Lots of shops there. Shop around a bit and compare prices and the bikes they're offering. Make sure they don't give you the old lousy models. And prepare to have your license ready, the police there love to stop and fine tourists!

Ya bali is the beautiful place to visit and riding trough car and bike. Please keep in mind some points when rent a bike or car.First, "Check the bike thoroughly, make sure there is sufficient tread on the tires, that both the front and back brakes work and most importantly that the horn works".Theseare the basic things to remember.

Lately, there have been a lot of bike rental scams.

They rent you a bike cheap then upon returning, claim these parts damaged etc.

So get reliable referrals or rent car from hotels

yup did it many times since 1999, once from bandung n overland java to bali.

Bali I covered from south central all the way to lovina, melaya, negara, karangasem, kintamani areas, tanah lot, sanur, gianyar ubud areas etc too many to say lah.

Went the whole island on a bike n i sometimes carry my surfboard on a makeshift surfboard holder if go surfing at remote spots its easy. Riding bikes is damn convenient cos traffic jams especially around kuta n denpasar areas is becoming like central bangkok. Ever contemplated to drive but i think getting stuck in traffic just to get out of Kuta will already take u 1hr so might as well ride.

Nowadays easy just use phone gps can get to find places.

If police stop me i never stop, just wave hand n say "Slamat Pagi Pak!" n i pretend didn't know what happen n just go. I know if get stopped, surely ends up in kopi money or saman. Most blur angmos stop n get fined.

Rentals dun waste time renting online, just go there n then find rentals around your hotel areas.

Advice, best u bring your own helmets cos their helmets either dirty n smelly or looks like going to break with one fall.

Ride safe n conservative cos u dun wanna get into traffic accidents there, could be messy. So far i've not gotten into any just minor misses or slow falls. If bike parts broke, go find the bike shop area around kuta n get it fixed youself, before returning it to the rental shop if not the fella going to ask u more uneeded money.

A lot of suspected thefts by the rental company also. They steal their own bike from your listed address then you have to pay. Beware because most rental places in SEA have no theft insurance.

this. although everyone likes the thrill of riding overseas (e.g. Vietnam), I think we all prefer to have a peaceful trip.. I wanted to rent but decided not to risk being a victim of bike theft by the renter coy.

no smoke without fire.. hear too many incidents.

I've rented bikes (kupkias or scooters) for self-ride in many places before: Bali, Penang, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Kenting, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nong Khai, Vieng Vang, Sri Lanka (actually a tuk tuk), and always had a good time. Bikes are far better options than cars in these places because you can beat the traffic jams and park anywhere you please. If you have a licence, you should totally go for it. Don't ride illegally without licence.

Never had a bike stolen. Just use your common sense and park in brightly lit areas or lively places. At night, park in the hotel or just outside the hotel door. If kiasu, bring a bike lock, although I never had to do that either.

Rental is really cheap, usually from S$8-15 per day depending on place (Taiwan is most expensive at S$15). Gas is also very cheap, and a full tank is 4L ($3-5) goes a very long way. Scooters and kupkias get 30-40km per liter, so a full tank easily lasts 2-4 days.

Now I have my own bike and I ride to Malaysia, but when going other countries, I still rent a bike and vroom vroom my way around. The freedom it gives you is amazing. Even more than a car. There are small roads that you can explore on a bike that a car just cannot enter because the roads are too narrow. Super awesome.

Let me just give you a piece of advice, if you are planning riding a bike on the Southern Bali road you really need to think twice because it is not advisable and very dangerous. If you will rent a bike in Ubud it's recommended to head back to Ubud from Amed but you have to take the se route to Kusamba or Lebih and from there go to west. After that make sure to get a taxi going to Kuta.
