I love skating, but with so many biz trips and my trail riding, have no time to go as frequently as I did. Also seems to rain when I am free.

For skates, get Salomon, definitley have no regrets.

And dun forget the safety equipment.

Don't get the cheap plasticky ones from Carrefour - they'll probably give u blisters and not last beyond a couple of months. Plus, it'll decrease your enjoyment of the sport as the movements are awkward and not smooth... think of it as a bike with lousy suspension! :nono:

Yup, Salomons are good and mid-priced (about $200+ for a very decent pair) - I've owned a pair for a while now and it's been trouble-free.

Just a few quick words - get wheels that are abec 5 and above... it'll give you a smoother ride and they're not too fast for a learner.

A naughty tip - get hand sliders (those fingerless ones that protect from abrasions but not sprains) if you find wrist guards too restrictive. Umm... slightly more dangerous but well worth the comfort :clapping: Just a personal preference that may work for u :thumb:

salamon prices are kinda steep. but overall they are fantastic skates.

i myself own a k2. coz i love their softboots tech.

regular skater @ ecp.

Out of aggressive/recreational/hockey/speed/slalom,

my fav has to be slalom. Am not an expert, but still learning the fundamentals.

afterall great fun is just 2 feets away!

  • 4 weeks later...

K2 blades are good too, I using them for some time, still good!

Hmmm..... Above Abec 5 may be a bit too smooth & fast for a beginner.....

East Coast IS a nice place to blade, I always blade all the way from e start of the stretch at East Coast, ie - Ford Rd there, to somewhere near the Yatch Club of East Coast. Nice..........

I also veri interested leh... just bought salamon skate but dun really know how to blade. It's equipt with abec 7.

Star mentioned more than abec 5 is not suitable for beginner... how arr :giddy:

anyway, any one can teach how to skate? dun know how to break effectively

abec 7... no problem. but beginner will find it too smooth for comfort

initial learning curve may be tougher than most... but after that, you will be glad that you have the abec 7 ball bearings

be sure to learn T-braking and the emergency sliding brake for that instantaneous stop!! it saves lives espeicially when you are gg downslope. on tarmac. with oncoming traffic!!

dun rely on the blades brakes too much, they wear out fast, have to spend $$ to replace and can cause a dangerous hindrance when u are going down staircases. they are like trippling blocks sometimes.

but iz good to learn to brake at first with the OEM brakes if u are a beginner. then go on to the T-braking and when later on if u need it (high speed cases), can combine the normal braking and t-brake to do what we call the Power-brake last time.

The higher the number ie Abec 5, 7 etc... The faster & smoother ur blading speed.

When jus beginning, shld consider Abec 3, when u have learned how to blade, brake, more or less handle urself, then can change to Abec 5 or higher.

I started at Abec 3, now at Abec 5, and got another pair is Micro bearings, even smoother - nice!

Jus my 2 cents worth.
