guys... today we found out something disturbing on TDM...

there's gap between petrol cap and tank and water will accumulate overtime leads to rust.

02 TDM

should report to YAMAHA for design fault ?

possible soultion: scrap all rust out and paint again.

possible prevention: put tank bra and custom petrol cap cover with velco (auntie shop can do)

It happens to Anodise57 (VStrom), as I've jus met him last sat...

He install those fuel saver bullet that has a metal clip hang by the side of the fuel cap. Over years the fuel rubber seal became dented and water started to seap into the tank. Recently, he found out that his tank is rusty due to the seapage... Have to replace a new tank... I joke at him : you save on your fuel to buy a oil tank... LOL... :sian:

By the way this 02 looks very bad... Must be under rain and shine... Shld change the rubber gasket long ago to prevent this from happening...

Most important, when park in the open space, cover yr bike. This will minimise the rain water from seaping into the fuel tank.

Luckily, mine still goods, an 02 too... But shld change the rubber gasket soon...

well, both bikes are parked under shelter most of the time, but since touring and daily use exposed to rain, and occassional bike wash with jet sprays gets the water to seep in i guess.

the problem is water does not flow down from drain pipe, even for mine 08 model, the drain pipe is still clear.

and u cant see this condition by opening fuel cap, have to unscrew all hex-nuts to dismentle the whole cap and ring unit.

The best solution is to not open it... So you'll never know..

Jus to check wi all expert here, I'm having this symptom...

When I starts the bike, the meter reset by itself...:slapforehead:

Both mileage meter 1 & 2 reset to 0, but ODO still remain...

Time reset to 1:00...

It happens twice already...

Is the battery going to retired soon ? Or what are the issues, master please enlighten....

this happened to me before. the meter 2 resets while #1 is running. ODO and time is ok. it happened during long rides to malaysia, and also while in sg...and it is sporadic...so i dont see any trend. i dont think it is the battery...prob some electric stuff that causes the meter to reset.

with respect to the corrosion of the tank mouth, i can see some signs already (mine is 08 model). i notice water getting it during heavy rain, regardless riding or stationary. so when parking in open, stick a car decal or clingwrap over the cover if you are too lazy to cover up :p

can change the rubber O-ring, but i already see water inside when bike was brand new...so it may be the design such that it is not 100% water-tight during heavy rain.

plasticblackspec's TDM had this issue before.. it was some cable loose.

and weak battery can cause meter to reset too.

or may be just hungry ghost

pushing the bikes for 40 minutes just at the entrace of tight trail... coz tree logs are fallen across and fat pigs are not tall enough to clear one shot... and repeated attempts resulting rear wheel digging sand... so have to lift the bike up and push over the logs :sian:

Guys, I'm getting 340km & around another 50+km more on reserve on a full tank.

Almost 400km before my tank dries up.

Is that normal for a 03 model?

I heard that a 07model can reach around 500km including reserve....
