Hi all,

I recently started riding in Singapore. As a beginner on the road, I always lose my way...

I have an iphone 3GS, great as a handy GPS. However, I can't hold it in hand when riding.

Is there a way to mount the iphone onto my scooter? I have a Piaggio X8. Please give me some advice on which bike shop can do the mount job.

Many thanks!

:cheeky:

Update:

Looks like I really need a GPS... Today I took a wrong turn on TPE, and ended up in Changi airport....( I was going to Punggol)...

for scooters, they dont have a handlebar which can be used to mount conventional holders. but like asmodeus said, you can use those windshield sucker to mount ur iphone. only thing is that your iphone will be subjected to elements of nature. best is to get a covered waterproof case for the iphone then mount it on the windshield sucker or get a ram-mount waterproof box or the biologic case from Dahon. the latter 2 will require you to get a special mount.

Other than suction, can improvise to be screwed in as sometimes suction not as secure.

Think best is do not use Iphone as a GPS on a bike as its not exactly shock proof or water proof. Few of my friends are using the dedicated CX60 from Garmin and it seems like THE GPS for riding long distance. Hope it helps.

if you want to use this kinda mount on the bike, i suggest you get your iphone one of this otterbox case http://www.otterbox.com/iphone-cases/iphone-3g-3gs-cases/iphone-3g-3gs-defender-case/ effective against bumps and dirt but it is not protected against water. with a case like that my guess would be that it would definitely be at least drizzle proof - till u find a shelter to remove ur iphone. i dont suggest you putting your iphone naked on this kinda mount or naked on any mount in a matter of fact.

For me, i have already invested in an iPhone and it has many excellent Turn-by-Turn Voice navigation apps and buying another GPS standalone unit would means spending extra unnecessary money (cos already have a good GPS app like Sygic) as well as having to bring along an extra device on bike rides. It would be more of a burden to me.

then again people talk about battery life of the iPhone when using GPS apps. Using GPS apps will drain ur iPhone battery faster thus leaving you with a dead phone at the end of the ride. But all this can be solve by connecting up a charger to ur battery huh? a car has a ciggy port for charging stuff why cant bikes have one too? mine has a DIY 5V USB port so i charge my iphone while using the GPS Apps and i dont face any "battery not enough" problem at the end of the ride.

Next people talk about waterproof GPS Unit against the iPhone. i have a case mount that is weather proof. good enough for me to ride in light rain. so what if the case is not waterproof, i am not going to ride in heavy rain anyway, or underwater. so i dont really need a fully waterproof device. but of course if the case is waterproof i wouldn't mind one bit. just that i dun know of any waterproof case that is made specifically for the iphone to be mount on bikes.

everything said above is IMO. To each his own to cater for individual needs.

Thanks! This is very helpful! How did you mount the case to your bike?

A few Phantom Knights use the biologic iphone mount which has some sort of clip that attaches to the handlebar. It is indeed rain resistant.

However there may/will be complications on a scooter which may or may not have suitable location on the handlebar. Which gives rise to the idea of suction cup mounts on the large windscreens.

brought the capdase at challenger ;)

but so far haven had the chance to use

very scare the shaking and vibration or braking will cause the iphone to fly out!

any solutions?

Use rubberband to secure ur iphone lo since you already got that case already. Just that have to be careful when it rain. Just one drop of water into the earphone port which triggers your moisture sensor then its byebye to ur warranty.

how much you bought the capdase bike phone mount at challenger? looking for something like that..

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

I think whether u have a tough case or not is nt really crucial... More importantly should be able to withstand a bit of water... And most importantly dun fly off the mount...

I oso just saw e capdase bike mount earlier today and also pondering whether to buy....
