i prefer dry ones. like need to change yearly or when it's drained.

wet ones v troublesome. had to top up every now and then. how to top up? had to take out your fairing/cover then take out the battery to top up with battery water. sibei troublesome.

how many types of bikes batteries r there? i tot only 2? wet & dry? ;D

now got wet, dry, MF, gel? -_____-'''

maybe i'm ignorance...

Hi All,

There are basically 3 types of motorcycle batteries. Namely:

1. Flooded batteries, ie. wet cells. This battery requires you to top up with distilled water regularly as there are more/bigger vents, the electrolyte tend to evaporate more quickly, not very popular as with bikes, as when u ride yur bike, you will regularly tilt d bike ie. when u corner, dis will cause the electrolyte to tilt one side, thus may cause leakages of electrolyte, this type of batteries are best suited when the vehicle are more upright ie. cars, less tilting of the electrolyte.

2. Maintenance free, ie. dry cell. They are not actually dry, they also have electrolyte, but the cells are sealed and you cannot top up with distillied water, they only have a vent on the side to reduce the internal pressure build up. Also not popular, same situation as above.

3. AGM (Absorbant Glass Matt) MF batt. The most common now. It uses the AGM to soak up the electrolyte and covers the lead plates with it, provides a constant current flow as the constant movement of d bike does not affect the current output, it can even be installed on its side.

I hope the information is useful for you.

Cheers!

wat abt the so called gel type. Cos i read and actually seen the product before wats the advantage?

you mean MF is stands for the Absorbant Glass Matt? but i tot MF is wat we are discussing as maintainence free? You mean MF and Maintainance Free is 2 different thing? Im confused here hope you can clarify me and pass me some knowledge. Thanks. So far i only been using 2 type that means. One is normal as you descride as Wet Cell and the other is Maintainence Free which as describe by you dry cell.

AGM= Absorbent Glass Matt

MF= Maintenance Free. (ie. no no need to top up distilled water at all, thus, AGM batt also consider a MF batt.)

Gel batt is also a form of MF batt. The diff being the electrolyte is not acid but gel instead. Currently, the BMW GS1150 uses this kind of gel batteries. Sizes available I am not veri sure but theoretically gel batteries should be quite stable in terms of electrolyte movement compared to sulphuric acid, production cost is most likely the factor as the AGM batteries are cheaper than gel batteries.

The acid filled MF batteries was scraped for motorcycle as its not practical for M/C usage, but they exist commonly for cars.

To further clarify, any batt dat do not require topping up and are sealed are called Maintenance Free (MF), thus MF batt covers batt like AGM, Gel etc. Sorry for the confusion caused.
