Hi, I'm Yucai a new member in this forum. I obtained my class 2b license around 1 1/2 years ago, and have not ridden since until now. I am currently planning to buy a Honda CB125F from Boon Siew. It is quite a big decision for me and I am slightly nervous, especially since I am unsure how much I have retained from riding school and how fast it would take to return to me. I would like to ask for advice regarding the following:

1. Do you have any riding advice for people like me, returning to ride after a long period since obtaining the class 2b license?

2. What kind of helmet should I choose? I do not wish to scrimp on protection, so I would like to know what are the good brands and what is the price range that I should be expecting.

3. I have a $200 accessory voucher usable at Lim Ah Boy and Chong Aik. Where should I go and what accessories do u recommend I get for a start?

Thank you in advance for the advice. If this has been covered in an old thread, I would appreciate being redirected to it.

1. For your first bike, don't buy a brand new bike. High chance you will drop the bike and breaking parts all over the place. Just get a 2nd bike from the 2nd hand market will do. New bike depreciate a lot and high chance it won't be your only bike to stay with you forever.

2. 3/4 face normal brand helmet normally will do. 3/4 face expensive helmet, usually over $100, get it if you got spare cash. If you want to spend $200 on a helmet, get a full face. HJC is a good starter. HJC Rpha 11 is now less than $400 can get liao. For me, I got both - 3/4 for daily commuting, FF when weather is good.

3. Raincoat, gloves, riding jacket, bike cover. Our bike parts are prone to rust, so at least get a cheap bike cover, especially in this rainy season. Bike cover is for sunlight, rain, bird **** and some dust protection.

A word of advice. When it rains, don't insist on riding. If can, I prefer not to ride in the rain and take mrt/bus instead.

1. Get a second hand bike. If possible get something near to your like but left coe like 1yr or so. Trust me. U will need time to accustom yourself to Singapore roads. Taxis that suddenly stop to pickup or dropoff passengers, cars that turn without signal, cars that turn like driving big trailer(wide turning), high beamers and honkers. Cheap bike at least damage not so bad.

2. For helmets, since you have a voucher, maybe u can get a slightly better helmet. Brands like AGV, Nolan with a little topup. Try not go for fullface as you may not get use to the view and some blind spot.

3. Get a good riding jacket if u have spare money. Serve as rain coat and protection. (2in one, maybe 3, by keeping you away from the road smell) If your regular parking space is sheltered, a bike cover may not be necessary.

Thank you for your input!

Went to Chong Aik to take a look today. Riding jackets are going on 30% discount for some brands but i hesitated to buy as I wasn't sure whether I would end up using it much considering the weather here. Do you all use your riding jacket regularly?

In the end I spent the voucher on a Vemar helmet and a top box. Topping up to get a raincoat and phone holder.

The gloves and bike cover sounds like a good idea too, maybe i will go down again before the sale ends.

Do you have any advice on how I should act on the roads while still familiarising with my motorbike? Like keep to left lane, don't lane split etc.

yes. go get a gloves and bike cover.

i personally wear a windbreaker instead..

if free time, go ride around your neighbourhood first.. left lane for sure as i guess u go at a low speed.. lane split when you feel more confident..
