Hi everyone,

I am looking to increase the brightness of my head lights for safety and visibility purposes. I need some advice as to the appropriate way to go about doing this. Where can one purchase the parts and have them installed?

Thanks!

I believe HID modification is not road legal in Singapore, unless it comes with your vehicle as standard.

My buddy showed me his HIR headlights, and they seem to be incredibly bright - you can read up more here if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlamp

Halogen infrared reflective light sources (HIR)

A further development of the tungsten-halogen bulb has a dichroic coating that passes visible light and reflects infrared radiation. The glass in such a bulb is spherical, rather than tubular. The reflected infrared radiation strikes the filament located at the centre of the sphere, heating the filament to a degree greater than occurs by passing an electric current through the filament. The filament thus superheated emits more light, without an increase in power consumption or a decrease in lifespan

I believe Lim Batt stocks HIR bulbs, but I believe the brand itself is a relatively unknown Korean one. You can get their contact from the Advertisers' Board.

I've also head good things about Osram Night Breaker bulb, though I'm not sure who might stock this one.

Hope this helps.

hey crankcase, thanks for your reply. I am concerned about the wattage and heat generation of the aftermarket bulbs, i don't to melt my housing or short circuit the electrical systems

would help if you mention what bike you are riding and what's the recommended bulb and watt for your bike.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

HID wont melt your OEM headlamp.it wont short circuit anything unless u connect it wrongly.if u wan super bright i suggest u get the 6000K type.which is almost close to pure white light.

Hi,

If you plan to upgrade to HID you have to change the headlamp to projector type lens as well, if you do not, your headlamp may blind oncoming traffic & you may get a few honks as well. The lens will help intensify the light to almost spot type of illumination .

I used to drive a Toyota Wish (ori projector lamps but H11 type unlike their higher spec ones which uses D2R HIDs ) & installed an after market HID (4300k-almost ori light looking ) but it illuminates better esp near the sides. After that I dismantled it to pass my 1st LTA inspection-therefore it is not legal to install/upgrade.I had sold my car since & now back to 2 wheel riding

Cheers

Just to add I dun like white light......can't see clearly in the rain not even 10 meters in front. There is a reason why engineers uses yellow lights.

I'm currently using Philips EcoVision H4....Seems to be alright.

Anyway if you want visibility. Maybe can consider those like 'strobing' LEDs. Got one people Mass Order http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php/304674-lt-CMO-gt-High-visibility-LED-Bullet-and-Cree-Lights

Do take note if installing HID

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlamp#Use_in_daytime

"Scientific study of headlamp glare has shown that for any given intensity level, the light from HID headlamps is 40% more glaring than the light from tungsten-halogen headlamps."

"The arc light source in an HID headlamp is fundamentally different in size, shape, orientation, and luminosity distribution compared to the filament light source used in tungsten-halogen headlamps. For that reason, HID-specific optics are used to collect and distribute the light. HID burners cannot effectively or safely be installed in optics designed to take filament bulbs; doing so results in improperly-focused beam patterns and excessive glare, and is therefore illegal in almost all countries"

Found this http://www.brandsport.com/bulcomchar.html

" A stock halogen bulb has a color temperature of about 3200 Kelvin"

From the graph matrix 3.8k is already consider almost white.

For those who desire for brighter headlight or whiter headlight, here is my advice. I'll explain it in layman terms, and avoid any technical terminologies as much as possible.

When buying a halogen bulb for your headlight, first thing you should be aware of is the color of the bulb, if it is blue. you have to be really suspicious. Immediately, read the packaging and look for the bulb's wattage ratings. Usually, these blue colored bulbs are running at above 100w but most bikes' headlight are designed for 55w, some smaller bikes are running at 35w.

Halogen bulbs are inherently yellowish, that physics. In order to achieve a white light, the bulb lens is tinted blue which act as a filter to remove certain color spectrum of the yellow light, resulting in a white light output. If the bulb rating is at 55w, the blue filter will have a significant impact on the brightness so the only way to maintain the original brightness is cranked up the wattage to 100w, some even to 130w.

So what's the big deal if my bike is using 100w bulb ? It's a big deal because :

- you have upset the electrical load on your bike because a 100w bulb will draw twice as much load on your battery, and if the alternator is unable to charge the battery sufficiently, you may find the battery too weak to crank the starter if it is an electric start bike,

- the headlight wiring will run hotter and over time, it will be hardened. One fine day, it will be so brittle when wiring is bend, it will disintegrate.

- Halogen bulbs emit alot of heat, from a 55w to a 100w bulb, effective, the heat will be double, and it will melt your headlamp, and bulb connector.

So what's the suggestion ?

When buying bulb, always go for big brands although at a higher price. Halogen bulbs are not very high tech stuff but a a good brand would have spent money on R&D to ensure their products meet international road safety standard, and consistent in quality. They will substantiate their claims, and do not exaggerate.

Personally I believe in Philips because for the quality, they are not overpriced like PIAA thus Philips bulbs are very popular, and readily available. There a few overseas vendors that sell Philips bulbs at a good price, and with free delivery to anywhere on this planet. This is one I used recently http://www.carbulbsdirect.com/.

Go to Autobacs, and you can test a good range of the Philips bulbs, and decide which model you like, do a price comparison at the same time. If you are in a hurry, just buy from Autobac, if you are not, order from overseas, delivery is about 5 working days.
