Hi people,

as per thread title, wat are the possibilities.? (Other than deliberate arson)

Some months ago, my bike was BBQed a little.

I switch on the ignition as per norm. Head a 'piak' sound and within a sec, smoke came from under the tank where the bunch of bike wiring are.

Saw a small flame, burns for maybe 10 secs. Luckily, managed to fan the flame off after a while. But the main wiring is gone, set me back by a few hundred.

Till now, still puzzles me as to what the hell happened.

There's little clues after I sent my bike to the workshop that the:

1) Aftermarket Horns got no fuse

2) Only non-stock item are the 2 small pod lights.

3) Alarm was triggered when I on the bike cos i forgot to disarm it. The fire started when I on it the 2nd time. Branded Arm got fuse.

Anyone of you came across incidents such as this?

Thanks.

Have a pleasant Ride/ Day.

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

can be cause by sudden surge of current...

and there is nearby fuel for the sparks to ign a small flame..

basic rule to start a fire - fuel, air and spark/fire to ign..

maybe the insulation was harden or there is dry up black tape around contributed as "fuel"..

Ah Chong, Ah Chong...forgot what he said that time. Most probably some lame jokes.

:) :faint:

Anyway, nothing much he can do. The wire was burnt rather badly to render any repair/tracing efforts hopeless, but I was very lucky the small bbq fire didnt hit the fuel line.

old wiring tend to be patched up by electrical tape.

and electrical tape isnt very strong. it tends to unfold itself, especially when exposed by grease.

exposed wires either get crossed, or hit the frame, causing a short. usually results in a blown fuse. there are times when wires get crossed in a way that they bypass the fuse, and the wire gets so hot that it melts the plastic hose.
