Be careful with screws/bolts that need to bear structural load, and those that go into the engine though. Because of the high chromium content, SS tends to be more brittle and will break more easily. So make sure you get a rating that is equal to or better than the one being replaced if the screw bears structural load.

SS is also unsuitable for parts that undergo constant heat-cool cycles because of the tendency to weld itself to the aluminum part. E.g. cylinder head bolts, etc.

Well, the first screw i will replace would be the plastic windshield screws. Alluminium should be enough.

The other worry is the sheared off bolt on my rhs engine cover. Anyone knows a good motortiam to fix southern motor's screw up? The bolt looks small, i dont know if i can bring myself to drilling the pilot hole to insert the screw removal tool.

I have drill guides, the smallest I have is #40, if you need a hand I can help. Are you able to remove one of the other screws and measure the length and width of the threaded part?

Also, do you have a drill and good quality extractors?

Looked at guides on screw removal, and i didnt feel confidant enough to buy the stuff needed. i have an impact drill, rated at 240 watts, if i recall. Dont feel very confident using it to drill a starter hole.

The screw probably got sheared when the smart alecks at southern sprayed the engine with black aerosol paint, glueing the screw in, and sealing the screw.

Ok, let me know what you want.

Any professionals can guarantee a safe removal of the screw? I lack the confidence in doing this myself, and would rather have someone else take care of this for me.

I was looking at your broken off screw again, it doesn't seem to be broken off too far down the surface. Have you tried removing the entire cover and see if any part of it is sticking out? If there is you could just use a pair of vice grips to screw it out.

I dont dare to. The other screws may well shear off as well. That, and the oil in the engine has another thousand miles to go before changing. Chex9000 is doing quite well for a cheap fully synthetic oil.

I will slowly scrape off some paint to allow wd40 to seep into the other screws for a week before trying.

I will head to hl to purchase one screw for reference before getting started. Who knows, maybe pm has experience with sheared off screws. For one, i am not going back to sm.

If wd40 won't remove it, give contact cleaner a try.

You can get commercial aerosol brake cleaners. But not many shops sell them. You can also use acetone from commercial suppliers. If you can't get acetone paint thinner will also work, but be careful not to get it on rubber hoses.

Should be ok if you don't soak them too long, just dip a cloth in acetone and clean it off. My calipers are painted black, and it was ok. You might want to try cleaning a part that cannot be seen first, and see if any paint comes off onto the cloth.

Typically once the paint has set, it won't come off.
