Hello all.... I need a guru who can answer my rather newbie question.

Question no. 1:

How come most zoom lens don't have aperture settings as big as a standard lens'?

Many zoom lens only open up to f3.5. A 50mm standard lens will open right up to f1.8. How come?

Question no. 2:

When comparing digital and film SLRs, why is there always a factor of 1.5 (Canon DSLRs usually 1.6) multiplied to the focal length of the lens on DSLRs?

i believe yr understanding of std lens is a lens with a single focal length, such as 50mm, 85mm, 300mm and so on.

there are zoom lenses that has big aperture, such as canon EF24-70mm f2.8L. this lens has constant aperture of f2.8 throughout from 24mm to 70mm, but zooms with big aperture are very expensive.

this is also known as crop factor or focal length multiplier. unless the dslr is a full frame (FF, which its sensor size is same size as 35mm film), it has 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x. See here for more details.

Thanks. Been reading up as much as I can to catch up... I'm so waaaaay behind!

I'm trying to make the jump from my faithful 1977 Nikon FM to a D50, and hopefully kickstart a hobby I had left since my college days 10 years ago.

Hi Bro,

I suggest you start with a D70s instead.

Kit lens for D50 - 18-55

Kit lens for D70s - 18 -70

The differences in price are defintely worth the while.

Cheers

No thanks lah. I'm on a budget.

A colleague has a D70S. Tried it... but methinks D50 looks less intimidating to use. Less buttons, although no DOF preview but what the hell.

Was also considering the new Olympus E-500, stacks more pixels for roughly RM200 more than a D50. That ultrasonic dust shaker thingie also quite nice but the CCD must have been bloody tiny with a factor of 2.0 so I left it alone.

Someone wanted to flog a used KM Maxxum 5D really cheap. But it seems there aren't any more Minolta shops around in KL, since KM has decided to shut down its camera business.

So I took the plunge and coughed up for a Nikon D50.

Posted

Actually megapixel isnt as important here since a D2H has a lower MP than a D50 or D70 and the image is sufficient for a magazine cover.

I'd prefer to go for more market available brands coz there are more 2nd hand lens available and also it will be easier to sell.

Anyway, since you have already acquire your D50, can start saving for the 18-200 VR or others haha

Btw, what is your subject mainly?

Cheers

Actually, I would like an AF 50mm f1.8.

I have the manual 50mm Nikkor on my FM, I miss this lens on my D50. Nice and fast enough for a schmuck point-and-shoot guy like me.

Hey if I swap, I wonder can fit or not... hmmm...!!!!!

hi guys, i'm thinking of buying D70s Kit as it is offering $1788 + Case + Dry Box + Tripod + 4GB CF Card + 2 yrs extended warranty at Harvey Norman at the moment.....

however, i'm not a pro user, so i also looking into coolpix 8800... so i dont have to spend too much on lenses and i can take point and shoot style photo...

the great Nikon AF-S 18-200mm cost about $1300, i took marco and scenary a lot, i afraid the standard 18-70mm cannot fullfill all my needs, and buying new lense is damn expensive...

need to save some $$ on SB800 flash also...

what do you guys think?

anyone here using D70s + DX 18-200mm + SB800 setting?

Hi bro,

Welcome to the beautiful world of PHOTOGRAPHY!

I think there is no better time than to buy the D70s than now with HN. I started out with a prosumer and sold it off to upgrade to a DSLR within six months. Frankly speaking, comparing a DSLR to a Prosumer is like comparing apple to orange as they are altogether in a different league.

My means of upgrade is not a new set. My body is a 2nd hand set and some of my lenses are from the resale market which I find value for money.

For the kit lens that comes with the D70s, it is defintely a good lens which is more than sufficient for day to day use. Believe it anot, many of the award winning photographs are taken with the kits lens. There are also people whom uses the kit lenses for wedding and events photography.

The AFS 18-200 VR is a general walkabout lens, especially for overseas trips. It saves the trouble of lugging different lenses. However, do not expect this lens to give the WOW factor.

Talking about buying lens and bodies, many do not realise that the most important factor is the man behind the camera. I believe you can start out with the D70s kit and a SB800. Until you are comfortable and confident about the use of the camera, don't even think of buying another lenses.

Btw, this 2 lenses are defintely not suitable for marco. You may like to look at the 2nd hand market for one to use specially for marco purposes.

P.S - Beware of the BBB (Buy Buy Buy)syndrome!

the setup u wanna buy i think is good enuf.

18-200VR is so good that u need not worry abt changing lens during travel.

one lens covers most of commonly used range and VR comes handy too at certain times when u need it most.

if i'm a nikon user, this will be my travel lens.

wonder why canon do not hv this range... haiz..

but before u buy dslr, take note that the colour straight-out-of-cam is not so flattering comparing to any P&S. post processing is needed.
