acknowledging is not enough, the "spirit" need to declare and enthrone Him as the King of kings and the Lord of lords and obey the Lord cause even the demons know and acknowledge Jesus is God but they dnt obey God nor they declare Him as the Lord of their lives.

A 'signal of hope'

VATICAN CITY - A RABBI who became the first Jew to address a synod of Catholic bishops on Monday said his presence sent a 'signal of hope' after a history of 'blood and tears' between Christians and Jews.

 

'I deeply feel that standing here before you is very meaningful,' the Grand Rabbi of Haifa Shear-Yashuv Cohen told the 253 bishops.

 

'It brings with it a signal of hope and a message of love, co-existence and peace for our generation, and for generations to come.'

 

Rabbi Cohen, who is co-president of a commission for dialogue between the Vatican and Israel, added: 'There is a long, hard and painful history of the relationship between our people, our faith and the Catholic Church leadership and followers, a history of blood and tears.'

 

The history of Christian persecution of Jews, including genocide, exile, pogroms, crusades and discrimination, goes back 2,000 years.

 

The Catholic Church laid the foundation for reconciliation between the two faiths during the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s which proclaimed the common 'spiritual heritage' of Jews and Christians.

 

The rapprochement accelerated under Pope Benedict XVI's predecessor John Paul II, the first pope to pay an official visit to a synagogue, formally recognise Israel and make an official trip to the Jewish state.

 

Pope John Paul II also was the first to pray at the Auschwitz death camp in his native Poland and to formally repent for the Catholic Church's failure to adequately recognise and react to the Holocaust.

 

Pope Benedict XVI has continued the conciliatory steps taken by Pope John Paul II to improve inter-faith relations, but has sometimes stumbled.

 

Most recently he allowed the reintroduction of a controversial Good Friday prayer calling for the conversion of Jews.

 

However in April the German-born pontiff won some Jewish hearts and minds when he became the first leader of the Roman Catholic Church to visit a synagogue in the United States.

 

In his speech on Monday, Rabbi Cohen also voiced Israel's outrage over remarks by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the UN General Assembly last month, without naming him.

 

Israelis felt 'deep shock at the terrible and vicious words of the president of a certain state in the Middle East in his speech' before the UN, Rabbi Cohen said.

 

In the speech, Mr Ahmadinejad said Israel 'is on a definite slope to collapse and there is no way for it to get out of the cesspool created by itself and its supporters'. But he did not repeat previous comments that the Jewish state should be 'wiped off the map'.

 

Rabbi Cohen said: 'The false and malicious accusations, the threats and the anti-Semitic incitement have brought back to us the painful memory of the tragedy of our people, the victims of the Holocaust.' He added: 'We hope to get your help as religious leaders ... to protect, defend and save Israel ... from the hands of its enemies.'

 

Earlier on Monday, the bishops stressed the importance of dialogue with Jews and Muslims.

 

'Today, bearing in mind the tragic history of the relations between Israel and the Church, we are invited ... to repair any injustice committed against the Jews,' Quebec Archbishop Marc Ouellet told the bishops at the three-week gathering.

 

Archbishop Ouellet, serving as rapporteur for the synod, also said dialogue with Muslims 'is more important than ever in today's circumstances.' Muslims 'are allies in the defense of human life and in the assertion of the social importance of religion,' he said.

 

Relations with the Muslim world suffered a shock in 2006 when the pope appeared to link Islam with violence during an academic speech in his native Germany.

 

Pope Benedict XVI did much to repair the damage with a stunning conciliatory gesture during a visit to Turkey in November 2006 when he assumed an attitude of Muslim prayer in Istanbul's Blue Mosque.

 

The synod, the second such gathering to be presided over by the pope since his election in 2005, will discuss Christian fundamentalism and the relationship between religion and science as well as Judaism and Islam. -- AFP

praise Him for bringing my pre-believer friend last sat to my church miracle service. He 's the guy who attended our BS twice before. Hope by His grace he'll come to this sat BS. (The guy pic was in my previous signature).

 

Yesterday, i accidentally met my colleague at a foodcourt, and I told her about my church & also Jesus.

 

It's a joyful & wonderful experience each time we tell someone about Jesus, I can feels my faith growing each time I tells someone about Him.

 

And I am longing to go back to the Orphanage to tell the little fatherless children that Jesus loves them.

this week topic if its not suitable for pre-believer, means its also not suitable for those with weaker faith or new believers. I think its very important to have a respected person (pastor) to steer the discussion in the right frame of mind & context - so that those weaker faith will not be mislead that the christian faith is full of confusion & divisions ( catholics, protestants, methodists, presbyterian). For example, if we talks about John Wesley doctrine of justification vs John Calvin doctrine of election, we might want to talk about it on a neutral ground instead of taking strong stand in any one of them. Because such discussion is divisive & confusing to pre-believers & those weaker in faith.

 

But most of all, we must make final conclusion & everyone should agree & dwell in the essentials or common grounds - which is summed up in John 3:16. I also think MC's doctrine of Holy Spirit, doctrine of the sin, doctrine of the Father, doctrine of the Son; is all dwelling on common ground.

 

Apart from all those academic theological talks, any personal testimonies about how the holy Bible which is God's diary & His living words, can touch & change our lives will be extremely relevant to the day's topic. Plus also very impactful to any pre-believers or the ones with weaker faith.

the children might have parents, but they may hv heart breaking reasons why they dun live with them at all. Coz some are abandoned by their parent/s due to poverty & having too many children. Some of their parent in jail. Some parents are passed away & grandparents can't afford to feed them. I think they all have a broken family relationship some ways or another.

we do need someone to steer us but we must be careful of who to choose.

 

we dnt need to grab whoever tht comes our way or tht comes with a pastor title.

 

regarding the issue on whether the topic is suitable, y i said tht it might not be suitable is that there might be too much information for a pre-believer cause i believe its more impt for the pre-believer's salvation than for him/her to know all these but like i said previously, its still ur call whether to invite or not

 

frankly speaking, i dnt believe tht we can solve the "confusion or diversion" tht you've mentioned. reason being, if it cld have been solved, it wld have been done a long time ago.

 

i believe tht all these diversion were formed upon human intellect on explaining God's Word and if we try to use our intellect to "summarise" or take things on to a common grd, wldn't tht make it another diversion or confusion cause its another way of thinking from the rest of the denominations.

 

at the end of the day, is your faith on God or on how man explains God's Word?

 

Sharing testimonies is gd but sometimes gotta be sensitive to the surrounding and sometimes wat a person might feel encouraging might not really encourage anyone at all. haha, i know of a great example last time in my ex-church where the person sharing was totally off track.

I kinda agree with this statement. I feel that all of us are from different churches with different emphasis on teachings. There will be problems when "debates" arises.

 

Maybe it could be better to keep it to just fellowship instead of heavy bible study on doctrines.

 

Just my 2 cents.

WHY CALL IT BIBLE STUDY; if the teaching of the bible is masked of its importance? CHANGE TO FELLOWSHIP!!!

 

Bringing a non believer (Please restraint from calling them pre-believer cause bottomline, God had decided who He want to save, we are merely only his humble instruments) may be confusing to him/her at such a gathering. But if a time comes, he/she believes due to our out-reach; found out the truth(Bible teaching) later- we become deceiver that cos him/her to stray!!!! :angry:
