Hi all!

I've a GSX400f. Over the weekend it seems like a bunch of drunk kids went and kicked my bike over :S Now it won't start. I've tried emptying out the carbs, turning off the fuel cock, pressing the starter for a while, then turning the fuel cock back on and trying to start again. No go. :S Anyone has any ideas on what might be wrong?

I'm a little worried that the fuel might not be flowing as smoothly as it should. Anyone knows how I can make sure that the fuel is flowing fine?

Thanks in advance guys!! Really appreciate it!!

Try 'on' the bike for awhile and try starting again. It works on my previous bike, you would need to crank a few times to start.

gas her a little while holding the starter... once she burbles into life dont need to press the starter alr... but rev her abit

also, i know it seems obvious, but they may have fiddled with your engine run switch too...

I did try that! Now the battery is running weak and i'm a little scared cos I don't have kickstart :S

Tried doing that too, but she doesn't seem to respond :S I'm afraid I actually flooded the carbs again by revving her once more! What happens if they fiddled with my engine run switch? >.

Answer is Wet Spark Plug. Change spark plug try. Cos the fuel all flow to your spark plug liaoz. Wet spark plug cannot produce spark so cannot start.

Do i need to change a completely new spark plug? I checked my plugs and they're dry, but that's after 2 days now.

the engine run switch.... er... i have a friend who likes to "help" us turn our engine run switch off

then after tt when we try to start... how come cannot start... then finally, basket! the engine run switch is off!

last time i knocked the bike over and flooded her i just kept kicking her repeatedly like a fool and finally she sprung into life (that was a memorable day for my leg). but since urs is electric start i dont advise u do that

when i drop my scram offroad we will usually do the press starter and give gas thing but tt doesnt seem to work in ur case

can change the spark plug(s) like bernardk said, put in some fresh plugs and see how

if she still cannot start u may want to try push start

does she have gas? if she's been lying down long enough, quite a bit of the gas might have trickled out.

Don't gas it until you hear the engine begin to catch. Otherwise as you said you'll flood it again.

The kill switch should be ok, otherwise the starter wouldn't crank :)

So you've tried starting after checking the plugs, and there's still no response?

Just shooting in the dark here: could it be the opposite problem - you're out of fuel? Maybe it just drained out when your bike was on its side, or even intentionally drained away / stolen by the vandals? o_O

hahaha.. nah, it's not the engine run switch that's off (I'm blur, but at least i remembered this bit :p)

gah, push start at zero degree celsius is scary! Let me try getting new sparks first (hopefully that works) I was hoping I didn't have to get new plugs - it's not as easy to find over here! :S

I tried after checking the plugs, but i didn't change them! :S (have to go hunt for new ones).

My fuel indicator still shows fuel, and it looks like there should definitely be enough to go around? :S Doesn't really sound like the fuel's going in though..

I know you already drained your carb, but mine was i think carb related. My bike toppled to the side. I spent almost 5 mins kickstarting the damn thing. Turn off the fuel cock. Kick and kick and kick and kick until sian. Then finally open fuel cock, left the fuel flow a bit, then kick, then can start. But i think mine was carb overflow. I also had to cycle the gears up and down all the way because i feel like the gears "stuck" like that. Try getting a friend to help you push start?

Will do that!

Just checked the plugs and realized they're a little dirty/rusty. I'm not sure how to ground the plug to see if it sparks though. Would you know how to do that?

To check for spark, undo the spark plug, connect up the lead to the spark plug and lay the body so that it touches something metallic on your bike (top of cylinder head is good). Turn the engine over (electric starter is best) and you should see a good spark jump from the tip.

You only need 2 things for the engine to start, fuel and spark, find out what's missing and go on from there.

Oh bro on your other thread i figure does your bike have air filter? could be time to change too. Hmmmm

when you start the bike just lift it up alittle should be able to see. But anyway plugs are not expensive ah. Its already proven that copper plug is the best but not the longest lasting.

When your bike fell, fuel overflow from your carb to your engine due the the float needle valve open, possibly wetting the plug and your continuous cranking has weaken the battery. Your spark plugs should be ok just clean with a tooth brush and fix it back.

Since you have drain the carb, please ensure the float bowl is filled again with petrol and your battery is fully charge up then you should be able to fire up the bike.

your Possible Problems and solution thread lor

I don't see the link with that thread and this topic bro. I was just telling TS what happened to me when my bike toppled to the side and how i managed to start the engine, months ago. The possible problems and solutions thread is about my electric start...

Seems like the plugs are good! I tried restarting after checking the plugs again, and this time the engine misfired a few times but didn't get started. Any reason why? I'm charging my battery now, so I can try again in a few hours!

How to i make sure the float bowl is filled with petrol again? I'm thinking of draining the carbs again before i try again, because I tried to pump the throttle and I'm afraid that flooded the carbs once again :S

So, I recharged the battery, drained the carbs, pressed the starter and...

...VOILA! It works! :D My baby's back to life!

Thanks guys for all your help! Really appreciate it!

Btw, I noticed that she sounds a little rougher/deeper now. Would there be anything wrong with that? :S
