1. Check that the coolant reserve is topped up WITH COOLANT, NOT DISTILLED WATER

 

2. Check the radiator fins to see if a massive patch of them had been damaged recently. Damaged fins will impede air flow, causing a rise in temperature

 

3. Check that you do not have a leak. Do you see steam from the radiator when it is hot? Does your exhaust look smoky?

 

4. I can't quite remember the exact name of this component, but this is the part that will spin and cycle the coolant everytime you throttle the bike. I think it's called a radiator pump. If it isn't working, chances are that the coolant is not flowing properly or isn't flowing at all to be cooled.

 

5. If there is a temperature sensor that triggers the temperature indicator, check that it is not shorted

 

Personally, given your mileage, it might just be a clogged radiator. I'd give the radiator a good flush first, then monitor the situation.

The bikes had probably not been run in properly because you can't load the bike at high RPMs in the circuit, not to mention the rough/uneven use of the throttle by students... I wouldn't want to own a BBDC hornet

thanks paul..

 

1) my coolant reserve was filled wif coolant but juz not enuff.. so i top it up wif distilled water.. is tat goin to pose any prob ?

 

2) ya checked it oredi.. light damage.. should not be a prob..

 

3) no steam at all.. my exhaust as no colour watsoever.. squeezed my tubin too.. everything seems to be in order..

 

4) i noe abt this component.. but how to check if its spoilt ?

 

5) i oso suspect a faulty temperature warning light.. but how to check ?

Distilled water will heat up faster than coolant due to it's lower boiling pt, causing a faster increase in temperature and eventual overheating?

I don't know if there is a way to check.... But if the coolant pump is spoiled, you will notice that your bike overheats very fast, even when on the move.

Sorry, can't help. You need to check your wiring diagram, then use a multimeter to check for short.

 

I think you mentioned flickering... perhaps it might really be a short.

just noticed... the trip with kes is in march, not april as stated in all the quoted messages...

 

here is one way i learnt to check the coolant pump.

 

Bike cool.

Remove coolant cap.

Start bike.

throttle.

Observation: Will see coolant swell and when you throttle more, the coolant level will drop. release and it comes back up.

 

Warning: Do not stand directly above the radiator opening. Observation can be done from a distance.

Guys, thanks for the attention to the Sports Panniers.

 

Too bad it didnt fit the Hornets due to the high exhaust.

 

But its good fun and experience.
