Hey mak

Didn't face much problem on my last trip into Saigon .... but it is mandatory to get a sponsor to bring you in. I hired a tour operator who manages all the paperworks prior to entry. The Vietnamese customs will not let you in if you show up at their border. Your sponsor will have to be there when you are entering. We spent about 30 minutes at the custom where they will issue you with a temporary Vietnamese license, road tax and thorough checks on your chasis and engine number. That's all and you're good to go.

And Vietnamese regulations require your travel in Vietnam to be escorted. So all this won't come cheap. But i know of some people who only engage sponsor to settle their entry at the border and travel in Vietnam on their own.

Did have some problem when we exited Vietnam into Cambodia where the Cambodian customs refused to let us in. Eventually they let us in with the power of a name card. But there were no issues in Vietnam. Our escort in Vietnam was free of charge where the local motorcycle club volunteered to escort us from the border into Saigon. Nice people.

I will be heading to Hanoi in December and is still in negotiation with the same operator to let us ride on our own at some point of time. Still waiting for his reply.

Perhaps the other riders who have entered Vietnam didn't have much problem too. Hope this helps.

Hi Guy's,

I am thinking of doing Chiangmai / Loas and Vietnam Trip in Jan 2011 ( SOLO TRIP)

Any advise for me ...... Thinking of doing it in 16 days as it will be based on Daily riding about 500 to 700km.

Maybe long stops in Chiangmai or Chiangrai...

Cheer's,

Carl

Carl

If you're thinking of long stops in Northern Thailand, I reckon 16 days may be insufficient. Some roads in Northern Laos of about of about 400km can take you the whole sunlight. Probably possible if it's just a night stop on every destination. But some places are worth to spend an extra day.

16 days can cover SG-Msia-Thai (Northern)-Laos. A bit hard to cover Vietnam too.

Take YPaul's advice. 400km is just nice once you hit into central/western/northern Thai.

i see... noted, but any particular site where i can get cambodia n vietnam gps maps? tried serching but most is either dated 2007, 2006 or must pay close to USD80 for it

cause i was thinking that, if i had a gps map for it, atleast it could show me the nearest petrol station or accommodation, scary man if there is a problem finding for one.

when u went to laos, was it easy to find a petrol station? or u got to ask around?

Just came back from Northern Laos .. go get a laos map from m-technik , take note of all the major towns in bold most of them is 150-200km apart ...those places are area with guest hse and petrol kiosk....btw the petrol koiosk will close at 8pm singapore time aka 7pm their time and all shops will be closed it will get real dark by 6pm our time. plan your time to stop at those towns before 4pm so you can source for lodging, which should not be an issue .

The budget for accomdation will be abt 10-15 USD or 80k-120 kips

petrol will be abt 9000 -10000 and12000 kips per liter (12k is the roadside villages barrel hand pump kiosk in the hills in between town.)

All town petrol kiosk will be prominently label as well as guest hse in english also alng the main road ,you only have to slow down to SEE. anyway town speed is 30km/h.

i always have 4 lter spare just in case.

The Garmin GPS BASE MAP for LAOS is very basic but it does have 1 use , to tell you that you have come to some major junction so you can ask ppl where to turn, use it onli for that, other than that it's just a distraction. (bring along a compass more accurate).

and change your money to kips they prefer it that way , the rate should be about 1 sing to 6000 kips 1 usd to 8000 kips

Yup yup ... the scenery from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is simply breathtaking ... but they say the northern Vietnam is as spectacular too. Heading up tomorrow, will feedback accordingly.
