There is a bike shop locate just after asphoon serangoon. located on the right side of shophouses. cant recall the shop name at this moment. they do refurbishin for rear shocks. maybe if u free check on other threads for details; esp s4 ones.

 

but this solution is only remporary. it might last 6 months or 2 years max. then back to square one. best bet is to get an aftermarket one for better ride.

 

got a few brands can consider; wunderlich, technoflex, hyperpro(spring only), ohlins etc. M-teknik located at Ubi is a good place to source one.

Hi to all the experienced bros out there, have a question regarding the handling of the Vara 1k for a shorter rider

 

I'm 169cm with a 29" inseam. The tallest bike I've ridden is a DT200r (for like half a year as a daily rider), which is the older version of the wr2. It's a 2-stroke, with a 895mm seat height. Both my feet can't touch the floor at all (even if i extend fully, not even the tips of my toes touch the floor!) on this. When I stop, I'll shift my weight to the left and put only my left foot down and balance using just the tip of my foot. I'm pretty comfortable riding it this way, since when moving it doesnt matter whether your feet can touch the floor. I can ride confidently and i LOVE the height of a scrambler cuz it allows you to see over traffic =D compared to my zxr4 which had pretty poor visibility imo.

 

So my dream is to ride a big ADV bike, with my eye on a used vara 1k. It's seat height is listed as 838mm, which is lower than the DT200r, but the DT200r has a skinny seat width-wise which makes a big difference. The vara seat looks pretty fat haha. Also, the DT200r is a super-lightweight bike (120kg?) versus the behemoth that is the vara at 270kg wet. And I've also read forums that say it's top-heavy compared to the lighter v-strom (240kg) which supposedly has a lower and more manageable CG, which will prob make a difference for a shorter rider.

 

So my question is this - would it be a bad idea to go touring up north on a vara for a rider like me? We're assuming I have some skillz in handling a bike... but we all know sometimes sh*t happens and in those instances a smaller, lighter bike would probably be better. If that's so, I guess I'll just have to look at other options like maybe the versys 650 or f650gs (the single). But they are kinda underpowered imo (yes, I know there's that guy who rode his ksr110, and i know there are people who tour on vespas/waves etc, but let's just say my preference is for more power, is that okay?) Not really considering lowering options cause i feel like that's just messing with the intended bike geometry, but I'm okay with cutting seat though.

 

I haven't gone 'viewing' and sitting on other people's bikes to 'test' it, because I feel like I should do my homework online first before wasting people's precious time. I'd be pretty miffed if a short guy came to sit on my bike and left immediately saying he couldn't handle it. Like, no respect yo. Lol. Time is precious!

 

So...TL;DR, Any short riders fitting my height profile out there who have handled this beast up north to somewhere like chiangmai and lived to tell the tale? Also, it seems like when crossing mekong you need to get the bike on a boat, how's that even possible with such a phat bike? Does that mean only light-weight bikes will be able to do that?

I've ridden a vara 1k before way back arnd '04. I'm 1.67m and weighs abt 100kg.

 

Before doin up the bike it was on ori shocks for front n rear. I had a hepco alu panniers. Wen I sat down it sagged and I had no prob putting both my legs down. But I didnt like it cos wen diving into a corner it will bounce. So I upgraded it with the Wilbers shocks rear and Ohlins front springs. It lifted up the bike. It had good rebound and damping! Diving into corners were great! U shud try riding thru Gerik Highway and u will know wat I mean.

 

But there is another side to it, I got to tiptoe now on jus one leg cos the bike's suspension is lifted. But I liked it! I liked the way tat I can't rch my toes to the ground. Gave a sense of thrill to balance the bike!

 

U shud give a try on stock suspension settings and also the upgraded ones. Den u will know wat I mean. I've ridden up to Patong Beach and rode thru Semenanjung Malaysia. The ride was great!

 

Now I feel like getting 1 again! Hahahha

you have made a right choice in getting a XL 1000. This versatile Beast is almost Bulletproof in diff terrain when you ride it! why I say so:

 

1: I like it high mount under tray exhaust because should One encounter any Heavy Flood to Knee lvl this bike will keep on smilling and move on. ( Personally encountered twice when riding into my in Laws place in ( Ayer Hitam )

 

2: The Tank OMG!! 25tankish and it upright rider position Provided a aftermarket Handlebar installed is very comfortable. , it effortlessly just make you wanna ride it more and more each time.

 

3: Fuel consumption for me is somewhere 17km/L kind of OK for me.

 

4: Maintenance SOP. Honda it says.......

 

5: Buy One and ride it Fast bro.
