Hi all, For anyone who is interested in motorcycling in China.. Hope you will find this thread useful. http://www.mychinamoto.com/forums/forum.php Cheers

Thats very true also, the only way to lower the cost is to get a few more participants..however, that will make the trip more complicated ... Think about it, if you are interested - we can really turn it into a reality..... I'm always very interested to drive up to shangri la... I did a posting on mycarforum some time back..with details of the driving plan.. Plus map, infos on the road from boten up to shangri la.. http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?showtopic=2666824 It's a once a lifetime experience...it's not easy for me to find someone who is interested to drive, ride up to shangri la...I think it's also equally difficult for you to come across another person with similar interest as yours... : ) Think about it mates : )
-
anytime mates.. you are planning to ride all the way up there ? if so, do you mind me coming along ? i can come in my SUV...we can share the cost of the guide.. the guide can go in my car and my car can carry extra luggage n spare parts for you and your motorbike... : ) i love to go motorbike, but i dont think im experienced enough for that at the moment.. but driving - shouldnt be a problem..

Sori for the double posting...using iPad... Not very friendly with some functions when posting ..... The above was the reply I got when I wrote to this company that provide "guide" , documentation works if you have the interest to drive, ride into china... The cost for bike might be different , but guess it should be around these regions also...

I will be in chengdu this coming October...will like to check up some motorcycle shops. To check the feasibility of renting , buying a motorbike there....that might be a easy way to ride in china..
-
Hi mates.. Same .. You will still need a local guide to "accompany" you on the whole trip...it's a real put off to adventurers who wanted to drive / ride into china... Few years back, there was this singapore couple who drive their hyundai matrix around the world...they drove intomalaysia and then shipped their car into India, bypassing china...guess the cost was really prohibitive ... http://www.relax.com.sg/relax/features/385936/Driving_into_the_unknown.html

The last time when i planned the drive up, the route is as followed : Singapore - Chiang Khong 2500km Chiang Khong - Luang Namtha 264km Luang Namtha to Mohan - 58km Mohan to Shangri La - 1400km Shangri La to Mohan - 1400km Mohan to Vientiane - 650km Vientiane - Bangkok - 650km Bangkok - SG - 1800km Total will probably be around 9,000km There was a group of BMW rider rode to Shangri La last year.. What they do is they ride up to Haytai, send the bike on rail to ChiangMai, Ride into Laos and then into Shangri La.. Wayback, they send their bike from Li Jiang to KunMing.. and then ride back from Kunming into Laos..if i didnt recalled wrongly..

Hi mates.. I know which route you will be going.. I had planned to drive up to Shangri La - but failed to materialised.. It will take at least 3 - 4 weeks for the whole trip... Yes.. A guide is compulsory... The last round when i check for 2 vehicles.. i was quoted around USD5,000... the guide will meet you at Laos/China borders of Boten/Mohan... He will do up all the documentations for you.. and he will accompany you along the trip.. you have to pay for his lodging and foods... I been to Shangri La twice... A beautiful place..always wanted to drive up there.. but failed to find enough travellers to come along.. One alternative is actually to rent / buy a motorcycle from Kun Ming , ride up to Da Li, Li Jiang and up to Shangri La... Riding own bike is nice..I'm still doing my class2b, hopefully can get my license by end of this year.. May i know what bike are you riding ? Any recommendation for 2b bikes that are suitable for touring ? Cheers

im doing my class 2b at SSDC.. im now at lesson 6 (total 7 lessons).. im 40 this year. i will say im a slow learner.. i did my lesson 1 for 4 times, lesson 2 for 3 times (i think so..haha)... now lesson 6 is on test routes - i can say im riding pretty confidently on the road... when i look back, i just keep wondering how come i need so many repeat lessons on such simple things like shifting of gears etc etc.. haha.. but it doesnt really matter actually, the more lessons you go, the better your foundations will be.. i rather go for more repeat on my lessons and hopefully pass the TP test on one go than cleared various stage quickly and failed TP test numerous time.. : )
