what's you mean by a new learning process?

the BMC will learn about the fuel and air mixture again and the bike process... don't understand it either.

anyway took it for a spin for 50km plus and it feels better, maybe its all in the mind.:cheeky:

just came back from pml. Plug in the computer and no fault was found!

the fuel filter/regulator, throttle cable and plugs are new(less than 2weeks old). So in the end they reset my BMC?? and suspect that the throttle body might have some problem. The reset will allow a new learning proccess for the bike?

But they ask me to moniter first before changing it as the bike's mileage is too low for the throttle body to have problem.

Yes, thats a BMW badge. 1st bike powered by a BMW straight 6 will probably be the new K1600LT. (They said minimum 1600cc!)

bmw has been making straight 6's since the 1970's. the small block 6 was used extremely successfully in the 3 series BMW's till the late 90's. of course they have the larger capacity straight 6 that was used in the venerable m3 and m5 until they switched to the v lumps in the 2000's.

the interesting part is how they manage to make it sooooooo narrow!

Otherwise just order from PML; or see if the usual BMW shops have a scraped machine with the side panels.

anyone knows how to install a alarm on my bike? :faint:

I bought a Spy alarm from the CMO section of this site and had them installed in Motorworld, as many shops I asked refused to do so for BMW bikes.

I was happy Muji was willing to install for me at a low price, but the handiwork of his mechanic leaves a lot to be desired. The wires were really messy, so much so that I am considering removing it.

Also be aware that the parasitic drain on the battery is quite high, even if you don't arm it. Phang once measured the drain on his bike installed with an expensive BMW alarm. After 1 week of not riding, the battery was at 75% charge.

After installing mine, my ABS start flashing alternately more often when starting my bike, indicating a weak battery. This is despite me riding almost everyday. To be fair, mine was an old battery. I have a friend with the same alarm installed in a STX and he has no problems. So it could be due to the ABS being sensitive to the change in voltage.

Anyway, unless you ride your bike often or you have a battery charger, you may want to think twice.

Changed my brake pads the other day. I was surprised at how fast the OEM brakes I changed a year ago wear out. Even though I usually use the brakes lightly, the pads were totally gone. No wonder I sometimes heard screeching sounds when braking. The metal was rubbing against the disc! Check your pads once in a while guys.

After replacing with new pads, I hear a rattling sound when riding. This is especially loud when riding off from cold. It is as if there is a loose screw inside my fuel tank. Very irritating sound.

I did a check on the internet and found lots of topics on rattling brakes This one is especially interesting. Click me

There is a small clip like a paper clip attached to the top of the OEM pad. This is an anti-rattling clip to prevent just the type of noise I am hearing.

I saw it when the shop was replacing the pads and also noticed that it was not on the aftermarket WP pads. But being ignorant, I thought it was a 'design' thing and didn't bother about it.

If anyone here is about to change their brakes and don't need these clips (I read some after-market pads have them as well), can you please don't throw away the old pads and keep them for me?

Anyone heard of the brand 'WP'? Can't find it on the internet. Supposedly made in Germany. Just wondering how good it is or whether it is a genuine German product.

Hi,i think the pad you change is for those later model 1100 and 1150. those brake calipers are a bit different from the ealier 1100, it seems that the ealier 1100 calipers do not have a spring to tension the pad so you got those rattling noise esp when moving on red brick tile roads.

if i'm correct the clip is fixed permanently on the pad. i too change the wrong pad and thought something is wrong with my brakes.

Thanks for the info, f650gs. You are right, my calipers have no spring mechanism to push back the pads. What pads do you use? How do you know which are meant for the older models and which are for the newer ones?

As you can see from the link, the guy has to drill through the old pads to remove the anti-rattle clips. It's a hassle but much better than to have to bear with the irritating sound until the next change.

It makes me wonder how shops who profess to know about BMW bikes can overlook things like this. :(

I went back to them to complain about this but the mech just said, "It's OK one. Just wait for the pads to bed in and the noise will disappear."

Apparently, these people have never heard of the internet and chat pages where bikers do research and exchange info.

Try this kind of cheap tricks in Europe and Japan and I'm sure the shop will be gone in less than a year.

Hi kittosoft. Frankly, I am in a bind whether or not to remove the alarm. The reason I installed it was because my bike was vandalized. When my battery started giving me problems I stopped arming it and just cover my bike up every night and park it in a more visible spot.

So far this has been effective in preventing further damage.

But this has not prevented a cat from scent marking on my bike and cover. I washed the cover but after a couple of weeks the smell will return again.:(

I have ordered a fuse box. Once I have it installed, connecting and disconnecting the alarm will be a piece of cake. I can then connect only when I am in a 'high risk' area, for example, to prevent battery problems.

You can also get a battery charger if you can somehow find a socket to plug it to. This not only prevents battery drain, keeping your battery fully charged will prolong its life too!

Hi People,

I am thinking of ordering some parts from Motorworks after reading some good reviews about them here. I have not finalized what I want yet, but if anyone wish to 'tompang' (correct spelling?) please let me know. If your items are small, then you just need to pay for the parts.

But if they are heavy or bulky, then I may need you to share in the shipping cost. When the items arrive, we can then see how much space and weight each of items take up and split the cost from there. Since it may be difficult to be exact about each person's share, this offer is only open to those who don't mind a rough estimation.

My idea is to help those who may just wish to get some small items avoid paying the hefty shipping charge. No point paying $20-30 shipping for a 50 cents item.

Sure, just PM me the part number and price.

So PML sells the pins separately? And I just threw away 29 bucks? :(

Part number: 34-11-2-330-418. Pin and clip set. About $20-ish per set.

Cheers

Alamak, sorry mate.

Was really busy for the past 2 weeks. That was why I didn't go for the meetup. I was slogging in the office on Sunday.

I also didn't have time to think about the ordering, which was why I didn't contact you. My appologies.

Anyway, I hope to start this collective ordering thing so that we can all benefit. In future, I hope someone will let me 'tompang' as well.:p

BTW, do you have to pay for the VAT?

Thanks for the info, coolcat. $20-ish for a set of what is essentially paper clips sound excessive. Still must factor in time and labour. Will see how it goes. If the noise really starts getting unbearable then may have to part with the cash. Otherwise, changing to proper pads somewhere down the road may be a better choice.

Riders of older bikes (R1100 or older), care to share what pads you use?

Currypuff, you should not be paying VAT since the goods is sold to a buyer in a non-EU country. However, some evil force will levy GST if the declared value is more than $400; and that includes the freight value. :sian:

I used to get some squealing sounds on some pads; I did some research and there are schools of thought with the view that some anti-squeal grease at the back of the pads will solve the problem.

http://www.motorcycleparts-hornig.com/BMW-R-850-1100-1150-GS-and-Adventure/Spares/Anti-Squeal-Paste.html

Eh, however in my case I solved my problem when I upgraded the calipers from the stock ones, and changed the pads in the process.

Good luck.

Cheers
