Hey all!

Looking to get my liscence soon. And am looking at rxz or sp. I know this has been asked for years n years but i cant seem to find some info on it or some of it has been a long long time.

I would like to ask about the wear n tear of SP. Is it frequent? Are the parts more prone to wear off or spoil etc.. and overall whats the general review of SP. Is it worthwhile? , is it comfortable?, or is it those kind of bike ride 1 2 years cfm sian type. Haha. Or shud i juz get an rxz. But its so carrothead right now.. thanks alot for reading! Cheers

15 years ago i first got my 2b and rode a phantom150, the 2-stroke version with the same engine as the sp. and my 2 close pals rode the sp. it seems everywhere you look, ppl were on either the phantom150 or the sp, and a few RS125 or TZM150 or remnants of new(ish) RXZ. it was the 'climax' of the 2-stroke era and also, very very unfortunately, the beginning of the end.

i can tell you now, on a new or good condition sp, if you ever feel sian of it today, the only way to get a new kick is to up 2a. no brand new 4-stroke 2b bike you can buy today can hold a candle to that engine, by a significant margin. i dare say even some 2a four strokes today is only a little way ahead of the sp, but ahead of it nonetheless.

and there lies the problem. can you find a good condition sp?

after i upgraded to a class 2 a little more than 10 years ago, my phantom150 was handed to my dad. he is still riding ti today. my dad is an old man who only ever do the necessary maintenance. it runs, but its engine performance is a far cry from when i rode it. and when finally it came time for him to change the carb and other engine parts, finding spare parts in singapore was a b*tch. you can only find second hand spare parts, most of which are not really much better condition than the one in the bike for more than 10 years. i've heard of sp owners today who claim if you go jb you can find spare parts brand new out of the box, but are you willing to go that trouble? coz no matter how good condition the sp you find, if the previous owner(s) have never changed any of the internals recently, it is very likely during your ownership something inside gives way and you have to replace. nothing lasts forever and they are probably at least 12 years old.

and that is if you find a good condition one. if you find one that has not had anything other than simple maintenance, that engine is going to wheeze and cough with no more power than a 4-stroke 2b. thats how my old pantom is like today. which makes it a stupidly irrelevant purchase, unless you're a nostalgic collector with cash and time to spare on a project bike.

is it comfortable? depends. lots of people complain that the sportsbike posture is uncomfortable, but i (and there are plenty others like me), find the sportsbike posture to be most comfortable and most suitable for focussed riding. sportsbikes and sportsbike posture makes you focus on the road and your bike's ability, not the scenery around you.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

Hmm...I don't know if it's because I only started riding my friend's SP only after I got my 2A and started riding a DRZ. But I felt SP was very underpowered until you hit the correct powerband. Before that I never rode a 2T bike.

Had a pretty poor impression of small 2T's like the SP, because the power wasn't consistent and useful for a normal commuter like me. Nothing-nothing-nothing then suddenly POWAAAAA!!

ah yup..... fond memories of that :thumb: and dun forget that trail of smoke behind

you're right, dats exactly how a 2b 2-stroke engine behaves. by contrast, a 2b 4-stroke goes nothing-nothing-nothing and....... nothing.

and like i said, most, if not all, 2a 4-strokes are likely to beat the sp. but when you consider only the world of 2b, chasing that powerband and then feeling that aggression kick in and the accompanying engine wail, theres nothing else like it if you restrict yourself to just the world of 2b.

do the same on a modern class 2 sportsbike though, and your underwear will turn brown.

2 stroke are v much easy on the maintenance. Had a KR for 4 years, and my RS for 3 years and still rolling.

EO and 2T, thats all.

of course, other misc like chain, brake fluid/pad is required too

Worthwhile? What do you expect a 10-20 years old SP to worth?

SP will require u to lean forward as compared to a rxz, some may find it uncomfortable.

Sian? everyone will find it sian because there are 2a and class 2 bikes around.

the only diff i can think of is the insurance price. a sports bike will be more costly. and since its a used bike dont expect to be in tip top.
