Hi guys, just got my 2A and very much interested in gsr400. Kindly help me with some queries, please.

I'd like to know a little about maintenance cost like how much is voltage rectifier replacement, oil filter, normal (not high end) tires, etc. where to go for good sevicing?

Also, best place to go and look for some used ones.

Thanks!

Why is the rectifier part of maintenance? I rode the bike for 5 yrs and never had a problem. It shouldn't give any problems as its located below the radiator, lots of air flow. If the battery is more than 3 yrs old.. then u should change it out (FURUKAWA FTX9-BS).. should cost about 60 bucks..

Oil filter is about 16 bucks(i prefer to use suzuki oil filters), engine oil is 3.2L without oil filter change/3.4L with oil filter change.. so cost is obviously dependent on what kind of oil u use (i use motul 300V 10w40.. about $110+ with oil filter change, done at unique motorsports) i change my oil and oil filter every 3k.. my personal habit.. oil is something u shouldn't save on..

Tyres r 120 front and 180 rear.. so for example michelin pilot road 2 will set u back about 400 bucks.. once again.. tyres are also something u shouldn't save on. Engine oil change can be done anywhere as long as they have the type of oil u want.. its an extremely easy bike to work with.. just make sure the mechanic puts in the correct amount of oil... and tightens all the necessary nuts and bolts he has touched.

U can try Looi's motor.. they have lotsa used GSRs...

Dnickyb,

Thank you for your comprehensive response. I currently ride Roadwin and in the last 3.5 years I've changed rectifier twice which costs 85$ each time, and when it gives so does the battery! Good to hear that gsr is tougher.

Rectifier is part of maintenance. The bike's electrical health is largely dependent on the battery and the rectifier, hence installing a voltmeter is good as it can measure the voltage output of the bike and detect any spikes or drops in voltage which could indicate status of the electrical health.

Furukawa no longer produces batteries for the GSR 400. So the battery to look for these days is the Yuasa YTX9-BS, KS motors do sell them for bout $40 to $50 odd.

The rectifier can be gotten at the same place for $185. A faulty rectifier can still work but it may lead to long term damages to your generator and your wiring harness as its main function is to convert A/C to D/C.

Suzuki Oil filters can be gotten from KS motors at $12 each and the reason why you use the OEM filters is that it uses Suzuki's proprietary screw thread.

Just follow manual's recommendations in changing oil, at every 5k. Use any fully synthetic brands that you are comfortable with and the Oil filter can be changed every alternate oil change and that's being conservative! The manual states oil filter change at every 18k and oil change at every 6k.

Them spark plugs can last for about a year or 30k or so mileage though the manual states at every 12k. The copper spark plug model is NGK CR8EK and the Iridium ones are NGK CR8EIX, iridium can last twice the lifetime of copper sparkies. Copper ones should cost no less than $9 and iridium ones to be less than $15 each.

Air filter should be replaced every 18k or when it is dirty. Aftermarket ones should be cleaned more often, at about 10k or so due to larger air intakes.

Coolant should be replaced every 2 years and topped up every now and then, preferably at 10k.

The idling should be set to 1.3k and be adjusted in the event of any deviations.

Brake pads should be replaced when its worn out, either by checking periodically or when there is screeching sound during braking.

Your drive train, i.e Chain should be well maintained by CLEANING and LUBRICATING with appropriate cleaner and lubricant. Lubrication without cleaning is akin to painting on dirty surfaces, useless. The recommended cleaner would be kerosene.

Tyres, go for touring types. Racing tyres are soft and have great grips but wears out too fast unless you can afford the frequent tyre changes. Touring tyres have best of both worlds. Do not ever go for IRC or Shinko or any cheap tyres, you are asking for trouble.

For these 3 serviceable components, an old adage plays a part here, "Penny wise, pound foolish". To save that few dollars by getting cheaper components, you are putting yourself and any pillion at risk.

Tyres are your only form of contact between road surfaces, anything happens to them will happen to you real bad.

Brakes, well, duh! If you can't stop in time, you'll be in a world o' hurt.

Final drive, it is the only component that connects your engine to your rear wheel. If it doesn't work, your bike ain't moving. A snapped chain at speed is a weapon, one that can cause you to flip over when riding.

Before you ask, KS Motors is located at,

Address: 127 Jalan Besar, Singapore 208845. Contact is +65-62949316

Tighten your nuts and bolts smartly, over-torquing anything is plain dumb. If possible, try to DIY. Its cheap, saves you tons of money and you get to learn more about the bike.

For example, a DIY EO change will set me back about $62. 3.4L of EO and one OEM oil filter. A set of 4 iridium spark plugs will cost me $44 bucks. Air filter cleaning is cheap, only need to buy the cleaning kit. Brake fluid cost bout $6, bleeding work is simple and free.

Treat your bike well and it'll not give you any trouble. Treat it like dirt, you should not expect gold.

Lexanez,

Thanks a lot! I am taking everyone's advice here seriously.

You gave me very good info regarding spare parts. I also don't intend to use racing tires but wouldn't want the cheap ones as well. I can change the sparks and air filter and do simple maintenance. I can also do oil change if possible but the problem there is where to throw the oil?

I know it will be a lot more expensive but I also want a repair shop I can trust where people really know what they are doing and wouldn't con me. For my current daelim bike, they have two shops, one in Kaki Bukit and the other in Bukit Batok. Though my work is closer to Bukit Batok I prefer going to kaki bukit because the mechanic in bukit batok is not trustworthy. Any recommended repair shop for suzuki?

Any motor repair shops, most of them would have a oil dump. Put the used oil back into your EO bottles and dispose of them accordingly.

Would definitely recommend Planet Motors for most jobs. Located at 3007 Ubi Road 1.

Hi Guys,

Recently changed job... wanted to install rear/top box on my GSR400.

Any idea where can i get it done? Roughly how much?

Thanks in advance...

First of all, which box do you want? There are many to choose from such as Coocase, GIVI, Kappa, Hepco & Becker, Trax and others. Models ranging from black plastic to brushed aluminium.

You can even DIY your own. Baskets, huge fruit crates, large biscuit tins, old ammo boxes or whatever.

I would say Range from 200+ to 600+. For those known brands. If wan nice and stylo, won't be cheap. If wan cheap, cannot complain about quality and outlook.

Hi Guys, I have just recently bought a 2nd hand GSR 400. I have this problem, at times when I am slowing down towards a traffic junction. My engine will stall. Anyone experience this problem?

Your issue can be solved by adjusting the idling. I would suspect that the idling is set too low. Idling should be between 1.1k to 1.3k rpm, as of manufacturer's recommendation.

I have checked that my idling is at 1.1k to 1.3k rpm. Could there be any other possibilities? One more thing, where can I buy a stock pillion hand grip bar? Mine comes with the box bracket when I purchased and the previous owner does not have the stock Pillion grip bar.

Could it be Spark Plug issue? Or manybe Throttle Body no longer in sync? Just guessing as not much info to play around with. Another thing that you can take notice that when you are slowing down, maybe can check the rpm meter to see where it is at (under 1k rpm??). Affect on all gears? Is yours equip with Air-Fuel Controller like PCIII? If yes, maybe time to retune? If stock, (touch wood), dun wan to think ECU faulty?

Ohhh could it be clutch control issue? Clutch-in gap too far? OK I have finish my babbling hahahah.
