Currently running 2 OS after installing Ubuntu OS. Not new to this type of platform ever since using Sun Microsystem for FYP back in poly days. I really like what Ubuntu deliever with linux performance with Windows friendly user interface. Harldly any crash. Many application like paint, dvd player, office.org,(.doc,xlm etc) all free from the start. Best of all i can event share the file from windows directly.. For those who is intersted, go n download it.. It free..

I couldnt get my java to work after installing, the singpass log in page still cant detect my firefox has java already? What command do i use to test the java in my firefox?

I guess you will be more comfortable with point and click, so try running Synaptics thing from the Administration menu do seach for sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin packages, select and apply. Synaptics will get all dependancies installed for you.

Try Linux Mint Its based on ubuntu too.I'm using version 10.10 now.It comes with the most common plugins installed,java,flash,quicktime etc.Sometimes i wish windows is more like this.Surfing to the website and downloading individually the plugins is such a chore.

So, you have an Acer laptop... OK.

Yes, there are tons of linux flavours and some suck more than others. Although there are lots of similarities, Linpus is not the most popular. Also, Linpus in not Ubuntu.

 

In the meantime, see if Linpus has a built-in software installation mechanism, commonly referred to as a "package manager" in other linux distributions. If it does, see if there is a Java environment available using the Linpus software installation mechanism. If it doesn't you can download and install it manually.

 

 

As a side note, Ubuntu is the most user-friendly, most usable desktop linux OS; it comes without Acer's crap that they injected into their OS - Ubuntu fully supports all languages and more, without 'try me, buy me' nagware.

You can download Ubuntu for free, burn it on a CD, install in one go with only 5 or so clicks and follow previously given instructions. Very easy thing to do.

In any case you will get a fully functional OS right out of the box and forget about Linpus in no time.

Thanks for the info, quickshift. I ve given up on my linpus, what a pus. My 8yr old mac works much better instead.
