hi all,

a few (mainly 2) questions that i couldn't find through using search.

i intend to convert my foreign license to a singapore one - will i have to attach the probation plate for 12 months from date of issue?

i understand insurance is compulsory for owning/riding a bike - do insurance companies do short-term cover in singapore? and is it legal for to ride with such an arrangement?

i actually intend to buy a bike just for use twice a year (about 3-4 weeks max per trip) when i come home to visit my parents during CNY and qing ming. renting a car each time i go back is quite taxing...

i will be paying for my RS in full - can i arrange for insurance each time i fly in, perhaps for a month at a time and then let it lapse until i next return?

what is the minimum insurance coverage needed (if comprehensive is not necessary to ride)?

positive input appreciated, thanks!

hi all,

.

.

a few (mainly 2) questions that i couldn't find through using search.

well, if u cant search, read thru whole forum.. :D

yes, for 2B conversion, not sure about direct to class 2A, class 2 conversion... havent seen ang moh harley with P-plate though

insurance is annual fee, they dont give short-term (at least not that i know of) but u can always get refund the remaining amount if u want to cancel

there's some bike rental company for short term lease... do search again

you can apply lay-up at LTA for the time you are not here, but once u want to use again, u have to sent the bike for inspection of road worthiness, then again lay-up after usage. no need of insurance for lay-up.

so if u dont mind the process of

1.send for inspection

2.renew road tax

3.buy insurance

4.ride

5.apply lay-up

6.refund insurance

7.refund road-tax

(just my thought, correct me if i'm wrong)

3rd party

positive input appreciated, thanks!

Sorry...but when I converted my 2B, I asked the TP, and the answer is:

I don't need P plate on my bike...

and therefore I did not have my P plate on.... no prob with that on the road for the past years

btw it was in Ubi

When I converted my 2B and 3, the lady at the TP counter at CDC told me that I was required to put on P-Plates. That was in 2006.

well... maybe they made a mistake? or maybe because my license was like 6 years old before conversion?

I don't know... I was told so... *shrugs*

just follow the majority then... put a p plate to avoid any unnecessary conflicts/trouble

thanks for your input, kmax!

just to help me make up my mind... 2 more questions (anyone feel free to chime in)

can road tax be paid for and issued immediately?

how much does an inspection cost? (no fix cost, then roughly?)

i will probably compare that with the cost of road tax and convenience before making a decision.

i have a feeling it's not worth laying up if i come back twice a year... sigh! it's a fine city!

From what i know, road tax renewal is an instantaneous process. LTA will mail you the road tax disc itself. Then head down to an approved payment centre (post office,Vicom etc) for payment and to get it chopped ala customs style. Also, if im not mistaken, its possible to pay thru online means. But that is provided that insurance cover is up till the day the road tax is due. I found out the hard way and had to extend my insurance my a couple of days.

Inspection is a flat fee of $16.25 for the 1st attempt(can't remember, last inspection was in august 07) .

Subsequent attempts are $8.15 IIRC.

Unless your willing to fork out the $$$ and time for just a few days of riding, I suggest you take public transport, OR, subride a friends bike, and ride away when ever you come back.

cheers!
