G'Day,

Im in the mist of fixing my Rectifier/Regulator to my bike.

It connects to the `female' connector to the alternator.

My problem is that the alternator wire r rusted and beyond help.

Thinking that i need to cut and redo the connectors..a few question in mind.

1)the length will be short thus i need to make an extension connector between the regulator/rectifier and the alternator wires.

q. can any household wire do?if not where can i get my supply of motor cycle wire and common connectors here in sg

2) the regulator wire and alternator wire are yellow.what spec colour code is that?

i can go to the shop to get it sorted...but its good to know.

1. Practically any kind of wire will do as you are only talking about 12 volts. Use copper as it has the lowest resistance (unless you can afford heavy gauge gold wires :) ). Stranded will be better than solid for this application. You do need to make sure you use a heavy enough wire.

You need to know either the amps the alternator puts out or the watts/12. If you don't know, then tell us the model and year of bike you have and I am sure someone will know. Then use this simple chart to choose the correct wire thickness/gauge.

Gauge Amps

14 15

12 20

10 30

8 40

6 65

4 85

2) Yellow is a nice color. Doesn't mean anything. High current cables like alternator and battery cables are often red but it really doesn't matter.

3) It would be best to completely replace the wire between alternator and rectifier and not just add in a new piece to make it long enough.

4) You will need to put end connectors onto your wire unless you have screw type terminals on alternator and rectifier. These need to be strongly crimped, and preferably soldered as well to avoid corrosion and loosening problems in the future.

Thank you Strong Eagle,

I ride a Ducati Monster M900.

My plan is to cut off the damaged / corroded end of the wire (about 20mm that ends at the female end connector). Then join by soldering new wire which will extend to the right lenght.

wish me luck.

Biting on the fray of my hair, I muse upon the way to find the oasis of evermore beyond the vertical horizon, I shall join the windupdeads in owl city, neither my safetysuit nor my red jumpsuit apparatus can save me, cuz I mistook a death cab for cutie in plain white T's...

hmm .. wud like to add..

actually .. the type of wires with the highest conductivity is silver .. second is copper..

and yellow is juz another color for red which is the color code for positive if i m not wrong

black/brown/green is confirm the color code for earth or negative.. this i m sure

:)
