Oh sorry bro for the late info...

Asphalt giving me a superb deal for the almost new LV pipe, very temping... But I've something else in mind... Remus...

It's pretty hard to get a TDM aftermarket exhaust, cos everyone holding on to their precious ride.

Actually intend to get it next month but my tooth took the cash away...

hey bro, no worries...me will juz wait alil bit longer b4 gettin a pair..haha

btw u have decline a tempting offer on the lvs coz of wanting the hexcacones rite?

fyi, twinterror bought it w/o hearing or seeing the hexs, but damn, they look great n they sound LOUD!!

honestly tot the hexs were illegal! haha..and am impressed wif the quality also

the only con is...he had to wait 3 mths for it!!

so bro..wat u waiting for? :)

y not have a kopi session soon?, so can hear and feel the hexs?

hey twinterror! when u free???..i also wan to hear! hahaha

Before I took over the bike, I've did abit of research and web surfing... Found out the Remus Hexacones... Coolz...

The offer is very very tempting... Good price for a very new pipe... But lastly manage to resist it...

Haxacones is legal rite ? Cos I can't risk another illegal pipe cos kanna caught twice already... If the third time, I'll need to donate my bike and license to LTA... Hahaaa....

Initially intend to get it before the end of the year, but last month visited the Dentist (for root canal and crowning ~ $2k) and donate my pipe to him liao... Need to save up again before can buy the pipe...

Kopi session here is abit tough to organise cos mostly are "uncles/mans" whom are committed to work/kids/wife/mistress... Hope you can understand...

Last saturday, Angelo was "jioing" for a ride but I think no one available/free...

You can try to organise one, but I can only sneak out after 10pm after settle my BB, provided my wife got no OT...

good write up for TDM

Totally Different Motorcycling

Once hailed as perfect for British roads, theTDM seemed to go from sexy to senile in just a few years. Or did it?

Overview

It all started so well. We're back in late 1991 and the TDM850 has first seen light of day. Journalists from the mainstream press are praising the bike, calling it the best all-round bike available, a real ‘do-it-all ’motorcycle: even the performance say that the TDM850is a ‘GSX-R eater’ on the blighted back roads of Britain

TheTDM was – in effect – a grownupTDR250. Upright style, roomy riding position, wide bars, and an850cc parallel twin derived from the old Super Tenere grasped in a miniDeltabox frame. The press said it worked and worked well, aside from soft forks and clunky gearbox, andYamaha must have been beside themselves with glee as their ‘NewSports’ concept seemed vindicated

So why did the TDM go from ‘terrific’ to being labelled the ‘Tedium’ by the self-same press in a few years?Truth be told, I don't know. Maybe it didn't keep up with the times enough. After all, every couple of years out would trot another sports bike, be it a 600, 750 and later on a1000, but not so the TDM. It did change a bit though. In 1996 the bug-eyed stare went in favour of a slinkier, Glynn Kerr-designed lupineslant, which gave it a softer look. In came bigger forks, a closer-ratio gearbox and – from the TRX850 – a270º crank for the motor. Then, for around six years, things stayed the same and the dull moniker seemed to have stuck

Even 2002’s big changes didn't seem to perk the bike up. In came an updated 897cc motor, less weight, new twin-spar frame and digital clocks, but us Brits still stuck with what we knew – sports bikes and sports-tourers

That’s a shame as there is still so much to love in a TDM of all ages. A well-sorted one is still a hoot and a great bike. With a life stretching from1991 until today it’s there waiting to be discovered by bikers of all shapes, sizes and wallets

Why do they get overlooked?

People didn't really know what it was. Was it an upright sports bike? A big trailie? A sports-tourer? They didn't know, they still don't and in the UK if you can't pigeonhole things, you dismiss them. Our continental friends were less apt to do this and many a saucyTDM with open pipes, wider wheels and straight bars was seen circumnavigating Le Périphérique

In fact, in the decade from theTDM’s 1991 launch until the launch of the 900 version, Yamaha claimed that in the 750-1000cc category inEurope, the TDM was the second biggest seller behind Honda’s VFR

That’s impressive

Instead, here in the UK we seemed to eventually sneer at it and put heated grips and panniers on the thing. Perhaps also our passion for twins subsided. The TDM was soon joined in the Yamaha stable by theTRX850 in 1996, a true twin sports bike with Ducati-alike frame and looks so what spotlight there was on Yamaha’s twins moved away

By the time we hit the Noughties we had even dismissed all but Italian twin-cylinder sports bikes, save for the Honda SP1/2 series. Maybe theTDM’s power plant just wasn't powerful enough?

What to check

It’s the three ‘Fs’. Finish, finish and finish. Oh, and suspension on older models. Paint is notoriously shoddy on the older bikes and the exhausts suffer big-time – listen for a fartymisfiring noise. Early carb’d TDMs can feel like they have flat spots, which may be caused by worn carburetors: the needles start rattling around and wear their emulsion tubes. So do get a test ride and ask if any aftermarket needles/DynoJet kit has been fitted

Some clutches were also repaired under warranty on early 850s

Owners report some engine fans on the 850ccTDM sticking on thanks to problems with the thermostat or fan switch. A number of later TDM900swere called back for changes/checks to the ECU on the fuel injection system. The superb R1 brakes we refitted to the 2002-on 900 version, and while still offering plenty of power they degrade quickly if not cleaned up after every salty winter

Forks are soft... more so when showed up by the R1 brakes. Go for heavier 15WT fork oil or invest in stiffer springs – makes a hellua difference. Some owners also speedup steering by dropping the forks10mm. Rear shock is soft too, with many older TDMs now sporting aftermarket items

Equipment

The original 850 came in with twin analogue clocks and a temperature gauge and you really didn't need much more than that. Handy, under the-rear bodywork points allowed you to bungee stuff to the rear pillion seat, which also got a pseudo grab rail/spoiler thing. For the 2002 relaunch things went digital. In came anew digital speedo, two trips, an LCDfuel gauge, water temp gauge, and hazard lights. Hold the SELECTbutton down for two seconds and you swap between mph and km/ph, nice for those trips to the Continent

Official Yamaha extras included heated grips, luggage, centre stand two sizes of screen.

What's it like to ride?

Clean and perfect. This bike from World of Bikes in Corby, Northants is a perfect advert for a well looked afte rbike. This 2008 TDM may have covered nearly 15,000 miles, but it looks more like 1500. Giving the bike a look over, it’s flawless. No daft extras, either – save for a Scottoiler:a reassuring sign as to the previous owner’s sympathies. The great thing about a TDM is that it’s sizeable enough for you to feel as if it’s a real‘big’ bike, but not the sort of lofty seat height that can only be occupied by a performing a flying roundhouse kick. It’s a nice halfway house between a big retro and a dedicated large trailie, like a KTM Adventure

Controls are light and responsive –feet-up full-lock U-turns are possible and low-speed handling is positive and not too twitchy. Early 850s could even pull away from a standstill in third from 1700rpm, so there’s enough urge from low down. The first 850s would pull to 4000rpm, dip at the 5000rpm emissions/sound gate before taking off briskly to the peak of 7500rpm. Riding the 900,you’ve got a useful increase in overall power across the rev range (10bhpmore than an early 850) and the fuel injection makes it all snatch-free

Handling at high speed is a doddletoo, thanks to big bars, big wheelsand (on this bike) BridgestoneBT021s

That’s not to say all is perfect: bigmen like me will always mention‘soft’ when talking about thesuspension and it’s the same here

Front suspension is adjustable for rebound and preload, so I’d go for a fair bit more of the latter, especially when those R1-derived brakes began to bite. Overall, this was a beautiful example of the TDM breed

What to pay

Basket cases can be found decoratedin Hammerite for a few hundredquid, but a nice TDM850 starts at awhisker under a grand. Many earlyexamples will have done 20-60,000miles or more, so watch out for finish but a good condition 850 (pre-1996) can still fetch around £1500 ina dealership. Later TDM900s can befound starting at a shade over £2000and often come with a host ofdesirable extras, such as luggage, heated grips and Scottoilers. Pricesthen rise to around £6500 for nearlynew machines

Verdict

Cliché though it is, the TDM can beall things to all men. It’s still acompetent, comfortable motorcycleand can be found for a range ofprices. Try one.

Guess only me going to Moto GP then...

Hi Angelo... even though i like to watch motoGP but it's more risky for my ride (both riding up and parking there) at major events.

every rider will have motoGP spirit and ride faster on the way (arent we fast enough already) and cases of bike lost are heard every year...

beside... i'm more interested in offroad/camping trip with AJ.. (havnt inform him yet though)

good and bad...

good:

-very bright, can blind car drivers if they come into my lane (in small lanes near my block)

-can shine NSHW

-can shine Thailand's dark roads

-free installation by "vtr firestorm" :cheeky:

bad:

-too bright for rider/driver infront (bad for convoy riding)

-takes up too much power (my batt was goner for 2 years usage, most batt can last for 4 years)

-could blown up headlight fuse (which i have changed to higher amp)

-inspection would fail (which i need to change back to H7)

hexaconesfor tdm are legal. mine inspected within an hr and a cert to go along. just dont remove silencer and then get caught.

if timing is right, u can get it within a week. motoworld orders from HQ on regular basis, so if u order just before the HQ sents out the shipment, u will get it in a week's time.

the CF is great...low maintenance for a guy like me who doesnt polish bike often
