Tks for the link. Will check it out when I get home (no flash on iPhone). A friend was able to charter a simple power boat from SAFYC last year. Was fun even though it was a small boat.

SAFYC has added a cabin cruiser for chartering.

For those who are interested in boating, I suggest you try sailing. It is cheaper to start as compared to powerboating, and you learn more seamanship.

Typically one would start off with a single-helm like a Byte or Laser, and once you have mastered the sailing basics, you can try faster hulls like Nacra or Hobie-cat, and eventually go into keel-boat sailing. Keelboat sailing will requires both sailing certifications and PPCDL.

To me, powerboating is only fun on a jet-ski but the fun will wear off soon as there isn't much you can do on a jet-ski as it has no range and space. Most of the powerboat owners are not really into powerboating but it is just a tool for their fishing.

Agree^^

DUring NS i was an SAFYC member, and their boat charters are really good price for their members.... But as said during NS days, where got money charter boat =S

Initially I also wanted learn sailing, but i wanted to learn those 8-men boat kind, and had to wait for class to full..... The single byte i was saw during my PPCDL training at Poly Marina (Beside RSYC) sent her 'captain' overboard with her mast? (Not sure is it called a mast, the beam that swings when wind change or what) when the boat changed direction, that kinda gave me a phobia =S

I love power boating though, especialyl when it rains and the seas turn choppy, ahhh then it turns fun/adventurous, but sg waters, 1 hour later peace again. =)

@Throttle: Get get!!! or want share? Actually i thinking of buying a boat for pleasure next time, but if 1 person buy doens't seem a good buy, would be ideal if shared though....

You gentleman might wanna check out this link too http://www.sgboating.com/usedboats.html the chaparrel looks nice...

Since its going to be sittnig there most days and I would use if for at most 2-3 days / month...

You should start off learning the points of sailing on a dingy instead of going straight to a keelboat.

Those are keelboats where you typically need a few crew to run it. Most would start off with a J24 which is very popular locally.

That part is known as the boom. On a single helm boat, if you get hit by a boom, it's entirely your own fault. If you are properly trained, that should not happened.

I love power boating though, especialyl when it rains and the seas turn choppy, ahhh then it turns fun/adventurous, but sg waters, 1 hour later peace again. =)

There are many PPDCL holders who are too afraid to handle a boat on their own because they lack confidence as they have no practice after passing their test.

The only way to improve your boat handling skill is to practice. One great way is to volunteer your service as a rescue boatman at any of the PA Sea Sports Centre during weekends, and they will also pay you a honorarium.

Ah , thank you very much for that resource, I will call them up next Monday, always wanted to get experience as a rescue boatman.

Maybe we should all invest money in a boat and christian it SBF huh? =)

haven't you heard of this saying "there are only two happy occasions for boat owners, the day you buy it and the day you sell it"

I have seen too many times, good friends share to my a boat and ended up not even on talking term.

Oh is it? Guess I'm over optimistic... But again, thanks for sharing your experience, appreciate it.

I think this is among the lowest charter rate in SG. The boat you are referring to must be the dynaglass 20-footer right?

I would say powerboating in SG is among the more costly hobbies. Rental is not cheap and fuel isnt either. And boats guzzle a lot of fuel!

THough I have had my PPCDL for 5 years, I have not rented a powerboat even once. I considered buying a second-hand boat, but decided against it. SGboating used to have decent-priced second-hand boats. I went to Raffles Marina (thier location) early this year with a friend. They had a 10 year old Maxum 25-footer cabin cruiser selling for around 30k iirc. Think its gone by now. The other boats available are the Chapparals, etc which are not cheap unless you have a fat bank account.

That's why I took up sailing recently. I have a Level 1 sailing proficeincy cert which allows me to rent dinghys. PA Water venture offers the best rentals, at $25 for whole-day usage of its Laser Picos.

Is sailing hard to pick up? I mean i'm 1.85m and 88kg, would it be a problem? cause like i mentioned in the earlier posts, seeing someone get caught by a boom wasn't a pretty sight, and the 1 seater sail boat was rather small?

@Icomeforyou

With some training and practice, most people would be able to sail a boat quite easily. Of course racing is another subject and probably requires some fine skills, but Im not into that. I think its more enjoyable to spend a day on water, enjoy the breeze and waves on my own time and destination in mind.

Your height may cause a bit of discomfort as you will need to move from one side of the boat to another quite frequently while sailing. The boom can give a decent smack on the head if the winds are strong. And in a dinghy, some tall sailors tend to have chaffed knees at the end of the day (unless you wear knee guards perhaps?).

Ah, thank you for your insight. True, I never did get the idea of racing though.

Sailing does seem like a pretty fun brother to just power boating, but I digress here. =)

Was on another forum the other day, and saw that in the U.S, someone was just giving a boat away on the internet... Sheesh....
