Hey guys,

been reading this forum about the downtown 300i and even went down to the kymco agent to check out the scoot. looks pretty decent and all, and I'm not sure if this question was asked before, how does this scoot compare with others like the SW400 or the Sym Max 400?

Mainly I'm comparing these 3 scoots..

been to a few bike shops and most of them said not much difference, however i wanted to get an answer from ppl who are riding the downtown 300i to give me some feedback.. I'm aware of the engine specs of all these scoots and all, so i guess if someone who has maybe tried the SW 400 or maxsym 400 to compare to the downtown 300i would be good to maybe give me a better representation of the downtown..

thanks all..

First of all, I wouldn't group the DT300i the same group as the SW400 and MaxSYM400.

DT is meant for city riding, hence the name. It's much smaller than the other two options.

SW400 uses parallel twin too, so that means a much more "sportier&refined" performance.

MaxSYM400 is a cheaper alternative to the SW400 for those who see no point in spending so much money to get the new SW400.

DT300i is the cheapest in price here cos of the 299cc engine.

Compare the quality of the Kymco VS SYM VS Honda, and you can tell and notice a difference in the fittings, gaps, plastics quality used, etc.

The smaller size of the DT300i makes it good for cornering too. Very stable. The others, being physically larger, feels a little more clumsier in the corners [Physically speaking lah].

You may want to consider the Xciting 300Ri, or if you can wait till July/ August, the Xciting 400i. Full forks, dual front disc brakes, gives better cornering [as heard from a fellow DT300i and now Xciting 300Ri rider].

Between MaxSym and Downtown.

If you are looking for performance, go for Maxsym.

If you are looking for good after sales go for Downtown.

Oh yes, upon seeing my pics I notice the BMW grips. They are really good!

I rode for 2 hrs 50% top speed also no fatigue on my hands at all.

I rode my skipper for more than 1/2 hr my palms are already aching.

The shape plays a part in reducing fatigue to the palms/wrist significantly as the outer grip is larger and it helps to hold the throttle with only the last 2 fingers. Something like a throttle flap thingy.

BMW Grip :thumb: worth the mod + cut my palm.

Lol.

I think for long distance the seat and riding position will be more crucial than the handlebar grips??

All equally important. Vibration from the front wheel and the engine will be absorbed by your hand. When your hands are painful, you cant go any further either. Thats what those vibration absorbing bar ends are for too.

Especially Downtown seat and position sux big time for me, make my hamstring ache and I can't stretch forward.

Luckily i mod the handle bar, if not I don't know how long I'll last.

Can stretch out our legs what.

What I do is either rest my legs against the upper footrest, or else just stretch them out with no cars around lah obviously.

Haha.

Try that at 140km/h with a pillion. The pillion will freak out and the wind resistance is very strong. Catch a good draft and your legs will fly side way.

Slow down to stretch? Good idea. Can you imagine the seat is so bad to me that with the legs straight down also doesn't help, the seat is wide or rather the floor board is wide. Put you legs on the upper foot rest? It's still bend, no difference and the balance is off. It's like putting your center of gravity higher, very unstable and dangerous, one small stone and that's it.

Trying to figure out a way to bring the handle bar nearer or make the lumbar support straighter like GTS200. Why can't Kymco have ergonomic like GTS200?

When i first saw GTS200 back rest, i was like "what! so straight how to be comfortable?" After i sat on it and lean back, Boy! was it comfortable and very good support, can just lean back and relax. Downtown when i lean back it's like 45 degree before i can feel any support and i am barley touching the grip. Silly design. Seat on the seat like squatting when sit upright. Bad ergonomics! The designer don't ride the scooter or the tester is just focus on engine not comfort. Anyway it's a city scooter, so city scooter no need comfort?

Bringing the handle bar forward like Herbert says must change brake hoses and wiring as they may not be long enough, they are just the right length with original handle bar. So not wise to go through all that trouble.

So the next option is to re sculpt the seat.

Posted

Re-sculpture the seat also nigh impossible thanks to the hard hump to accommodate a helmet under the rider seat. Haha.

As quoted by the Xciting rider whom I met the other day. He used to ride DT and he claims the DT is a more comfortable ride. Haha.

Well, clearly, the DT is meant for short distance, city riding. Wonder how I'll tahan the trip to KL next Friday.

You done 550km ride in a day already. From here to KL is nothing to you. Have faith in yourselves. Slow down if you need. No need to rush. Touring is not about rushing.

Huh? Since when I did 550km in a day??

This KL trip is my first long distance trip.

IMO, the upper foot rest for show only ha ha ha. Copy Gilera Nexus. Come to think of it, Gilera Nexus can stretch all the way with the leg straighten until the edge., unlike Downtown for show only. Gilera Nexus also has higher seat. Only problem with Nexus is the slightly forward riding position almost like a sport bike where the body weight are shifted to the hands. Don't know about touring with a Nexus though.

Cos Nexus considered as Sports scooter. (Scooter and not the phone). Haha!!

Go sit on the new T-Max 530. You'll then come to realize the DT seating position actually not as bad as u think.

Haha.

No need to try actually. I know T-max position will be great.

Downtown seat from day 1 cannot get use to it. Always hunching, be it stopping at the lights or riding.

As i have mention before, to get to the right position and comfort, i have to make my stomach touch my thigh and my bird and jeans tuck in between my thigh. It's very comfortable for my back and posture but not my ku ku bird :p

Haha. I'm quite happy with my back posture while riding. The only thing I wish for more is legroom lorh.
