind of Riders who...

Are So determined to Acheive some Objective -

Catching a Vehicle infront,

Getting to a Location in the Shortest Possible Time...

The Rider Overtakes other vehicles

As they no longer capable of realistically

Assessing Riding Risk.

They had become Emotionally & Physiologically...

...Involved In The Chase!

Red Mist can Effect all road Users.

Riders in the Emergency Services need to be

Particularly aware of the problem.

Eg. Fire fighters, Medic on Quick Despatch, Traffic Policemen.

As for the Everyday road users...

A Particular road user may had touched a nerve...

Cross your Path...

And u Just wanna Show your Displeasure by Chasing Him...

Getting Even... Let It Pass... It's Not Worth It...

Don't Take it Personal...

Every Dog Has It's Day...

So... Be Cool! Your Life May Depends on It!

To Prevent Red Mist

Riders need to be able to maintain their usual Calm.

The Key Is to Concentrate on the Riding Task In Hand.

It is sometime so strange

Not to be late for an Important Appointment(sometime not that important)

Can get us into a Mad Rush to reach the Destination.

Advise: Better Late Than Never.

Better Advise: Leave 15 Mins Earlier.

(it may change your style)

To Our Man In Blue(or White):

Avoid Personalizing the Conflict with the Road User you

Are Pursuing.

As for Riders Involve in Rescue Operations...

You are No use to the people that needs help if u yourself

is involved in a accident.

We are all vulnerable to "Red Mist" at one time or another.

Realising that there is such a thing known as Red Mist, by itself, is already climbing one step up the safety ladder.

It is like having self-consciousness. Before that, you don't understand why you act the way you do sometimes. Then, you realised that there is such a thing as Anger.

One may think that I am a mature rider; I have ridden for over 5 years; My bike is not fast; I am not a Traffic Police or an ambulance or a doctor. So I am unlikely to be caught in Red Mist.

You will be surprised.

Even though I have tried to guard against Red Mist for over 8 years, there was one time when I suddenly realised that I was riding with my head clouded in Red Mist. And you know what was I rushing for?

Not to save a life or to meet the president. I was looking forward to my basketball game!

It may seemed ridiculous that I am caught in a Red Mist over a silly basketball game.

It's even more ridiculous when you realised that every day, thousands of riders and drivers are caught in Red Mist, as they rush from home to work and rush from work to home.

Consider the 5 min or less saved from rushing home. What would the rider be doing once he reached home? Watched an extra 5 min of television? Is it worth it for increasing his risk exposure drastically by riding in Red Mist just to get that extra 5 min?

1 - Move the bike away from the injured party (risk of fire)

2 - Do not allow anyone to smoke at the accident scene (risk of fire)

3 - Do not remove the riders helmet (risk of head injury)

4 - If needed, call or request someone to call emergency services

5 - If the rider is conscious, speak to them calmly and keep them conscious

6 - If the rider is able to move, then move them to the side of the road

7 - If others turn up, get them divert/warn cars of the accident scene until authorities arrive.

Attend 1st aid training

If you do not have 1st Aid Training, then better not apply first aid, otherwise you may make things worse.

For instance, someone bleeding badly, you need to stop the flow of blood. In 1st aid training, they tell you how to do this using pressure points, and applying pads without causing further internal complications.

If you faint at the sight of blood, then help direct the traffic.

BLIND SPOTS

How to Be Assured that U are

Not Riding in the Driver/Rider's

Blind Spot!

Have A Look @ Either of his/her

Side Mirrors...

If u See The Driver/Rider's Face

He Can See U!

Don't Get Me Wrong...

Staring into Mirrors is UnSafe...

(no matter how good lookin the driver is)

Just when ever u have a doubt

As to Whether u are in the Driver's Blink Spot.

Just have a Glance into his Mirrors!

You need to be aware of the social influences on

Attitudeand Safety but, in the end, the responsibility for the

Safety on yourself and others in the team is yours alone.

It is particularly important to be aware of your Individual

Responsibility for safety when riding in a group.

You Alone Can assess when it is safe to make a move

eg. to overtake and at what speed u should ride.

Riding in A Group Is Fun.

The Support is also Important...

That is Anyone In the Group may have a Problem...

Mechanical breakdown... Getting lost, Etc.

The Group is their to Help.

But Before u Ride with a Group.

Do find out the Style of Riding

You should want to Fit Comfortably with The Rest of the Team.

From my personal experience...

There are 3 Main Groups.

(Classified Mainly by their spd)

Superbikes

Cruisers

2B Bikes

Some Riding Teams will Accomodate all 3 Gps.

But then... They will be riding in their respective catagory.

And Meet at the Designated Rest Point. Eg. Machap R & R.

Or

"OTOT" Own-time-own-target.

A Term more familiar to the Army Guys.

Which is to mean...

Go At your Own Pace & Meet at the Next Designated Rest Point.

To be In Your Comfort Zone...

Means to Choose the Spd/style that is most enjoyable

& Safe to You.

It is Important!

Do Not Rush to Overtake

To Keep up with the Rest of the Bike.

Assess the Situation before making a Move.

Remember! When U Feel It Is Not Safe.. It's NOT!

There is Usually a Sweeper(last bike) that will make

Sure u are not left behind.

And the Leader will usually be keeping an eye

on the rest of the Bikes

Cos he knows it take time & effort to overtake.

On the Other hand...

Do not Be so safe & slow that u inconvenient

the group.

It is a common feeling by many riders riding in a convoy to feel "pai seh" (embarressed) to want to make an unplanned stop.

Sometimes, it could be you feel sleepy. But you feel pai seh to stop. So you try to ride on.

Sometimes, it could be something nagging wrong in your bike. But you feel pai seh to stop. So you try to ride with your mind clouded.

It is also a common feeling that one might feel pai seh if cannot keep up with the group. Feel pai seh to slow down the group. So one just try to ride on even though it is a speed faster than you are comfortable with riding.

But one is also pai seh to go and tell the leader to "Please slow down. It's too fast for me." Feel pai seh that you are the only one who think so and nobody else in the group thinks it's too fast.

All of the above are natural and common feeling. I felt like that before. But they are not necessarily the right way.

Do what Spectrum suggest. Ride within your comfort zone. The convoy will wait for you.

Generally, the Leader would feel the pace of the Team.

And Agreed spd will be the 1st marker.

If the Team becomes too spread out...

That's probably the Leader is too fast.

So he would slow down..

IF everyone is bunching up...

Leader is probably too slow... Ha ha...

After the 1st Break...

The leader/sweeper would be able to gauge

the Riding ability of

the each team member...

Especially the Newbies...

A chat amoung the team would soon get the

General pace of the team settled down.

:thumb:

As for the any of the above.. pai seh stuff...

Just indicate the last bike your problem.

Eg. Point to your problem.

No Fuel(point to tank), Toilet.. pt u know where,

Hungry... pt stomach. Drink water... pt to mouth..

Really quite simple.

He will probably stop with u.

(Or he sure u are experience enough to

Catch up & Know the way...

Then he may ride on.)

He is the Last Bike... There will be None other behind Him.

If it is just to Adjust something...

(take a Quick Pic... wear a rain coat... sunglasses)

Just wave The last bike to go on...

Meaning u will catch up with him after your adjustment.

Fatique Causes Accidents....

All u need is to Close your eyelids for a few sec...

...*^%#....

Was on my way back from KL...

Nice satay lunch @ Kajang...

After an hr on the North-South Highway...

Me start to feel sleepy....

The next thing I see was...

(the driver infront of me beat me to it..)

The Car infront of me starts to sway...

And Brushes the Concrete Barrier on the left of the highway!

Slight damage to the side of the car....

Wobble, wobble and he stopped to check the slight damage.

Now... It will not be a slight damage with a

Biker dozing off...

So remember...

Rest when u are tired....

40 winks will help.

Or..
