I'm interested in trying out the walk from chestnut avenue to lower pierce reservoir. Any experienced guides out there?

'Conserving Pulau Ubin' and 'What is habitat fragmentation?'

Dear all, These two interesting talks will be held next week by

Nature Society. Don't miss these unique opportunities to learn more

about our remaining wild places and what we can do for them.

14 Jan (Wed): Slidetalk 'What is habitat fragmentation?'

-------------------------------------------------------

Time: 7.30pm at the Nature Society (Singapore) Office

510 Geylang Road #02-05 The Sunflower.

Next to the outright disappearance of habitats, the fragmentation of

existing habitats into isolated parcels may well be the most

significant threat to species diversity. What is habitat

fragmentation and what are its effects on biodiversity? Is there a

way around the problem? Shawn Lum will discuss these as well as look

at a paper published recently in the prestigious science journal

Nature, "Catastrophic Extinctions follow deforestation in Singapore"

co-authored by NUS professors Navjot Sodhi and Peter Ng concerning

habitat fragmentation in Southeast Asia.

15 Jan (Thu): Slidetalk `Conserving Pulau Ubin'

Time: 7pm at the Nature Society (Singapore) Office

510 Geylang Road #02-05 The Sunflower.

The talk by Lim Kim Seng is based on an MSc study of Pulau Ubin's

potential for sustainable, community-based biodiversity conservation.

In the last two decades, numerous changes have occurred on this

island. New stakeholders have settled in, development speeded up,

roads paved, fences erected, prime habitats destroyed and local

residents resettled, adversely affecting the biological, aesthetic

and cultural appeal of the island. Adding to the ecological impacts

on the island are the weekend visitors flocking there to enjoy its

rustic ambience and recreation opportunities. Covering also the

island's biodiversity in general, the talk will focus on the

identification of biodiversity hotspots, their conservation merits,

potential buffer zones and corridors, the use of zoning for

minimising the impacts of recreational visitors and recommendations

for empowering the local community in a bid to achieve sustainable

development for Pulau Ubin.

The Woodcutter's Trail is a rather tough trail for mountain biking. The trail is now strewn with plenty of fallen trees so you can expect plenty of stops.

The trail head starts from Meeting Point 4 after Chestnut Avenue. Near the top of the mountain biking trail, heading eastwards, you will emerge at Upper Pierce Reservoir after 3 hours of brisk walking.

No detailed map exist for the area for it would be unwise to publicise the location to would-be animal/bird trappers. Hope this helps.

I walk almost the same as TS.. 8 years :o

Macritchie carpark to Rifle Range rd.. in the middle of the night only. 3 hours was our fastest with a 15-30min break at jelutong tower.

Haven't tried woodcutter.. but my friends were caught there by NEA before ( mountain biking ).
