I don't know how you classify short trip? Maybe a day trip? A trip to KL is consider short. A long trip to me is at least 3 weeks up northern Thailand. That's long to me.

Well can always save for 1 year and combine 2 years of leave into 1 big long trip. That's what I did in order to go....
