Thanks for the info, f650gs. You are right, my calipers have no spring mechanism to push back the pads. What pads do you use? How do you know which are meant for the older models and which are for the newer ones?

As you can see from the link, the guy has to drill through the old pads to remove the anti-rattle clips. It's a hassle but much better than to have to bear with the irritating sound until the next change.

It makes me wonder how shops who profess to know about BMW bikes can overlook things like this. :(

I went back to them to complain about this but the mech just said, "It's OK one. Just wait for the pads to bed in and the noise will disappear."

Apparently, these people have never heard of the internet and chat pages where bikers do research and exchange info.

Try this kind of cheap tricks in Europe and Japan and I'm sure the shop will be gone in less than a year.

I'm not sure wat pad I use :p normal ones i guess. I went to m-technik to ask abt the rattling sound from the brakes ( I change the pad in another shop when i just took over the bike) they told me the difference between the older and new calipers and show me the correct pad which has a spring clip. Since my pad was new then, they advice me to change when worn no need to waste $$. Anyway it seems like the noise has gone away or I've gotten so use to it that I cant hear it... :p

Currypuff, you should not be paying VAT since the goods is sold to a buyer in a non-EU country. However, some evil force will levy GST if the declared value is more than $400; and that includes the freight value. :sian:

I used to get some squealing sounds on some pads; I did some research and there are schools of thought with the view that some anti-squeal grease at the back of the pads will solve the problem.

Eh, however in my case I solved my problem when I upgraded the calipers from the stock ones, and changed the pads in the process.

Good luck.

Hi, wat calipers you upgrade to? how much it cost? Thanks

Alamak, sorry mate.

Was really busy for the past 2 weeks. That was why I didn't go for the meetup. I was slogging in the office on Sunday.

I also didn't have time to think about the ordering, which was why I didn't contact you. My appologies.

Anyway, I hope to start this collective ordering thing so that we can all benefit. In future, I hope someone will let me 'tompang' as well.:p

BTW, do you have to pay for the VAT?

Thanks for the info, coolcat. $20-ish for a set of what is essentially paper clips sound excessive. Still must factor in time and labour. Will see how it goes. If the noise really starts getting unbearable then may have to part with the cash. Otherwise, changing to proper pads somewhere down the road may be a better choice.

Riders of older bikes (R1100 or older), care to share what pads you use?

:cheeky: just wanna make some noise as i am so free at home and nothing to do....

VAT will not be charged but remember to click 'are u vat registered= NO"

my package should be in this morning...

Hiya,

Transplanted R1100 series calipers to an old bike; turned out that the fitting was good, except that have to machine off some thickness from the mounting points to make it fit.

Cheers

Hey guys. I am thinking of a meetup this Sun 22 Nov about 3.00 pm.

Tentative location at Carl Junior Fastfood (former big splash East Park Way). Nice place to have coffee, enjoy sea view & oggle at our bikes. Free bike parking.

I believe some of you were there 2 weeks ago. If you are free, do drop by for a little chat.

Was looking through the parts in Motorworks website when it suddenly went... dead. Hmmm. Also sterling pounds are appreciating. A few weeks ago it was 1 GBP to S$2.29. Then 2.31, and now 2.33. :(

BTW, anyone here uses steel braided brake hoses for your bikes? Was looking at the Goodridge S/S hoses in Motorworks. Front and rear for 102.76 GBP (S$208.25). Seems reasonable. Anything to look out for?

Coolcat, which bike did you upgrade? the K (75?) or the Mystic? What was the original brakes (Brembo?) and how much is the improvement?

Hiya, Puff

I use braided lines for my bikes, including Goodridge; it's ... eh ... good. :p Alternatively Bikelab can build a set of lines for a bike if you leave it there a while.

The K75's stock Brembo front calipers were quite poor for stopping (plus the squealing that I had) and the pads were near impossible to find. I then decided to graft a set of 4-pot R11XX series calipers onto the bike since the distance between the mounting holes on the forks were identical. However, the mounting points on the calipers have to be narrrowed to fit onto the forks' mounting point.

Improvement in performance was good; bear in mind that there was about 10 years' difference between the two sets of calipers.

May not be able to make the meet up on Sunday, travelling and returning on Sunday itself.

Cheers

Another rider, Michael, will, tentatively, be joining us.

I will send my order out sometime next week. If you guys need anything, please let me know by then. Be advised that my order exceeds $400, so you may have to pay for GST if you tompang. Please wait for others to order if you don't wish to.

Thanks for the feedback, Blackie21 and coolcat. I will be ordering a set of Goodridge. Don't wish to tempt fate with a set of rubber hoses 10 years old.

Will also be ordering an ignition sensor (hall sensor) as 3 years and 30,000km have passed since it was repaired.

Plus a hugger to keep the rear clean in case I change the shocks in future.

Whew! Big items that burn an equally big hole in the wallet. :(

I thought all ABS are the same, but this article shows the difference in performance between different bikes. Even among BMW bikes, it seems different models use different technology.

Personally, I like this design. But at nearly 60,000 yen, or about S$900, my brain refuses to entertain my heart.:sian:

I had the maroon fairing from Doken Japan on my last R back in 98. Was so unique at that time that people kept staring :D

Hi Bikerblues,

This is how the Japs convert their R1100R into cafe racers.

Yeah...these are from Doken Japan. Damn ex to spend on my 9 yr old bike la..

Stick to my current Apek Cafe design la ..hehehe

Wow, bikerblues, you really know a thing or two about fairings, don't you?

Yeah, the first set of pics were taken from a doken uk website. I was attracted to the design and wish to get one. Until I check out the price...:faint:

I read that the screen of the initial models cover the whole front. But the heat from the headlight caused it to melt. So they just cut a hole! Ingenious. But they didn't cut the price!

So I presume whoever got the bike from you has this fairing? Assuming the bike is still around somewhere...

I happen to come across the second set of pics and didn't know what fairing those were. But you know, they have all kinds of crazy stuff in Japan. Anyway, hope to see you and your pals on Sunday, yah?

Has anybody install scottoiler on a f650 before. Is there any side effect from doing so? Do I need to drill hole on manifold or something like tat to tap power.

I am not the best person to answer this but when I was reading up on the reviews of alu boxes by different manufacturers, most overseas owners powder coat them to prevent said oxidation. In fact, when you order these boxes online, the sites will often ask whether you want to powder coat them black or silver (for a charge).

Someone else may be able to advise you where to get it done in Singapore. Or send to your favorite motorcycle shop if you don't mind the service charge.

************

My previous bike, a ZX-11, comes with a Scottoiler. To me, this is one of the best additions you can make to a chain driven bike.

Advantages

1) Extend chain life (I don't remember replacing in my 4 years of ownership. I had to replace the chain of my 400cc bike without a Scottoiler)

2) Don't have to keep tightening the chain, don't have to keep lubing the chain

3) The oil is much easier to wash off than grease

4) Your chain looks much cleaner

5) Cheap. I used 2T oil instead of OEM oil. Didn't feel any difference.

A thin tube is attached to the carburettor to draw a miniscule amount of air in order for the oil to drip down. I laughed when people keep asking whether the air taken from the carb will affect performance.

Imagine a tin of condensed milk. When you punch a small hole, the milk doesn't flow out. When you punched another hole, air goes in one hole and milk drips out of the other. Same principle. So how much air is needed to make the oil drip, say, one drip every 5 seconds? Negligible, compared to how much air the engine gulp. So unless your bike has only 1hp I believe it is a non-issue.

Hey Mr Puff :)

Yeah..I paid alot for that first doken fairing back then and I think that R (from back then) is still running around our island :)

The second set of pics (cafe fairing) is very nice but requires lots of modification on the handlebar etc..

Try to drop by this sun.. cheers

Al metal and primary alloys are fairly soft. You can polish this to your liking.

Two points to clarify. Yes there are chemical treatments to remove the oxide layer. Something like Hydroflouric Acid will probably work, but HF is pretty nasty and the 2nd point below is probably the more important thing.

Even if you could possibly remove the oxide layer, Aluminum has such a high affinity for oxygen that Al2O3 will reform in a normal STP environment, in less than 1 ten thousandth of a second. So, it won't really matter if you remove the oxide layer. The layers that form can be different thicknesses, but are on the order of 1x10^-10. Or a few atoms thick. Anodizing can increase this layer but again, even if the layer was removed... blink and its back again. You can practically rub junk into the surface to make it shiney though.

Google's my best friend... I tried adding a thin layer of oil on the box... Will let u know if it helps.
